Dwayne sat staring at the peeling(剥落了的)paint on the walls of the small, messy room he shared with his two younger brothers. Through the apartment walls he could hear the crying of the neighbor’s newborn child competing with the music from the cars below. Dwayne sat and stared at the blank paper in front of him, considering how he would write a composition about his life.
Mama wouldn’t be home for another half an hour, so Dwayne went to the kitchen to prepare dinner for his family. With Mama's low income(收入), there wasn’t much to choose from.
“I’m hungry,” said eight-year-old Raymond. “What do you have cooking?”
Holding his brother around the waist, Dwayne responded, “I’ve got my famous bean and rice casserole(砂锅菜).Want to help? ”
“I want to help, too!” cried Jesse.
Shortly after 7: 00 pm, Mama got home. She saw her three sons laughing as they worked together setting the mismatched plates and forks. In the middle of the table she eyed an old baby food jar with a flowering weed that was pulled from the front yard.
“Mmm-mm! Is that your famous bean and rice casserole?” Mama asked..
“Mama, you’re home!?” the two younger boys said as they raced to hug her.
After the dinner, Mama stood behind Dwayne as he sat at the kitchen table, adding the last sentence to his composition. “Son, what are you writing?”
“Mama, it’s my composition,” came his reply.
“And what is that composition about?”
“It’s about our life,” said Dwayne.
Dwayne’s mother looked around at the house. She thought about all the things she wished she could provide for her family.
“Dwayne, I’m sorry you don’t have a lot in your life,” his mama said.
“I have you and Raymond and Jesse. I live in a house full of love. I wouldn’t trade what we have for all the money in the world.”
Pulling her son close, she whispered. “Neither would I, Dwayne. Neither would I.”

25、We touch our faces all the time, and it had never seemed to be a big problem-until COVID-19 arrived. Touching our faces-the “T-zone” of our eyes, nose and mouth-can mean giving ourselves this virus. This is why some organizations have suggested that we should avoid touching our faces. William Sawyer, from Henry the Hand, told The Washington Post, “Just stop this simple behavior, and that would be better than any vaccine (疫苗) ever created.”
However, stopping this “simple” behavior might be harder than you think because we are used to it. Some face-touching is an automatic reaction-like when there is an itch (痒) on your nose, you’ll touch it again and again without thinking. A 2014 study found that touching your face also helps you to have less stress. For example, it’s possible for you to do it when you feel embarrassed. According to Dacher Keltner, psychologist at the University of California Berkeley, US, this action may also have a social use: When you are talking to someone, for example, touching your face means you want to talk about another thing.
Besides, it’s very hard to change this face-touching “because you don’t even know you’re doing it”, said Sawyer.
But you’re not alone. In a 2015 study, it was found that a group of medical students touched their faces about 23 times an hour-with 44 percent of the touches in the “T-zones”. That was very surprising because medical students should know better. Since it’s so hard to shake the habit, maybe the easiest way is to wash our hands more often. This way, we can be sure that our hands are safe from COVID-19.

27、Have you ever heard Auld Lang Syne? “Auld Lang Syne” means, in English, “old days gone by”. People in Britain usually sing this song at parties and most famously on New Year’s Eve.
Auld Lang Syne was actually a poem written by Robert Burns in Scottish in 1788. Robert Burns was born in Scotland in 1759 to a poor family on the farm. His family often had nothing to eat. He had little education and taught himself through self-study. Even from an early age, Burns began to show his writing talent.
His first collection of poems came out when he was 27, which earned him four hundred dollars, a large sum of money at that time. When the French Revolution (革命), he supported the revolution and in 1792 he sent four small guns to Paris. He further expressed his support by writing a number of poems. In these poems Burns called on people to fight for a happy life in the future. During the last 9 years of his life, Burns did a great deal of work in collecting and editing traditional Scottish songs. He refused to accept any pay, although he was in bad need of money. He continued the work until he died on 21 July, 1796.
He wrote poems in the tradition of Scottish folk songs. Many Burns’ works are of love and friendship. Much of the effect for Burns’ works of art was gathered from his surroundings—the places he travelled to, the culture and the people he loved at that time. His poems speak straight from the heart of a farmer to express the common feelings of millions of working people in simplest words. One of his world-famous works is A Red, Red (1794).
He is still remembered as Scotland’s national poet, more than 250 years after his death. A national Burns Night is held in Scotland and in other places throughout the world every year on his birthday, 25 January.
