1、 Do you “worship” your parents?
After I came to China, I started hearing the word “xiaoshun” a lot. It is often translated into English as “filial piety”. However, I think the translation “parent worship” is easier to understand. The basic idea behind “parent worship” is that children should always listen to their parents and do everything they can to make their parents happy.
I think many Chinese people I know would agree with the idea. I guess it is a nice idea, in theory(理论上). But I also have some Chinese friends who would disagree. This is because they have had to do things they didn’t want to, just because their parents told them to_______For example, one of my good friends had to break up with her boyfriend because her parents thought he didn’t make enough money. “孝顺”似乎有时候也是不公平的。
Most kids in the US, especially teenagers, would probably disagree with “parent worship”, too. In fact, arguing with one’s parents and being rebellious (叛逆的) is common for US teens. 我经常与我的父母就家规进行争论,而且我也不总是遵守那些规矩。
I think the best way is somewhere in the middle. Most, if not all of us, love our parents and try our best to respect(尊重) them. So of course we should follow their rules and try not to stress them out (使紧张). On the other hand, parents should respect their kids as well and give them some reasonable freedom and independence.

25、Honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways?
Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees (黑猩猩), behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (猎食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, hides its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others hide their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, dig the food, and hide it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can’t trust her, either.
