四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Slavery (奴隶制) was one of the darkest periods in American history. It cannot be ignored. This term, we are reading a novel called The Longest Memory by British author Fred D’Aguiar. Its story is told through the eyes of many different people. From their narration, we can see what society looked like during the period before the American Civil War (美国内战).

The Longest Memory tells the story of a brave and intelligent young slave, Chapel, who falls in love with the daughter of a plantation owner (种植园主). They decide to head to the north, where black men can marry white women. However, the boy’s father, Whitechapel, doesn’t agree with him and causes him to be caught. Chapel is then whipped (鞭打) to death.

Why does Whitechapel report his son’s plan to the plantation owner? This is one thing that confuses many readers. But as we understand each character in depth, we can figure it out. Whitechapel teaches young slaves to obey their masters. Therefore, his own master respects him a great deal. He starts to think that slaves can live comfortably as long as they listen to the plantation owner.

This belief is based on the idea that slavery will never end. However, Chapel is educated. He sees a more colorful world in the books he reads and wants to be free. He represents change for the future, which his dad fears. Whitechapel’s belief might be a good way for slaves to protect themselves. But that doesn’t change the fact that slavery is inhumane (不人道的) and must end. Pioneers (先锋) like Chapel should be encouraged.

【1】The story of the The Longest Memory was based on ________.

A.slavery in the pre-Civil War US

    B.the American Civil War

    C.the first World War

    D.the American Revolution

【2】Chapel and the daughter of a plantation owner decide to go to the north because ________.

A.they want to go on an adventure

B.they want to make more money

    C.they can get married there

D.they want to live with Chapel’s father

【3】According to the author, why does Whitechapel report his son?

A.He wants to protect his son and the girl.

B.He thinks slaves should follow their master’s orders.

C.He is worried that his son will be punished by the owner.

D.He doesn’t want to be separated from his son.

    【4】Chapel represents people who ________.

A.want to live comfortably forever as slaves

B.start to make changes for the future

C.want to unite the north and the south

D.work hard and are respected by their owners

  • 25、   In the modern age, human society runs on energy. Most machines need electricity to operate. Humans cannot live without electricity even a single day in their daily life and work. They have many different ways to create electricity. But some ways are harmful to the environment.

For example, fossil fuels (化石燃料) are the most common kind of energy. They include coal, oil, and natural gas. First, people have to dig them from the ground. This can sometimes harm the environment. However, scientists are creating cleaner and better ways to do that these days. So the environment is not harmed as much as before. But when people burn these fossil fuels, they can give off a lot of harmful gases, which is considered to be one of the greatest causes of global warning. This might harm the environment.

Tidal (潮汐) energy is another way to make electricity. This uses the ocean tides to make electricity. But some kinds of tidal energy can kill many fish and other sea animals. Also dams (大坝) can create lots of clean energy. But dams create lakes and change the way that rivers run. So they can do great harm to the balance of nature around the lakes and along the rivers.

  • 27、   Artificial intelligence(人工智能), or AI in short, is the science of giving computers and machines ability to think and work like humans. AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies. AI is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. As a result, facial recognition(面部识别)is used a lot in the world. Chinese police use this technology to identify criminals(罪犯).Once they caught a criminal when he attended a concert. It also checks the ID of ride-hailing(网约车)drivers and lets people pay for things with a smile.

AI is also used in self-driving cars, which are believed to be the future of driving. Most drivers may wave or nod at passers-by to let them cross the street, but self-driving cars don't have this ability. Carmakers are testing a light signal system to help them "speak" to humans. The system can show what self-driving cars will do. For example, if a driverless car is yielding(让路), it will flash two white lights side to side. A rapidly flashing light tells passers-by that the car is about to speed up.

Service Robots also show you how powerful AI is. Imagine this—you come back home from school and your robot housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner, he teaches you to play the piano, just like a real music teacher. Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world. In the future, more and more service robots will become good home helpers. AI is so powerful that it can help human beings and even replace us in many jobs.

1What does the underlined word "identify" mean in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.To let somebody know his mistakes.

B.To come to realize and tell who is who.

C.To take somebody to the police station.

    D.To tell somebody something important.

2According to the passage, what is facial recognition used for?

    A.Driving cars. B.Making people smile.

    C.Calling the police. D.Checking people's information.

3Which technology has been used in real life according to the passage?

A.Service Robots at school. B.Robots as ride-hailing drivers.

C.Facial recognition for payment. D.Light signals for self-driving cars.

4According to the passage, how many ways can AI be used in the future?

    A.One. B.Two C.Three D.Four.

5What can we learn from the passage?

A.People use AI in many different ways.

B.AI will take the pace of human beings in all jobs.

C.Self-driving cars will be able to talk like humans.

D.A criminal was caught for inventing facial recognition.
