The story took place in a small town in winter. One day a man named Bryan Anderson met an old lady standing by an expensive car.1.很明显,她的车坏掉了。So he stopped his old truck and got out.
It took Bryan about fifty minutes to fix the car. The lady felt quite thankful and she asked how much she should pay him. But Bryan wanted no money.2.对他来说,帮助别人很正常。He said, “If you want to repay me, next time you see someone in need, just give out your friendly hand.”
After saying goodbye, the lady continued down the road till she reached a small cafe. She stopped for something to eat. As the pretty waitress stood next to her, the lady noticed she was nearly eight months pregnant(怀孕的).3. Although she looked tired, she still served the customers with a smile on her face. As the old lady was going to pay the $10 bill, she remembered Bryans words. The old lady paid one hundred-dollar bill. But when the waitress returned with the change, the lady had gone. On the table she saw a small note. Her eyes were filled with tears when she read it,4. Somebody once helped me when I was in need. I'm helping you. If you want to pay me back, continue being kind to others.”
Was the old lady an angel?5. The waitress was so excited that she called her husband to tell the story. “Bryan. Bryan Anderson my dear. you're not going to believe what has happened...”
Love needs to be passed on. Everyone can be an angel.

22、Bollywood: the Hollywood of India
You might be surprised to learn that India produces about 800 movies a year, and that number continues to grow. Just as the movie Capital of the United States is Hollywood, the movie capital of India is Bombay (孟买), but it is usually called "Bollywood", a combination(结合) of the words Bombay and Hollywood.
No Bollywood movie is thought complete without a few songs and dances. In fact, music is an important part of Bollywood movies. Even a bad movie can still do well if the music is good. Music directors are sometimes more popular than the film stars. A Bollywood movie has five to six songs with at least three songs to show what the dances mean.
Bollywood may be different from Hollywood in music, but it is very like Hollywood in several ways. If Tom Cruise can hold a gun, so can the Bollywood hero Sharukh Khan. Hollywood stars are followed by news reporters just as often as Hollywood stars. The persona! lives of actors and actresses catch the headlines(头版头条), just as they do in the United States.

25、Born into a farmer’s family, life was not easy when I was a kid. We were so poor that we often did not know where our next meal was coming from. I had to sell cabbages at the marketplace to support my family.
A storyteller once came to the marketplace, and I went to listen to him. My mother was unhappy with me for forgetting my job. But that night, while she was making clothes for us under the weak light of an oil lamp, I couldn't help retelling stories I'd heard that day. She listened impatiently at first, since in her eyes professional (职业的) storytellers were smooth-talking men—nothing good ever came out of their mouths. But slowly she was attracted by my retold stories, and from that day on, she never gave me any task on market days, unspoken agreement to enjoy new stories. As a repayment(回报)for Mother's kindness and a way to show off my memory, I'd retell the stories for her in lively detail. Soon, she wasn't the only member of my audience, which later included my elder sisters, my aunts, even my stubborn grandmother.
I knew she was worried about me. Talkative kids are not well thought of in our village, for they can bring trouble to themselves and to their families when they talk too much. Mother often reminded me not to talk so much, wanting me to be a silent and modest teenager. However, my natural desire(渴望)to talk never went away, and that is what makes my name – Mo Yan, which means ‘no speaking’. This strong wish to talk also improved my ability to express myself, which is important for writers who are also considered as storytellers.
【1】Mo Yan lived a/an ________ life when he was young.
A. difficult B. colourful C. easy D. rich
【2】From the second paragraph, we can learn that ________.
A. little Mo Yan was interested in selling vegetables
B. his mother was attracted by the retold story at first
C. his mother didn’t let him listen to the new stories again
D. little Mo Yan had quite a good memory
【3】Why did his mother dislike the professional storytellers?
A. Because she thought they never said anything good.
B. Because she thought they couldn’t make much money.
C. Because she thought they would affect Mo Yan’s schoolwork.
D. Because she thought most people didn’t like listening to stories.
【4】In Mo Yan’s opinion, a writer should be a ________ child when they were young.
A. silent B. modest
C. talkative D. trouble-making
【5】Which is the best title(标题)of the passage?
A. My Unlucky Childhood
B. A Storyteller’s Childhood
C. My Kind Grandmother
D. More talking leads to success
26、“Don’t tell anyone!” is likely a phrase you have heard before or after someone tells you a secret. But why is it so hard not to spill the beans? One Baylor College of Medicine expert explains why this is a challenge.
“A secret often includes something that someone does not take pride in. They’ve chosen someone to tell the secret, but don’t want other people to know about it because they feel like if it gets out, it could damage (破坏) their fame,” said Dr Asim Shah, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Bavlor. “However, it can be hard for the person to keep that to themselves because it may become a burden (负担).”
As soon as you tell somebody not to repeat your secret, people want to share it with somebody else. In addition most people have a confidant (知己) so when you share information with yours, keep in mind that they likely will share it with their own confidants.
With secrets so often getting out, why do people share them in the first place? “One reason is that people often feel like it will help them keep close friendship with others,” Shah said. However, connecting telling someone your secrets with how close you are to them is not always advisable. It is important for people to understand that they can have close relationships without sharing their secrets necessarily.
“Another reason why people often tell a secret is that they feel guilty about keeping it,” said Shah. “For example, if your friend tells you a secret but you do not share it with your close friends, you may feel guilty about not telling them. If you do not share certain things with your close family members, a sense of distrust can develop. Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone.”
He added that people who are more talkative may by accident let a secret out but that does not necessarily mean it is a good idea to share secrets with someone who is quieter. If somebody is quiet and keeps everything in, it may cause them to have more stress, and finally they will talk to somebody else.
If you do not want to be responsible ( 负责的) for keeping someone’s secret, it is best to be honest and tell the person you do not want to know his or her secret.
“If you end up accidentally sharing a secret with somebody else, it is best to be honest and let the person know that you shared his or her secret,” Shah said.
【1】What does the underlined phrase “spill the beans” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Tell the secret.
B.Face the challenge.
C.Keep the secret.
D.Avoid the challenge.
【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.It is unnecessary to keep secrets.
B.Close friends should share secrets with each other.
C.Sharing secrets will help you get the trust of someone.
D.Real friendship shouldn’t be based on whether or not secrets are shared.
【3】In Shah’s opinion, if we by accident share our friends’ secrets with others, we should ________.
A.hide the truth
B.tell them the truth
C.break up with them
D.share a secret with them

The boat arrived at a small town, and Legree and his slaves(奴隶) got off. Tom and the other men walked all the way to the plantation.
They stopped in front of a house. It was large, but it looked empty and uncomfortable, the glass of some windows were broken and there were bits of wood and boxes on the ground. Two slaves, Sambo and Quimbo, were Legree’s two main helpers on the plantation, and they arrived with dogs.
“Don’t try to ran away,”said Legree to Tom and the others, “or the dogs will follow you.”
“Sambo,” said Legree, “take these new slaves down to the cabins.”
The slaves followed Sambo to the cabins. They were near the plantation and far from the house. Tom’s heart sank when he saw them. Each one had only one room, without any furniture.
“Go into this one,”said Sambo. “They will all be crowded later.”
Later in the evening the other slaves came back from the plantation, tired, hungry and dirty. They didn’t even look at the new ones. They had to wait in line for their turn to cook a very poor meal. Then they all went to sleep on the floor in the cabins.
Every day, from early in the morning until late in the evening, under the hot sun, the slaves picked cotton. When they finished, Legree weighed it, and there was whipping(鞭打)for the slaves who didn’t pick enough cotton. Tom learnt to pick cotton quickly.
