24、“I sometimes get up at three or four in the morning to surf the Internet.”
“ I checked my e-mail almost forty times a day.”
“I seldom spend less than three hours each time on the net.”
“I spend more time in chat rooms than with my ‘real-life’ friends.”
Do you know any people like these? They are part of a new addiction* called Internet addiction. According to experts, Internet addicts* spend at least thirty hours online every week. They lose control of the time they spend on the Internet.
For example, one college student was missing for several days. His friends were worried and looked for him everywhere but couldn’t find him. They called the police. The police found the student in the computer lab: he was surfing the Internet---for seven days straight.
A study shows that about seven to ten percent of Internet users become addicted. The teenagers spend more time on the Internet than with friends and family. That’s why some experts worry most about young people.
Is “surfing the Internet” a hobby or an addiction for you? You may have a problem if you have one of the following symptoms*.
★ You go out with your friends less and less.
★ You’ve decided to spend a short time online, but then you spend several hours.
★ You do not go to important family events or you do not do school projects because you like to spend hours on the Internet.
What is the situation? Some experts suggest that people set strict limits on their time for internet use. You have to learn to control it, or the Internet would control you.

In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution. They join “environment clubs”. In an environment club, people work together to make our environment clean.
Here are some things students often do. No-rubbish lunches. How much do you throw away after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in boxes that can be used again. Every week they will choose the classes that make the least rubbish and report them to the whole school! No-car day. On a no-car day, nobody comes to school in a car, not the students and not the teachers! Cars give pollution to our air, so remember: Walk, jump, bike or run. Use your legs! It’s lots of fun!
Turn off the water! Do you know that some toilets can waste twenty to forty million tons of water a half hour? In a year, that will fill a small river! In environment clubs, students mend those broken toilets.

26、Nowadays, more and more people pay attention to their physical health.
There are all kinds of articles and medicine about how to take care of their bodies. Most of them tell people to keep healthy by taking something into their bodies.
However, a recent study in the U.S. examined the influences of having a “higher purpose” on health. 136,265 people took part in 10 different studies, mostly in the United States and Japan.
An important relationship was examined between having a higher purpose in life and reducing the risk of death from all causes, especially from cardiovascular disease (心血管疾病). The people who were observed were around 65 years old at the beginning of the studies, and they had been followed for seven years. During that time, more than 14,500 of them died and more than 4,000 suffered cardiovascular events such as strokes(中风)or heart attacks.
The study showed that a higher sense of purpose has something to do with the reduction of about 20 percent of death from all causes as well as a lower risk of cardiovascular problems. This is a meaningful finding, and the knowledge should encourage us to help people find their purpose. It’s not just nice to have one—it can actually save lives.
“Giving life a higher purpose has long been an important way of life. Now the findings further prove that they may help people to look after their health and bring them a sense of well-being.” said Dr. Alan Rozanski, one of the authors of the study and members of the research team. So keep looking for your purpose!
