24、 I watched my mother flying out to get me food. My sister already flew out into the world, too. She flew just like my mother did. I didn't ever want to leave the nest. My wings were nothing like my sister’s. Mine were brown and small, and I just knew they were too weak to fly.
My mother got back and fed me. After I ate, she looked at me and said, “you're old enough now, and it is time for you to fly.”
I told her I felt bad. She said that she could wait until the next morning. But then I would have to go. I stayed close to her in the nest and tried to go to sleep.
When the sun came up the next day, I tried to look small. I knew that birds should fly away and leave the nest, but that didn't mean I could do it.
My mother asked me to watch and learn. I had watched her fly away so many times before. When I stood in the nest watching her, I was scared.
Then something happened. I fell out of the nest! I put my wings out and I was able to fly! I shouted as loudly as I could. They worked! They were strong enough to fly after all! They were wonderful. My mother flew back to the nest and watched me fly and shouted happily.

26、 "I will think of it." It is easy to say this, but do you know what great things have come from thinking? Though we can not see, or hear, or feel our thoughts, they have great power!
Isaac Newton was seated in his garden on a summer evening when he saw an apple fall from a tree. He began to think, and tried to find out why the apple fell. Then he discovered how the earth, sun, moon, and stars are kept in their places.
A boy named James Watt sat quietly by the fireside, watching the lid of the tea kettle as it moved up and down. He began to think. He wanted to find out why the steam in the kettle moved the heavy lid. From that time he went on thinking and thinking, and when he became a man, he improved the steam engine so much that it could, with the greatest ease, do the work of many horses.
James Ferguson was a poor Scotch shepherd boy. Once seeing the inside of his father's watch and he wondered, "Why should I not make a watch? But how was he to get the materials out of which to make the wheels and the mainspring(钟表等的主发条)? He soon found how to get them. He made the mainspring out of a piece whalebone. He then made a wooden clock which kept good time. He began, also, to copy pictures with a pen, and portraits(肖像)with oil colors. In a few years, while still a small boy, he earned money enough to support his father. When he became a man, he went to London to live. Some of the wisest men in England, and the king himself, used to attend his lecture. His motto was," I will think of it. "And he made his thoughts useful to himself and the world.

27、My own experiment with culture shock came to a fruitless end when I returned with homesick from a year’s study in Italy. I had never heard of culture shock. All I knew was that I was unhappy and wanted to go home.
That was twenty years ago, and since then culture shock has become a real field of study. It is now understood that any normal person, finding himself or herself for an extended time in a new culture, is in trouble.
The process of “culture shock” is now considered so predictable that its four stages have been noticeable (显而易见的). The first is the honeymoon stage. In this stage, the new country and its people seem delightful. Everything is better than home. Everything is so different and charming. For people who never stay in one place long enough to find out what follows, culture shock is nothing at all.
Then the bloom comes off the rose. Now the people start to look shallow, selfish and stupid. The different ways of doing things don’t seem interesting any more. You start to feel tired all the time. Culture shock has set in. You feel at spa. The emotional response (反应) to culture shock in stage two can be extreme (极端的). Confusion, depression, worry and anger can all enter to varying degrees. You may become physically ill. Little things seem terribly annoying.
The happier resolution is to move on to stage three. Adjusting. Rather than listing what’s “wrong” with Americans, you remind yourself that “right” and “wrong” are not meaningful terms in cultural matters. Instead, you try to understand what motivates Americans, perhaps realizing that many of the things you don’t like are related to the things you do like.
As time goes on, you should be moving into stage four. Acceptance. At this point, you simply don’t think any more about the specialties of Americans. You accept them as individuals. You have started to feel at home; you know how to do things. You have not rejected your old culture; but the American ways have settled upon you. You feel optimistic about your future here. You have truly arrived.
【1】Why don’t people suffer from culture shock when they first arrive in a foreign country?
A.They love to travel.
B.They don’t stay in one place long enough.
C.The new county and its people are delightful.
D.Everything is so different and charming.

C.Something good comes about
D.The rose comes up
【3】Which of the following statements will the writer agree with?
A.Any normal person facing a new culture will be in trouble.
B.Culture shock is now considered unpredictable.
C.There is no “sight” and “wrong” in terms of cultural matters.
D.When you reject your old culture, you can accept the new one.
【4】The passage is mainly about ________.
A.the study of culture shock
B.how to get rid of culture shock
C.the writer’s own experiment with culture shock
D.the four stages of culture shock and their features
28、 “Problems and worries are normal (正常) in life.”says Lucy. “But I think talking to someone helps a lot. If we don’t talk to someone, we’ll certainly feel【1】.”

Her dad said that he【5】made careless mistakes himself. They got her a new wallet and asked her to be more careful. “I will always remember to 【6】my problems in the future!” Lucy says.
Robert Hunt advises students about common 【7】. He feels the same way as Lucy. “It is best not to avoid our problems. We should always try to solve them.” He thinks that you can first find someone to talk to. This person doesn’t need to be an expert (专家) like himself. Students often forget that their parents have more【8】than them, and are always there to 【9】them.
In English, we say that sharing a problem is like cutting it in half. So you’re halfway to solving a problem if you talk to【10】about it.
