四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、People can travel without much money by staying in other people’s house. Sometimes the travelers may sleep for a few nights on other people’s couch (沙发) for free. This way of travelling is called couch surfing.

Couch Surfing.org is an organization that connects travelers all around the world. Members of it can find a place to stay when they travel or share their homes and hometowns with travelers from other places. In this way strangers can help strangers in order to make the world a better place.

The organization has millions of members in 238 different countries and it has changed the way of travel forever. Jamie from Australia has traveled in this way all over the world. “When I travelled before, I used to find a cheap hotel to save money, now I stay in really nice houses and apartments. But the best thing isn’t the free living condition, it’s the people you meet. A couch surfing host will usually cook you a meal which helps break the ice. Then they’ll often introduce you to their friends and take you to the places they enjoy: Couch surfing allows you to experience a country and its culture.”

Why do people agree to let a stranger sleep on their couch? Delphine, an experienced host from Paris, has an answer. “They say that money makes the world go round but I try to help people go round the world without much money!” she says with a smile. So far she has received more than 100 travelers. “I enjoy meeting people from different cultures and I’ve made friends from all over the world,” says Delphine, who is also a professional cook. “And of course, I like sharing French food with them. Usually my guests love trying it but I’ve had problems sometimes. Once I cooked roast lamb for a guest but unfortunately, when she got here, she told me she was only used to eating vegetables!”

The idea of travelling the world for free has even been made into a TV series. Alex and Zsolt from the US set out with no money at all. They relied on social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter to ask for help. They say, “wherever we went we were always provided with food. All over the world, food is a common bond.” They travelled sixteen different countries and the results were turned into the TV show Around the World for Free.

  • 26、Meghan Pierce is a high school senior. Her excellent memory helped her achieve top grades. But when asked what she still remembered about her school lessons during the summer vacation, she joked, “Nothing.”

According to Pierce, she has the most trouble remembering historical facts, and brain experts say the problem is infrequency (很少) of use. Memory problems, once the worry of the elderly, have become a problem among people of all ages.

But researchers say memory can be improved. The key to achieving it is simpler than you might think—lots of practice and better organization. Can’t find your keys? Keep them in the same place every day. Forget names? Use word associations (联想). Fearful of forgetting a special activity? Tell your brain the date is important and repeat it to yourself again and again.

That doesn’t mean it is easy to improve memory because memory is influenced by many things. New research is showing that memory can become worse because of stress or injury (受伤). Young soccer players who take a lot of headings (头球) report some memory problems.

Besides, experts say, forgetting information is normal. “We function (运转) so well as human beings because in fact we forget things,” said James L. Olds. “Our brain can’t store too much information, so we need to forget something to make sure it works well.”

And forgetting over the summer doesn’t matter because the information isn’t really “lost”. It can be easily found back with review in the fall. “What students generally lose over the summer are facts not related to images or not included in a system,” said Ira B. Black.

“It is also easier to forget information that is new,” said Professor Alan S. Brown. High school student Lyndsey Wilson agreed. “I have been studying English for four years, and it is less likely to be forgotten than the Spanish which I first started learning this year.”

【1】It’s most difficult for Meghan to remember historical facts because ________.

A.she doesn’t use them quite often

B.she doesn’t listen carefully in class

C.she doesn’t have any interest in them

【2】The writer develops the main idea of Paragraph 3 by ________.

    A.making comparisons

    B.giving examples

    C.listing opinions

【3】The writer uses the example of young soccer players in Paragraph 4 to show that memory is influenced by ________.

    A.stress

    B.practice

    C.injury

    【4】According to James L. Olds, ________.

A.it’s normal for people to forget things

B.students have too many things to remember

C.it’s easy for people to forget new knowledge

  • 27、Linda Evans was my best friend—like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding.

When I was 13, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special time—like my wedding (婚礼) and Linda’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back, stamped “Address (地址) Unknown. ” I had no idea how to find Linda.

Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share (分享) happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.

One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagman — Linda’s married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans,” I thought, but I still wrote to her.

She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs Tobin!” she said excitedly, “Linda Evans Wagman is my mother. ”

Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each other’s lives. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there’s one thing that Linda and I know for sure: We won’t lose each other again!
