四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、The baby is just one day old and has not left hospital yet. She is quiet but alert (警觉). Twenty centimeters from her face the researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it. She stares at it carefully.

A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another one, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze(凝视)starts to lose its focus until a third card is presented. The third card has three black spots on it. Her gaze returns: she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world? Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer?

The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes. Perhaps it is just the newness? When a little older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again.

Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats (鼓声) than when they heard just two; likewise (同样地) when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.

【1】The experiment described in Paragraph 1 is mainly about the baby’s ________.

    A.sense of hearing

    B.sense of sight

    C.sense of touch

    D.sense of smell

【2】According to the passage, babies have a strong sense of changing in ________.

    A.the size of cards

    B.the colour of pictures

    C.the shape of patterns

    D.the number of objects

【3】Where does this passage probably come from?

    A.Science fiction.

    B.Children’s literature.

    C.An advertisement.

    D.A science report

  • 25、There are different ways in which people try to deal with the problem of energy. One way is the greater production of common energy sources(能源), such as coal, oil and gas. The trouble with these sources, however, is that they are not renewable.

Another way is energy conservation(节能), which means using energy more efficiently(有效地). In some very cold countries people build special houses to save energy. They place materials between the inside and the outside of the walls of the house to keep the cold out and the warmth in. The house is heated by the lights, the body heat of the people and the other equipment in it.

Finally, renewable energy sources are used even though they are often expensive to develop. One form of these is geothermal energy. In certain parts of the world the temperature of the earth increases thirty degrees centigrade with each kilometre down. At six kilometres, therefore, t rises to nearly two hundred degrees. To get the heat, water is pumped(压;抽)down into the ocks and back up to the surface. Heat from the earth is already used in certain countries.

【1】The writer tells about the "special houses" because they __________

    A. show the excellent skills of the builders

    B. serve as an example of energy conservation

    C. are heated by different sources of energy

    D. are warmer than other types of houses

【2】The underlined words geothermal energy in the third paragraph mean________

    A. renewable source

    B. underground source

    C. heat inside the earth

    D. temperature of the earth

【3】At a place where the surface temperature is 15℃, how deep do you have to dig so as to get a temperature of 75℃?

    A. One km. B. Two km.

    C. Three km.   D. Four km.

  • 26、How quickly can you count from one to ten? Do you use ten different words to do it? Can you do it in English, or do you have to use your first languages? Do you count on your fingers? Many people think that numbers and math are the same all over the world. But scientists have discovered that it is not true.

People in different parts of the world use different ways to count on their fingers. In the United States, people think begin counting with their first fingers, which they extend or stick out. They then extend the rest of their fingers and finally the thumb(拇指)to count to five. Then they repeat this with the other hand to get to ten. In China, people count by using different finger positions. In this way, a Chinese person can easily count to ten on only one hand.

Besides ways of finger counting, scientists have found that cultures and languages are also different when it comes to numbers. Some languages have only a few words for numbers, and others have no words for numbers. A group of scientists studied aboriginal(土著的)people in Australia. These people don’t have hand movements to stand for numbers. They don’t even have word for numbers. However, they are still able to understand different ideas about numbers.

In a similar study, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discovered that people of the Piraha tribe (部落) in northwestern Brazil don’t have words for numbers such as “one” or “three.”. They are not able to say “five trees” or “ten trees” but can say “some trees,” “more trees,” or “many trees.” Professor Edward Gibson said that mist people believe that everyone knows how to count, “but here is a group that does not count. They could learn, but isn’t not useful in their culture, so they’ve never picked it up.”

Although all humans are able to understand quantities(数量),not all languages have numbers and not all people use counting. Number words in a certain language are a result of people needing numbers in their daily lives. Now we know that people have different ideas about numbers and math, too.

1The writer begins with the four questions in order to______.

    A. make a survey  B. interest readers

    C. tell a story  D. solve math problems

2What do we learn from the difference in finger counting between the U.S. and China?

    B. People from China need two hands to count from one to ten.

    C. People of different cultures may use different ways of finger counting

    D. People of different cultures use the same way of finger counting.

3Which of following is true about aboriginal Australians?

    A. They have only a few words for numbers

    B. They have hand movements to stand for numbers

    C. They can only count to five on their fingers

    D. They can understand different ideas about numbers

4The study of the Piraha tribe shows that____

    A. people all over the world know how to count

    B. People of the tribe have words for number

    C. Some groups of people are not smart enough to count

D, Counting is not useful in the culture of the tribe

5 What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. people from different cultures have different ideas about numbers and math

    B. Chinese people can count more easily on their fingers than Americans

    C. In some aboriginal culture,p eople don’t even know how to count

    D. Some languages don’t have number words because people don’t need numbers.

  • 27、I recently read about a girl named Hope Elizabeth Stout. After learning more about her life, I got the feeling that she had been named “Hope” for a good reason, something of her life has lived on.

In June 2003, Stout was very much like any other 12-year-old girl. She was looking forward to her family’s annual beach trip. But a sudden pain in her knee changed everything. After conducting some tests, doctors found that she had bone cancer.

Stout began to receive painful treatments. She never lost hope and believed that in the end, she would be able to beat cancer. Unfortunately, the treatments did little to stop the disease from spreading. By November, she was forced to use a wheelchair to get around. Then, something magical happened. It changed many lives.

In the United States, there is the Make-A-Wish (MAW) foundation. It helps children in need fulfill their wishes. In November 2003, MAW visited Stout and told the girl she could have anything she wanted.

Stout thought for a few minutes and then answered, “I am still lucky. I have been to Disney World and swum with dolphins in Mexico. I went to the beach all the time. Did you just say there are 155 kids on your waiting list? Well, my wish is to let their wishes be fulfilled — all 155 of them.”

It was hard for MAW to fulfill Stout’s wish — it would cost nearly $750,000. However, it sprang into action. Newspapers, radio and TV stations shared the story. A local company got the ball rolling with a $25,000 donation.

Sadly, Stout didn’t live to see the happy ending of this story. She passed away on January 4, 2004. After her death, donations poured into the MAW office even faster. On January 16, MAW announced that they had raised $1,116,000 — enough to fulfill all 155 wishes. Finally, Stout’s wish came true.

【1】According to the article, what does the Make-A-Wish foundation do?

A.It helps sick people to make wishes.

B.It helps children in need achieve their wishes.

C.It helps children raise money for cancer treatment.

D.It helps spread children’s stories through the media.

【2】What did Stout hope MAW to do?

A.To have $750,000 to cure herself.

B.To leave something good of her in the world.

C.To visit Disney World and swim with dolphins in Mexico.

D.To fulfill the wishes of all the 155 kids on the waiting list.

【3】Why did Stout still think she was lucky?

A.Because she had a chance to meet MAW.

B.Because she had spent a wonderful childhood.

C.Because she would beat cancer and get well soon.

D.Because she was able to use a wheelchair to get around.

【4】Donations poured into the MAW office even faster after Stout’s death because ________.

    A.her story moved more people

B.more companies got the ball rolling

C.American people were getting richer and richer

D.the wishes of more children need to be realized sooner

【5】Which of the following can be the best title for the article?

    A.Wishes on The List

    B.The MAW Foundation

    C.A Little Girl’s Wish

    D.An Optimistic Little Girl
