四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、The message was short. I read it three times: “Hey, Mom, can I come to see you?” I wrote back: “Yes!” He said he hoped to make it in time for dinner.

I made a quick run to the market, put sheets on the guest bed and set the TV to record the Warriors’ game, so if traffic was awful, he wouldn’t have to miss the first half. Then I began cooking, cleaning, watching the clock and listening for his footsteps coming up the walk.

It’s called waiting. I’m good at it. When he was a newborn, I’d wait for him to go to sleep. Soon then I’d stand by his bed waiting for him to wake up. I waited, as he learned to do things like walking, talking and feeding himself; throwing a ball, riding a bike and reading a book.

I waited for him to start preschool, primary school, middle school and college.

I waited with dread for him to start driving. And I waited up every time he came home late.

I wait for my son to grow up, but that doesn’t mean the waiting game is over. It never really ends.

Mothers wait for all kinds of reasons—good news or bad, happiness or heartache. But the waiting is soon forgotten, usually, the minute a long awaited child walks through the door.

My boy will be here soon. But if he’s late, I can wait. I’m good at it. And he’s worth(值得) it. I will always leave a light on for him.

【1】After knowing her son would come home, which of the following activities did she do?

    a. Shopping. b. Cooking.

    c. Cleaning.  d. Watching the Warriors’ game.

    A. bc   B. ad C. abc   D. bcd

【2】What does the underlined word “dread” mean?

    A. 激动   B. 骄傲 C.  厌恶 D. 害怕

【3】Which of the following about the writer is TRUE according to the article?

    A. Luckily, her son never makes her wait long.

    B. She has experienced all kinds of feelings while waiting for her son to do things.

    C. When her son went to college, her waiting ended.

    D. Waiting for her son is often boring, but once her son arrives she forgets about it.

【4】Which do you think would be the best title for the reading?

    A. Worth waiting for

    B. Being patient is difficult

    C. Learn to be a mother

    D. Visit your mother often

  • 25、   Jane has been living in China for more than two years and she has come to know some of the differences between Western and Chinese culture. Here is what she has to say about this.

“In China people often try to avoid conflicts. If somebody does something you don’t like, you may be upset (不开心), but you should hide it, keep it inside, and act like nothing is wrong. If you must do something about it, you should not talk to the person directly, but rather talk to someone else who will then talk with them. However, in the western countries, things are different. If someone does something I don’t like, I will tell them so. I may say it nicely or I may get very angry, but at least I will do something. Also, I won’t talk to other persons about it and instead I will talk to the person directly. In fact, in the western countries, if you say something bad about someone to someone else, it is thought that you have a bad character .

“A very good example of this comes from my first year of teaching in China. I knew I did not have a lot of experience in teaching and that I probably made many mistakes, so I asked them if I was doing wrong, what I should do better and so on. However, every time I asked, they said, ‘Oh, you are doing a wonderful job.’ I really expected someone to tell me something to help me to improve, but after that, people started telling me that the leader was not satisfied with my work. A few months later, I got a letter saying that my teaching was not good enough and that I would no longer be able to teach at the school. I was so surprised that I didn’t know how to handle it.”

She also told me another thing, “Every time I go out, people ask,‘Where are you going?’ I am really tired of these.” It’s time for us to pay more attention to the culture difference.

1The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refers to ________.

    A.Jane’s teaching experience in China

B.in China people often try to avoid conflicts

C.the differences between Western and Chinese culture

2What is the meaning of “avoid conflicts” in Paragraph 2?

    A.避免冲突 B.胆小怕事 C.背后议论 D.大声喧哗

A.a friendly greeting in China may be something impolite to foreigners

B.foreigners want to know about Chinese culture

C.Chinese people should not greet foreigners

D.Westerners should not talk to people directly

A.talk about it with other people

B.hide it inside and won’t talk about it

C.talk about it directly with the people

D.get very angry but do nothing

When I left Wilson Creek, there was a small lake in the south-east of the town. They have filled in the lake and built a large shopping mall and a swimming pool there. They have also built a new post office just across from my old school.

The library now has a large green area in front of it but it's not the same as when the park was there.
