24、
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have been stuck indoors. Online classes and working from home mean a lot of sitting around on your butt.
We already know that if we don’t move much, we get fatter, we get heart problems and maybe we get diabetes (糖尿病). But new studies have shown that it could hurt our mental (心理的) health too.
A study of 1020 Brazilian adults during the pandemic found that about 30% of them sat around for more than 10 hours per day. It reported that people who sat for too long often showed more symptoms of depression (抑郁的症状).
Another study looked at children. It found that each extra hour of sitting time at ages 12, 14 and 16 led to higher depression scores by age 18. Eighteen-year-old people who sat most often had depression scores 28% higher than those who were more active.
Scientists are not sure yet about the link between too much sitting and depression. But according to Mats Hallgren from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, “Sitting for too long can slow blood flow in the body, including blood flow to the brain.” It might also affect the growth of neurons (神经细胞) in the brain. And couch potatoes might do other unhealthy things while sitting, such as snacking on junk food. All these may lead to depression.
The good news? It’s easy to overcome (克服). Aaron Kandola from University College London, UK, said “all types” of movement might help, even light activity.
“It is great to exercise and play sports,” said Kandola. “But anything you can do to avoid sitting for too long will help with mood, stress and thinking clearly.” The key message is just to move more, more often.
【1】What might happen if we don’t move much?
A.We will be mentally healthier.
B.We will feel more energetic.

A.People who don’t move very much.
B.People who love to eat potatoes on the couch.
C.People who don’t have enough blood in their bodies.

【4】What can we learn from the text?
A.It is difficult to overcome problems caused by sitting too long.

C.Staying at home is good for one’s mental health.
D.More exercise can help improve one’s mood.
25、Giving gifts is a kind of knowledge, is also one kind of strategy(策略). In the western countries, you should be careful of giving gifts. Never give a gift in a job interview or at a business meeting. Gifts are usually given during special holidays, or as a “ thank you” for special invitations. When arriving at a special party, you may give your gift to the host once the introductions are made. Here are a few rules:
Be modest(适度) with your gift. Do not buy gifts that are too expensive, such as a Swiss watch, a gold ring or a gold necklace. A special food from your country, a bottle of wine, candy, or flowers are the best if you do not know the host very well, but be sure that your gift will not need much attention. You can usually say something like “ I hope you will like it.” when you offer your gift.
Be careful of giving wine. A bottle of wine is usually all right if you know your host drinks wine, but hard alcohol(酒精) such as whisky(威士忌) should only be given as a gift when you know the host well and are certain that they would like such a gift. Flowers are good, but remember: roses are for special love. You have to be careful.
A small cultural gift from your country is usually very good. Make sure that your gift is packed(包装) nicely. A nice card with it will be better.

26、You know how much your telephone has changed over the past 10 years? Your car will change even more than that in the next 10 years. One of the biggest changes is that cars will drive themselves.
"We certainly have the technology for it now." says Andrew Poliak of automotive(机动车辆的)technology supplier QNX ."We expect self-driving cars to be a mainstream(主流)thing between 2020 and 2025."
The American company Google has been working on self-driving cars for years. These cars are already on the roads in the United States and are truly self-driving. Last week, the police ordered one of Google's cars to stop for driving too slowly on a public road. The car was not breaking any law, so no one was punished.
Another American company, Tesla, added an "Autopilot" feature(特点) to its cars last month. With the Autopilot turned on, the vehicle drives itself. The car will speed up, slow down, brake(刹车) and drive by itself. You can take control of driving any time by turning the steering wheel or touching a pedal. The car uses sensors(感应器)to know when driveway changing is safe and whether it should speed up or slow down.
Tesla Autopilot is made for cross-country driving. It keeps you in the driveway and helps you avoid hitting other cars. It does not work well on local roads, for it will not stop at a red light or stop sign.
Reporter Carolyn Nicander Mohr tried the Autopilot feature(特点) of a Tesla earlier this month. She had a hard time trusting the car to do what it should do. She thought about canceling the Autopilot feature many times during her trip. She wanted to take control at every corner in the road and hit the brake when the car in front of her slowed down. However, the car drove perfectly itself.
Other companies like Marcedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Volvo and Toyota are all working on self-driving cars, too.
