24、People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I’m in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.

25、One day when some government officials were rebuilding a barn, they found a mouse hole in a corner and used smoke to let the mice inside the hole come out.A while later they indeed saw mice running out,one after another. Then, everyone thought that all the mice had escaped. But just as they began to clean up,they saw two mice squeezing out at the mouth of the hole. With some efforts, the mice finally got out. However,it was strange that after they came out of the hole, they did not run away immediately.Instead, one chased after the other near the mouth of the hole.It seemed that one was trying to bite the tail of the other.
Everyone was puzzled,so they stepped nearer to take a look. They realized that one of the mice was blind and could not see anything, and the other was trying to allow the blind mouse to bite on his tail so that he could pull the blind one with him to escape. After seeing what happened, everyone was speechless and lost in thought.During the meal time, the group of people sat down in a circle and started to chat about what happened to the two mice.
One serious American official said:"I think the relationship between those two mice was that of king and guard."The others thought for a while and said:"That was why!"A smart French said:"I think the relationship between those two mice was that of husband and wife."Again the others thought for a while, and all felt it made sense.A Japanese said:"I think the relationship between those two mice was that of mother and son."Once again the others thought for a while, and felt this was more reasonable. So they expressed agreement another time.
At that moment, one Chinese asked:"Why did those two mice have to have a certain relationship?"Suddenly, the group looked back at the Chinese and remained speechless. The American official, the French and the Japanese who had spoken earlier all lowered their heads in shame, and did not dare to answer.

26、Do American children still learn handwriting in school? In the age of the keyboard, some people seem to think handwriting lessons are on the way out. 90% of teachers say they are required to teach handwriting. But studies have yet to answer the question of how well they are teaching it. One of this year’s studies found that about three out of every four teachers say they are not prepared to teach handwriting. Some teachers are teaching handwriting by providing instruction for 10 to 15 minutes a day, and then other teachers who basically teach it for 60 to 70 minutes a day — which really for handwriting is pretty much.
Many adults remember learning that way — by copying letters over and over again. Today’s thinking is that short periods of practice are better. Many experts(专家) also think handwriting should not be taught by itself. Instead, they say it should be used as a way to get students to express ideas. After all, that is why we write.
Handwriting involves two skills. One is legibility, which means forming the letters so they can be read. The other is fluency(流畅) — writing without having to think about it. Fluency continues to develop up until high school.
But not everyone masters these skills. Teachers commonly report that about one fourth of their kids have poor handwriting. Some people might think handwriting is not important any more because of computers and voice recognition programs.
But Steve Graham at Vanderbilt says word processing is seldom done in primary school, especially in the early years. American children traditionally first learn to print, and then to write in cursive, which connects the letters. But guess what we learned from a spokeswoman for the College Board(大学委员会). More than 75 percent of students choose to print their essay(article) on the test rather than write in cursive.
【1】From Paragraph 1 we can learn .

When a new student arrived in my third grade class. I thought he would just be a common student, but this student was different. His name was Derek and he had autism(孤独症). Then one day, Derek’s mom came to our class and talked with us. She told us that Derek wasn’t just having random outbursts--he was trying to communicate.
