  • 25、The clothes you wear. The food you eat. The color of your bedroom walls. Where you go and how you get there. The people you hang around with. What time you go to bed. What do these things have in common? You’re asking. They’re just a few examples of many hundreds of things that your parents controlled for you when you were a child.

As a kid, you didn’t have a say in everything; your parents made decisions about everything from the cereal you ate in the morning to the pajamas you wore at night. And it’s a good thing, too—kids need this kind of protection and assistance because they aren’t mature enough to take care of themselves and make careful decisions on their own.

But finally, kids grow up and become teens. And part of being a teen is developing your own identity (身份认同)—one that is separate from your parents’. But as you change and grow into this new person who makes your own decisions, your parents have a difficult time adjusting (调整) .They aren’t used to the new you yet—they only know you as the kid who had everything decided for you and didn’t mind.

In many families, it is this adjustment that can cause a lot of fighting between teens and parents. And issues like the type of friends you have or your attitudes to partying can cause bigger quarrels, because your parents still always want to protect you and keep you safe, no matter how old you are.

The good news about fighting with your parents is that in many families the arguing will lessen as parents get more comfortable with the idea that their teen has a right to certain opinions. It can take several years for parents and teens to adjust to their new roles, though. In the meantime, focus on communicating with your parents.

Sometimes this can feel impossible—like they just don’t see your point of view and never will. But talking and expressing your opinions can help you gain more respect from your parents and you may be able to reach compromises (和解) that make everyone happy. For example, if you are willing to clean your room in order to stay out an hour later. Keep in mind, too, that your parents were teens once and that in most cases, they can relate to what you’re going through.

【1】A lot of fighting breaks out between teens and parents because ________.

A.parents aren’t used to losing control of kids

B.teens like to have everything decided for them

C.parents get angry at teens not respecting them

D.teens are eager to develop their own identity

【2】In the author’s opinion, parents control teens in order to ________.

A.prevent them from having their own ideas

    B.protect them from being hurt

C.make them respect parents in the family

D.make sure that children have a good future

【3】Which of the following teenagers’ questions does the author try to answer?

A.What do parents control their children for?

B.When do parents take care of their children?

C.How do I get rid of my parents’ control?

D.Why do I fight with my parents so much?

  • 26、   Stonchenge is a famous place in England, one of the oldest and most mysterious(神秘的)places in the world. It was probably put up between 1800 B. C. and 1400 B. C. It lies in the city of Salisbury, which is about 13 km south of Stonchenge.

Stonehenge was a ring of standing stones, including upright(垂直的)stones with a horizontal(水平的)stone lying across the top. When it was completed, it was made up of a double circle of stones with two more groups of stones outside the circles. Over time, however, many of the stones have been broken by wind and rain, only a small number is still standing today.

It is unclear who built Stonchenge or even how it was built. Many of the stones must have been transported over 250 miles to Stonchenge. Single stones, some of them weighing about four tons, must have been sent on rivers and rolled over land on tree trunks(树干). They can’t have been carried! The men who moved the stones didn’t have wheels or horses. Each stone had to be moved by hand.

The purpose of Stonchenge is just as mysteries. It has been called a place to honor ancestors, a sun temple, an ancient clock and a calendar. Some people think the stones have been built in a special way to mark sunrise and sunset at certain times during the year, because the sun shines directly into the center of the stones. Others have even thought that it was an ancient generator, which is a machine to produce electricity, because it was built along energy lines in the earth and was used to make use of the earth’s natural energies.

    根据短文内容选择最佳答案。

【1】The underlined word “generator” in the passage means “________” in Chinese.

    A.发热机

【2】Stonehenge was a ring of standing stones with ________.

A.upright stones lying across the top

B.two more groups of stones outside the circles

C.a double circle of horizontal stones

【3】According to the passage, what may be the purpose of the Stonehenge?

A.It has been a place to honor ancestors.

B.It was a special way to mark where the sun rises and sets at certain places.

C.It was used to gather the sun’s energy.

【4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Stonchenge lies about 13 km east from the city of Salisbury.

B.All single stones weigh four tons.

C.People used hands to move each stone.

【5】What’s the best title of this passage?

    A.Stonchenge—a Mysterious Place

    B.Stonehenge—a Cultural Place

    C.Stonchenge—a Natural Place

  • 27、Back in March, when the COVD-19 virus had just started its deadly influence across the country and people were terrified about a lack of every daily necessity, Jonny Blue focused on one particularly urgent need. Blue, a 33-year-old doctor saw reports of people buying and storing toilet paper. He came up with a simple yet clever solution.

One Saturday morning, Blue took a piece of cardboard, wrote “Share Your Toilet Paper” on it in huge letters, and camped out on the street corner, “It just inspired me to remind people that if you have a lot of something, that probably means there are people who don’t have very much of it because you took it all,” Blue said, “So sharing it is probably a good thing to keep in mind.”

The response was immediate and positive, with motorists honking horns in support. Drivers stopped to drop off spare rolls of toilet paper, and, just as quickly, Blue handed them out.

“This guy said he just ran out and was going to a bunch of stores and couldn’t find any,”

Blue said as cars went by. “Somebody had given me some, so I gave it to him. He was excited. He was like, ‘Do you want me to pay you?’ I said, ‘No, man. Take it.’”

A moment later, a driver in a white pickup truck slowed down just enough to take out a roll to add to Blue’s collections.

“People are loving it,” Blue said. “They’re honking, smiling, laughing. It’s kind of a hard time right now. People want a sense of community.”
