四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、I work for a big store and today a group of soldiers(士兵) came into the store on their way to Bridgeport. A customer came to me and said that she wanted to pay for all that the soldiers wanted to buy. All of them! She asked how it could be done because she didn’t want others to know about this.

I told her that she could buy a gift card and that I would open up a register(登记表) and just ring all of them up on one ticket. She agreed and wondered how much of a card to buy, $500 or $600. Looking around and seeing that they were just buying sandwiches and drinks, I thought $500 or $600 was too much and $300 was enough. She agreed with me so she had one card for $300 and said if there was anything left, she would come back later to pick it up.

I opened a register and asked all soldiers to come through check stand(收款台) No.1. The customer quickly left the store. As the young men and women began to come through with their things, they all had their wallets out and I got to tell them that all their things had been paid for! I let them know where the gifts came from and they all said thank you and called me sir.

As it turned out, they were only some of the soldiers who were about to enter our store. They just kept coming and coming. Other members of our neighborhood saw what was going on and that the tab(待付账单)had easily been over $300 and began handing me money to pay the rest. However, after accepting the rest of the money from the others, there was still over $230 left.

I was deeply moved by people’s love and support for those who serve our country.

  • 25、(题文)Every morning my father buys a newspaper on his way to work. Every evening my mother looks through magazines at home. And every night, I look at the posters with photos of David Beckham and Yao Ming on my bedroom wall before I go to sleep. Can we imagine life without paper or print?

Paper was first created about 2,000 years ago, and has been made from silk, cotton, bamboo, and, since the 19th century, from wood. People learned to write words on paper to make a book. But in those days, books could only be produced one at a time by hand. As a result, they were expensive and rare. And because there weren’t many hooks, few people learned to read.

Then printing was invented in China. When printing was developed greatly at the beginning of the 11th century, books could be produced more quickly and cheaply. As a result, more people learned to read. After that, knowledge and ideas spread quickly.

Today information can be received online, downloaded from the Internet rather than found in books, and information can be kept on CD-ROMs or machines such as MP3 players.

Computers are already used in classrooms, and newspapers and magazines can already be read online. So will books be replaced by computers one day? No, I don’t think the Yao Ming poster on my bedroom wall will ever be replaced by a computer two metres high!

Once there was a strong camel. She liked dancing very much. She wanted to be a ballet (芭蕾舞) dancer. “To make every movement a thing of beauty,” said the camel, “is my dream.”

Again and again she practiced. She repeated the five basic positions a hundred times each day. She worked for long months under the hot sun, but not once did she think of stopping.

At last the camel said, “Now, I am a dancer.” She gave a performance and danced before an invited group of friends. She did very well. When her dance was over, she made a deep bow.

There was no applause (鼓掌). Instead, everyone laughed at her.

“I must tell you frankly,” said one of her friends, “you are lumpy and humpy. You don’t have any talent in dancing. You are, like the rest of us, simply a camel. You are just an animal. You are not and never will be a ballet dancer!” With these words, they moved away across the sand, laughing and joking.

“How wrong they are!” said the camel. “I have worked hard. I will be a good dancer. I will dance and dance just for myself.” That is what she did. It gave her many years of pleasure.

She practiced hard and made much progress in her dancing skills. Occasionally, the camel was chosen to perform at an animal party before her old friends. The camel was lucky because she knew exactly what she wanted and she never gave up.

    C. They enjoyed it excitedly.   D. They were surprised at it.

3Which of the following words can best describe the camel?

    A. Crazy.   B. Confident.   C. Proud.   D. Unlucky.

4What can we learn from the story?
