  • 25、The ocean is not a quiet place. This is partly caused by sea animals. They use sound to find what they eat, whom they play with, or which place they move towards. But noise from human activities is increasingly troubling the lives of ocean animals.

According to scientists, loud noise may increase mass strandings (大规模搁浅)of sea animals. Researchers recorded only five of these events in the first half of the 20th century. From 1950 to 2004, they recorded more than 1,200 mass strandings. This is perhaps because of the use of sonar (声呐) underwater. Another main reason of loud underwater noise is pile driving (打桩). Piles are supports for bridges, oil and gas producing areas. They’re driven deep into the floor of the ocean. Driving in a single pile can take several hours and as many as 5,000 hits. This process creates a lot of noise.

To restrain (抑制) that noise, some companies are making use of tiny bubbles (气泡). A single bubble is easily broken. However, the bubble wall can make pile driving quieter. The bubble wall is usually created in this way: A tube (管) is placed in a ring around a pile. Air is then let out through closely spaced openings on the tube. When the bubbles rise, they act as walls and take in some of the noise. Some more of the sound comes back and becomes stuck inside the wall. Such bubble walls are really helpful.

Other changes to pile driving can help as well. For example, people can take breaks in pile driving and let animals travel through.

Our noise in the ocean is causing big problems. But small changes in our behavior can make a big difference to animals’ lives in the world’s oceans.

【1】What is troubling the lives of ocean animals according to the text?

  • 26、Beijing has a large number of old trees. A survey showed that the city had about 40,000 century-old trees. Among them, more than 6,100 were over 300 years old. It’s said that the longest living tree is about 3, 000 years old, almost as old as the city itself. Nearly half of the old trees are in old streets and ancient gardens.

However, about 9,000 of the old trees are in danger because of environmental changes, natural disasters(灾害), poor management, and so on.

Last year, Beijing government started a project to protect trees that are over 100 years old. They first found two ginkgoes(银杏树)and two pagoda trees(国槐)at the foot of Beijing’s Western Hills.

Yang Shutian, director of the project, said that old trees could be seen as “living relics(遗迹)” and keeping them healthy was also part of the work to protect and carry forward the city’s history.

A group of tree experts carried out an examination of the four old trees, which were very weak and dying. The experts soon took action to save the trees. They filled holes, controlled pests and watered the trees over the next two months. The trees are now very strong. According to Yang, more old trees in the city will be protected through the project.

One night before bed, Christine Carter was sitting with her daughter in her bedroom. They were making a list: “Three Good Things of the Day”. Her daughter said, “Mom, chatting with you is one of my three good things.” Making a list was their way to think of things they were _________ for. It’s a skill in the research of happiness.

Carter is a professor at the University of California. She studies how schools and families build up positive attitudes and help kids lead _______ lives.
