四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   It’s 2012. You feel sick, so you go to the doctor. She checks your fever, looks at your throat, and asks what you’ve been thinking about lately. When you leave, she gives you some medicine, but also a list of thinking skills that you are supposed to practice daily. She says that the way you think is causing some of your illness.

Doctors and other scientists who study the human mind and try to explain why people behave in the way that they do, called psychologists, are starting to believe it. You know that your brain is connected to every part of your body through your nervous system(神经系统). Now scientists have proved that how you think and feel can have an influence on the health of your body.

Stress(压力,紧张) is caused whenever there is a problem or a change in your life. Of course, everybody has stress more or less; nobody’s life is perfect. In fact, stress is necessary. Without stress, we would never learn anything or grow or change. We would probably be bored to death. But too much stress can hurt you. It can weaken your body’s protection so that you are more likely to catch diseases. It can even make you more likely to have an accident.

When you feel stress, your brain sends a message to your body to produce a chemical called adrenaline(肾上腺素). Adrenaline speeds up your breathing and your heart beat. Today you have a different kind of stress. Problems like endless homework or troubles with your family are the kind of things you can’t fight or run away from, so you don’t use up all that adrenaline. It just stays bottled up inside you, and that’s what can do something bad to you.

What can you do about stress? First, you can try to find ways to change things so you aren’t under so much stress. You can set up a plan to finish homework or go to a doctor or a psychologist to try to work things out with your family or your friends. But sometimes you can’t change a stressful situation. Sometimes you don’t even want to. A big change might be a good change, but it will still be stressful.

The link(关联) between your body and brain works in two ways. Your body can help your mind deal with stress. If you are under stress, you need to take especially good care of your body. It’s important to get enough sleep and eat nutritious meals. Some people take a vitamin-mineral pill every day. Another thing that you can do is daily exercise. If you go walking or do aerobic dancing or work out at the gym, you give your body a chance to burn up some of that adrenaline. Of course, a person who isn’t used to much physical activity should start slowly. Anyone with a continuing physical problem should check with a doctor before starting any exercise programs.

1A psychologist is a person who may help you with your ________.

A.illness and abilities B.thoughts and behavior

C.mind and nervous system D.physical activity and daily exercise

2Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.You shouldn’t go to the gym if you are under stress.

B.One can do his homework to burn up adrenaline.

C.Diseases and accidents are caused by stress.

D.Everyone needs stress to improve himself.

3From the last sentence of Paragraph 5 we can infer that ________.

A.it’s difficult to change a stressful situation

B.it’s not stressful when a good change takes place

C.a big change will cause another stressful situation

D.a stressful situation can’t be changed without any effort

4What is probably the best title for this passage?

    A.The Body-Brain Link. B.The Causes of Stress.

C.The Advice on Health. D.The Nervous System.

  • 25、   To achieve greater success, we must build good habits. James Clear gives advice on how to create better habits in his book, Atomic Habits.

According to James Clear, the process of building a habit can be divided into four steps:cue(提示), desire, response, and reward. The cue causes a desire, the desire produces a response and the response provides a reward. For example, a phone buzzes when a message comes in, the buzz will arouse you desire to know what's in the message, the desire attracts you to give response by grabbing the phone and then reading the message, and then you know what's in the message, which is the reward. Over time, the brain connects the cue with the reward, so you reach for the phone once it buzzes, and now the habit is formed.

James Clear also presents four fundamental laws to build good habits.

First, make it obvious. Habits are automatic because our brains pick up cues and take action without thinking. To start a new habit, you can make your cues more obvious. To become more aware of them, you can write down your habits on a habit scorecard. Your plan of good habits can be marked with specific time or location.

Second, make it attractive. Desires differ from person to person but they encourage the development of every habit. We take action only when we expect it to produce a reward. The more useful the action is, the more we'll repeat it, until it becomes a habit that we do automatically. Thus, to form good habits, we need to make them more attractive by connecting these habits with rewards and positive feelings.

Third, make it easy. The response is the action you perform. If an action requires more effort than you are willing to put in, you won't take it. It also depends on your ability. A habit can be formed only when you are able to do it. The best way to build a habit is to practice it, and the best way to start practicing is to make it easy.

Finally, make it satisfying. Give yourself a reward when you complete your habit. Rewards can not only satisfy your desire but also tell you which actions are worth keeping. Feelings of satisfaction can help your brain tell useful actions from useless ones.

The key to creating good habits is to understand these fundamental laws. Every goal is sure to fail if it goes against human nature.

1Of the following steps, which one is the "response"?

A.You grab the phone. B.You hear the phone buzz.

C.You want to know the message. D.You know what is in the message.

2According to the passage, James Clear believes that

A.to build a good habit, you can make it challenging

B.the key to creating good habits is to make them easy

C.desires are necessary for the development of good habits

D.the more rewards you are given, the faster you'll form a habit

3Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

A.The Ways of Building Good Habits B.The Influence of Good Habits on Life

C.The Reasons of Building Good Habits D.The Difficulties of Forming Good Habits

  • 27、In 2011, Kylie Dunn, a writer from Australia, decided to shake up her life. Every month for a year, she decided to try two new activities. In February 2012, for example, one of her goals was to eat less meat for 30 days. Later, she wrote a letter to a friend or relative every day for a month. In just 12 months, she changed her life in more than 20 different ways.

Dunn was inspired to try her project after watching a TED Talk by Matt Cutts. To get ideas for activities, she watched hundreds of other TED Talks. Her first activity, in November 2011, was inspired by Jessi Arrington’s talk “Wear Nothing New.” Dunn tried each activity for 30 days, and then wrote about her experiences in a blog called “My Year of TED.”

Finally, when her project was over, Dunn talked about her experiences at a TEDx conference (会议) in Hobart, Australia. Dunn’s talk in January 2014 inspired other people to change their attitudes and their lives. Before her project, Dunn says, she didn’t think she had the courage to change her life. The project showed her she had more power than she thought.

“People who watch TED Talks… end up changing their view of the future,” says Chris Anderson, the head of TED. He says that TED’s goal isn’t to make a single big change. TED’s effect is the millions of stories of small changes. Personal changes like Kylie Dunn’s are happening every day. Together, these changes have the power to change the future in a positive way. As Anderson explains, “Instead of thinking of the future as an unstoppable force… people can play a part in shaping it.”

1What was Kylie Dunn’s goal in February 2012?

    A. To start a blog.

    B. To eat less meat.

    C. To make new friends.

    D. To wear nothing new.

2What did Kylie Dunn’s project show her?

    A. She had more power than she thought.

    B. She would live better because of TED Talks.

    C. She could give good speeches on TED Talks.

    D. She could change her life by wearing new clothes.

3What is TED’s goal according to Chris Anderson?

    A. To make serious speeches.

    B. To make a single big change.

    C. To make small changes every day.

    D. To stop people’s life from changing.

4What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Jessi Arrington’s blog is called “My Year of TED”.

    B. Kylie Dunn is a head leader of TED from Australia.

    C. Dunn was inspired to try her project by Chris Anderson.

    D. Dunn shared her experiences at a TEDx conference in 2014.
