四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Not long ago ,people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old .Yet doctors in the united states say babies begin learning on their first day of life .

Scientists note that babies are strongly influnced by their environment .they say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes .A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregiver .This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings .

one study shows that babies can learn before they are born .The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant (怀孕)woman .Then ,they played a recording of a short story .On the day the baby was born ,the researchers tried to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother .they did this by placing a device (装置)in the mouth of the newborn baby .

The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way .If the baby moved his mouth the other way ,he would hear a different story .The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born . They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear story again and again .

Another study shows how mothers can strongly influnce social development and language skills in their children .

Researchers studied the children from the age of one mouth to three years .The researchers tried to measure the sensitivity (敏感度)of the mothers .The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere (干涉)unnecessarily .They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old .Also ,the researchers observed the women for signs of depression(抑郁).

The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression .The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear .

These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people .The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligent development of their children .Children did better when their mothers were caring ,even when they suffered from depression .

1According to the passage ,which of the following is NOT the fator that influences intelligence development in babies ?

    A. Their peers (同龄人)   B. The environment

    C. Mother’s sensitivity   D. Education before birth

2What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories ?

    A. To prove that babies can learn before they are born

    B. To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born

    C. To show that early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills

    D. To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies

3Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills ?

    A. Children with high communication abilities

    B. The children of depressed but caring mothers

    C. The children of women who did not suffer from depression

    D. The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children

4What is the main idea of the passage ?

    A. Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth

    B. Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies

    C. Scientific findings about how the stories have effects on babies’ intelligence

    D. A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are five or six months old

  • 25、Why do people grow green plants on the houses or tall buildings? Cities call it concrete jungles (水泥丛林) or green roofs. In many people’s minds, cities don’t have enough green. Green roofs are great to look at and great for the environment. They also give people fresh food and help people make more money.

Now roof gardens are becoming popular in New York City. Some people plant fruit and vegetables on the roof, like tomatoes, eggplants, and watermelons.

“I water my vegetables every morning and sell them in the afternoon, so they are very fresh,” said Zaba, a shopkeeper in New York. In fact, he started planting fruit and vegetables on the roof 15 years ago. Half the food in his shop comes from his roof garden.

Some people even keep bees on their roofs. Kurt has 250 boxes of bees. He says the little bees are good for cities. They can not only pollinate plants, but also clean the city’s air. Of course, they can give people honey, too.

Judge the following sentences true (T) or false (F) according to the passage.

【1】Green roofs are bad for the city environment.

【2】Green roofs give people fresh food and help people make money.

【3】People in New York City like roof gardens very much.

【4】A shopkeeper named Zaba lives in New York City.

【5】In New York City, some people even keep bees in their houses.

  • 26、At some point in our lives during childhood, we have been told to “jump more” in order to grow taller. A couple in China encouraged their 12-year-old son to jump 1,000 times a day. They had also offered him 10 yuan for every 1,000 jumps he did. Why would any parent want their child to jump a thousand times every single day? This kid is 145cm, and the average height for kids of that age is 152cm. As typical Asian parents, they want him to grow taller and they also believed that jumping could help.

The boy’ s father gave him a jump rope and managed to convince (说服) him to start jumping. From that day on, he used the jump rope every day unless he fell sick, and he even jumped up to 3,000 times per day. After one whole year of jumping, the parents rewarded a total of 4,000 yuan. However, the boy not only did not grow taller, but he ended up being the shortest student in his class.

It turns out that he had been, spending the money that he earned on unhealthy snacks like potato chips! This explained the mystery where he often lost his appetite (食欲) at the dinner table and the “unexplainable” weight gain. His parents thought he was going through a hard time with study, but he was actually just snacking endlessly.

So, this is a clear example of how jumping rope does not help kids grow taller. Parents should really just accept that height is mainly affected by the parents’ genes, and also a healthy, balanced diet.

【1】Why did the parents ask their kid to do more rope jumping?

    A.To build up his body.

B.To let his kids lose weight.

C.To let his kids grow taller.

D.To give him more pocket money.

    【2】What surprised the parents?

A.Their kid almost jumped every day.

B.Their kid fell ill because of jumping rope.

C.Their kid became taller and taller.

D.Their kid became the shortest one in his class.

【3】Why did the boy eat less at the dinner table?

A.Because he ate too many snacks.

B.Because he didn’t like the food at home.

C.Because he wasn’t good at his study.

D.Because he got hurt while jumping

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Exercise is important in the children’s growth.

B.It’s not right to ask the kids to jump rope.

C.Parents’ traditional thought turns out to be not correct.

D.The height of children mainly depends on sleep and diet.

  • 27、   A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apples he grew.

One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home, he did not know where to plant it.

He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit.

Finally he planted the tree in his woods (树林) where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died.

Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place. "What's the difference?” the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted the tree in one of my fields, my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit.”

"Yes," said the friend, "but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have robbed (抢夺) everyone of the fruit, but also you have destroyed (摧毁) a good apple tree!"

1Why didn't the farmer want to plant the tree in his field?

A.He thought strangers would steal the fruit.

B.He thought the tree would die.

C.He thought his children would take the fruit.

D.He thought his neighbors would steal the fruit.

2Where did the farmer plant the young tree?

A.Near the road. B.In his field. C.In his woods. D.Near the house.

3Why did the young tree die in the end?

A.Strangers pulled out the tree. B.His neighbors cut down the tree.

C.His children broke the tree. D.There was less sunlight and poor soil.

4What does the story tell us?

A.We should care about others' feelings.

B.We should learn to share beautiful things.

C.The young tree can provide apples for us when it grows up.

D.The young tree can grow up one day.

五、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 28、History is the story of us, human beings. Everyone who has lived and everything that has h1 are part of history. But history is not only what happened in the past. The word also means the study of the past, through old w2 records and other kinds of facts.

Why do we study history? One r3 is that we enjoy it. A good story is even better if it is true, and history is full of good s4 though they can be terrible too. A more serious reason is to understand o5 and the world we live in. To understand events happening now, we need to know their causes. We cannot understand the p6 if we know nothing about the past. History helps us understand why things are the way they are.

Of course, history books cannot tell us everything about the past, not even everything that i7 recorded. A history of the world has to pick out the people and events t8 changed the world.

Since ancient times, great civilizations have appeared in d9 countries and regions. Usually, only three or four existed at the same time. While they lasted they changed the l10 not only of their own people, but of their neighbors, today.
