24、 Dragons are not real animals, but look like a combination(结合体)of many animals such as snakes, fish and deer. They have two horns(角)and a long moustache(胡子). With fantastic powers, they fly in the sky or swim in the sea. They can make rain, too. The Chinese dragon is a symbol of strength and good luck. The emperors of ancient China loved dragons. Their clothes were covered with pictures of dragons.
We are proud to call ourselves the "descendants(传人)of the dragon". In Chinese, "excellent" people are often called "dragons". A number of Chinese sayings and idioms talk about dragons, for example, "Hoping one's child will become a dragon," which means hoping he or she will be successful.
It is said that people born in the Year of the Dragon have certain characteristics. They are creative, confident, brave and quick-tempered. There are some famous "dragons" who have done excellent things, for example, the great man Deng Xiaoping, the famous businessman Li Jiacheng and the movie star Zhao Wei. They are all very successful.
There are also some traditional festivals about dragons in China, such as the Dragon Head-Raising Day and the Dragon Boat Festival. We have different kinds of activities to celebrate them. These two festivals come every year, but the Year of the Dragon comes every twelve years. 2012 is the Year of the Dragon.

25、A hunter (猎人) once lost his way deep inside the forest. As hard as he tried, he could not find a way out of the forest, nor could he find any food to eat. He started feeling so hungry that he could eat an elephant in one go. Disappointed, he lost all hope. And that was exactly when an apple tree caught his sight. He collected some apples to feed him for the rest of his search.
As he ate the first apple, he felt thankful for finding the tree. He thanked the forest. He could not believe his luck when he ate the first apple, but he was less thankful while eating the second apple and even less thankful after eating the fifth apple. Somehow, with each passing apple, his hunger refused to go away and he became unhappier. He couldn’t enjoy his tenth apple at all.
Why? He had already taken for granted (恩赐的) the gift of having found an apple tree in the middle of a forest. When he took the tenth apple in his hand, he was still very hungry, but he just did not feel like eating any more. Economics (经济学) calls this diminishing marginal utility (边际效用递减), like to call it diminishing gratitude (感恩), or in simpler words, taking things for granted. Or let’s just call it the tenth apple effect.
The tenth apple did not lack (缺少) flavor (味道), nor was it unable to end the man’s hunger. The only thing lacking was his gratitude for finding food in the middle of the forest.
【1】What happened to the hunter in the forest?
A.An apple tree stopped him.
B.He tried to eat an elephant.
C.He lost his way in the forest.
D.He was upset to find apples.

D.The man lacked gratitude for it.
【5】What may the writer wish readers to do in the daily life?

26、Socrates(苏格拉底) is a famous ancient Greek thinker, philosopher(哲学家) and educator. On the first day of school, Socrates told his students, “Today, we’ll only learn one thing, that is, to stretch(前伸) for your arms, and then try to swing them back.” He showed them and as a result, all the students laughed. “Sir, is it also learned?” one of the students laughed.
“Of course! You think this is an easy thing, but in fact, it is very difficult,” Socrates answered seriously.
Hearing this, all the students laughed even harder.
Without being a little angry, Socrates said, “In this class I’ll teach you how to learn this action well. After that, start today, and you will do it 100 times a day.”10 days later, Socrates asked, “Who still insists(坚持) on swinging his arms?” About 80% of the students raised their hands. 20 days later, Socrates asked again, “Who still insists on swinging his arms?” About 50% of them raised their hands. 3 months later, Socrates asked again, “Who still insists on the simplest action of swinging?” This time only one student raised his hand. He was Plato.
From this example, we can see that perseverance is the easiest but the most difficult thing in the world, because everyone can do it, but not everyone will do it. Only the one who can insist on an easy thing may make it!
