  • 24、Fortune (幸运) or disaster, we will never know which will happen tomorrow. What we can do is to live every day like it’s your last. Enjoy it and make it meaningful.

Make it your daily habit to show thanks. Show thanks for another day to breathe, to dream and to achieve the goals for your life. Hug and kiss your family and your friends. Write cards. Send positive e-mail communications.

Learn to laugh. E. E. Cummings once said, “The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.” Laughing and smiling are the best medicine of all illnesses. They keep life of a joy. Stay with fun people and don’t get caught up in your own sense of importance.

Try to improve 1% each day. Big things can result from taking small steps. As Lao Tzu once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” It means trying to get a little closer to fulfilling your dreams and goals. • 26、There are millions of recipes (菜谱) hidden in the boxes and hearts of grandmother and parents. These family recipes are a special part of our family history. People have passed down some of them from generation (一代人) to generation.

“I realized I couldn’t go home every weekend for my mom's delicious dishes,” says Shreya. She is about to enter university and has recently started following her mother around the kitchen, taking notes on how to make her special tastes. She adds, “I am looking to the day when my kids will come to know of their grandmothers through the dishes they cooked.”

But many of us find it difficult to keep the food connection with our busy life. Even if we have time, not many of us take the effort to collect and record the recipes from our grandmothers and parents. We often get a recipe on the phone and take it down quickly on a piece of paper. We just stick it onto the fridge for a week or two and forget about it as soon as the paper disappears.

Actually, there are simple ways to keep family recipes. Scrapbooks (剪贴薄) are easily found in the market. You can even add photos to record every detail of your memories about the recipe. You can also use some popular apps like Story Scans to record family recipes. You just scan (扫描) the recipes and record the story behind each of them. It can become the most meaningful work you have ever done with and for your family.

Keeping family recipes is saving and honoring our tradition so that future generations can continue to make family ties stronger. Every time you remember your loved ones, recreate one of the dishes from your collection and let the memories from the good old days comfort you. So why not gift your kids a family recipe book when they are starting a new life?

  • 27、If you bought some candy months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it’s still eatable? The easiest way is to check the “expiration dateEXP printed on the cover. If that date has already passed, you may throw the candy away. But is that really necessary?

According to a new report from the NRDC, tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don’t fully understand what expiration dates actually mean, so they think the food is not safe to eat.

Food dating was introduced in 1975 because customers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up, use-by dates only showed freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.

However, most customers mistakenly believed that use-by dates showed how safe the food was. But the truth is that these dates have nothing to do with the danger of food poisoning(中毒). Eggs, can still be eaten three to five weeks after being bought, even though the use﹣by dates is much earlier. When their use-by dates pass, strawberry-flavored drinks may lose their red color and cookies may lose their crunch(松脆的口感), but they are not harmful.

“It’s an unclear subject, the difference between food quality and food safety,” said Jane Roberts from a US food testing company. “Even the workmates in the food factory are not sure about it. This is why the use-by dates must be printed on the covers of products. We hope it can help customers understand the information so that they won’t waste a lot of food.”

But this won’t be a mistake that is easy to correct, because people have believed it for so long. Another problem is that the quality levels of different foods change differently. Some are still eatable long after their use-by date while others are not.

As a result, food factory officials are not thinking of changing the use-by dates to a date which can show when the food is to be thrown away.

【1】Every year, why is tons of food thrown away?

A.Because it is no longer delicious.

B.Because it is no longer fresh.

C.Because people think it’s not safe to cat.

D.Because the use-by dates are wrongly printed.

【2】What did the use-by dates show at first according to the passage?

    A.Food safety.

    B.Food quality.

    C.Food freshness.

    D.Food producer.

【3】What do the underlined words “expiration date (EXP)” mean?

    A.生产日期

    B.出厂期

    C.包装期

    D.有效期

【4】What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A.Even after their expiration dates pass, some foods are still safe to cat.

B.“Expiration dates” were first used to show when food was possible to go bud.

C.Most customers care more about freshness than food safety.

D.Most customers fully understand what expiration dates mean.

【5】What’s probably the best title for this passage?

    A.Food dating.

    B.Expiration dates and food safety.

    C.Customers and food.

    D.Food quality and freshness.
