  • 24、Why do you think people in some hot countries eat very spicy(辛辣的)food? Is it because the spices make the food taste better? Is it just because their parents and grandparents and great-grandparents liked hot food,or is there any connection(联系) between spices and healthy food?

Scientists think that it is because spice plants have some important chemicals(化学物质).These chemicals can kill bacteria(细菌).

“Most common spices can kill 75 to 100 percent of the bacteria in food,”explains one of the scientists. The bacteria grow more easily and spoil(使变质) food more quickly at higher temperatures. For this reason,it is more difficult to keep food from spoiling in hot climates,

Do you like your food spicy? Your answer probably tells something about the country you are from.If you like spicy food,it is possible that hundreds of years ago, when there were no fridges, people in your country started using spices to keep the food from spoiling. The traditional spicy dishes helped those people to live longer, healthier lives.Today,in a time of fridges, the spices just make the food taste better

  • 25、My friend Mary came to school wearing a brand-new pair of Zee jeans. “Your new Zee jeans are so cute!” I said.

“My grandma took me clothes shopping last weekend,” Mary said. “The Zee jeans were on sale. They have cool pockets and are unbelievably comfortable. When you’re at my house after school, try them on and see for yourself.”

“Hmm.” I didn’t think so. But when I tried them on, I couldn’t help agreeing. “I’m totally taking these!” I said. As soon as I got home, I told my mom that I had to get some Zee jeans.

Mom said, “You already have three pairs of perfectly good jeans. There is no way Dad and I are paying that much for a pair of pants. If you want to buy them with your own money, I would be happy to make a long list of extra chores you can do.”

“I’ll start this minute,” I said.

It took me three weeks to save enough money. I changed kitty litter, watched my little brother and sister, and cleaned refrigerator. The refrigerator cleaning was the worst because one of the shelves fell while I was taking everything out. Food and milk splashed all over the floor. It took me one and a half hour to clean it up!

Anyway, I finally bought my Zee jeans, and I loved them even more than I thought I would. I loved them half because they had cool pockets and super comfortable, and half because I had worked so hard to earn the money to buy them myself.

1Who bought the new Zee jeans for Mary?

    A. Her mother.   B. Herself.   C. Her friend.   D. Her grandmother.

2Why did mom not want to buy a pair of Zee jeans to the writer?

    A. She got money from her mom.

    B. She made money by doing housework.

    C. She borrowed money from Mary.

    D. She asked her grandma to buy them for her.

  • 26、On May 23, Shenzhen introduced tough new rules in order to discourage the “Chinese style of crossing the road”. “Chinese people cross roads without thinking about traffic lights, so long as they are part of a crowd,” said a post(帖子) on Sina Weibo.

A CCTV news program showed that in only an hour, more than 600 people jumped red lights when crossing a road in Shijiazhuang, Hebei.

Many people say that they jaywalk (乱穿马路) because the red light lasts too long. Such an opinion is supported by a research team at Tongji University. The team did research on people’s waiting times at different road crossings for three years. They found that Chinese people would wait for 70 to 90 seconds before they lost their patience. “People are likely to ignore (忽视) the light when the waiting time is longer than they can bear,” said Ni Ying, a member of the research team.

However, a survey on Sina Weibo suggested that people jaywalk mainly because they ignore rules. “I always obey traffic rules. Time is important but safety should come first,” someone wrote on his Weibo.

Many countries give out punishments to jaywalkers. In Singapore, the maximum(最大的)can be three months in prison(监狱). Some Chinese cities have started taking some actions, too. For example, the first three people in a jaywalking group will be fined 50 yuan in Shijiazhuang.

But calling on people to respect rules is more important. To completely solve the problem, everyone should realize the importance of obeying the traffic rules.

【1】What does the phrase “the team” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.A CCTV news program.

B.A research group at Tongji University.

    C.A post on Sina Weibo.

    D.A daily newspaper.

【2】How long will Chinese people wait for to cross the road before they lose patience?

    A.About five minutes.

    B.Less than one minute.

C.Less than one and a half minutes.

    D.More than ten minutes.

【3】The writer suggests that we should __________ to solve the problem of jaywalking.

    A.punish the jaywalkers

B.reduce (减少) the time of red lights

    C.ignore the traffic rules

D.call on people to obey the traffic rules

  • 27、   Teachers say that the digital(数字) age has had a good influence and a not-so-good influence on American teenagers. More than 2,000 middle and high school teachers took an online survey. Researchers also spoke with teachers in some groups. Most teachers think the Internet and digital search tools have had a mostly positive influence on their students' research habits and skills. But at the same timesome teachers also point out some problems in teenagers' using digital search tools.

The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the College Board and the National Writing Project. Judy Buchanan is the director of the National Writing Project and a co-writer of the report. She says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster. "Both teachers and students really welcome these tools because they make learning exciting. And the goal is to really help students become creators of something meaningful, and not just users of the online information.”

But one problem the survey found is that these technologies make teenagers have short attention spans(持续时间). As there is huge amount of information about different subjects on the Internet, teenagers' attention is easily drawn away from their research.

Another problem the survey found is that many students trust the information they find on the Internet too much. Judy Buchanan says these students have not developed the skills to judge the online information. They need to learn a lot to tell if the information is believable. It's something that really has to be paid attention to.

One more problem the survey found is something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online. Many students think "doing research" now means just doing a quick search on Google. Teachers say the result is a drop in the wish and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. That is, they are overly dependent on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research librarians.

Many teachers also say that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

1The result of the survey shows   .

A.digital search tools need to be greatly improved

B.digital search tools are generally good for teenagers

C.teenagers have difficulty in using digital search tools

D.American teachers enjoy using digital search tools

2Using digital search tools makes teenagers   .

A.less trusting of online information B.more independent in doing research

C.more willing to work hard to find answers D.less able to pay full attention while searching

3To do better in research, teenagers should   .

A.spend more time searching online B.ask their teachers for more advice

C.make better use of printed materials D.learn more knowledge of search tools
