24、 It might seem impossible that tiny insects could be very harmful to a large house. But wood-eating termites（白蚁） can indeed do a lot of harm to a house.
Scientists believe that termites have been around for about 50 million years. Today, there are nearly 3,000 kinds of termites. They can be found all over the world.
A termite’s diet is mainly made of the fiber（纤维素） found in plants. Many termites feed on trees and wood in wooded areas. However, they don’t know the difference between the wood in a forest and the wood used to build houses. If they find wood inside a house, they will happily eat it.
It would take a single termite over 3,000 years to eat up the wood in a small house. Unluckily, termites are social insects. They live in groups. A termite group could be made up of 15 million termites or more. They eat day and night. Large termite groups can eat as much as one pound of wood in a day.
Termites can be hard to discover. Often, they’re found only after big damage has been done to a house, especially in May every year.

25、What happens when we want to do something impossible? It may seem unlikely, but it is our true nature. It may seem silly, but it is our heart’s purpose.
Once there was a strong camel. She liked dancing very much. She wanted to be a ballet (芭蕾舞) dancer. “To make every movement a thing of beauty,” said the camel, “is my dream.”

26、Know when to skim. Skimming can be used to gain a shallow （浅层的） understanding of a text. It can be used to scan a newspaper for interesting material or to get the important concepts out of a textbook in preparation for a test. It’s not a good choice for thorough reading.
Read titles and section headings. Begin by only reading the chapter titles and any subheadings at the start of large sections. Read the headlines of each newspaper article or the table of contents in a magazine.
Read the beginning and end of a section. Textbooks usually have introductions and summaries of each chapter. For other texts, just read the first and last paragraph of a chapter or an article.
You can read quickly if you’re familiar with the subject, but don’t try to speed read as fast as possible. You’re saving time by skipping most of the section, but you do need to understand what you’re reading.
Circle important words throughout the text. If you still wish to learn more, brush your eyes rapidly across the page rather than reading normally. As you know the main idea of the section, you can pick out key words that mark important areas. Stop and circle the following words:
Words that are repeated several times
The main ideas—often including words from the title or section header
Proper nouns
Italics, bold text, or underline
Words you don’t recognize
Pay attention to pictures and diagrams （ 图表）. These often present a lot a information without much reading required. Take a minute or two to make sure you fully understand each diagram.
Read the first sentence of each paragraph, if unsure. If you are uncertain about the subject, read the start of each paragraph. The first one or two sentences will teach you the main points.
Study using your annotations （ 注解）. Go back and look over the words you’ve circled. Can you “read” these and get a general sense of what the text is about? If you don’t understand a certain word, try reading a few sentences around that word to remind yourself of the topic.
