  • 24、   Audio Texts Signal Rise of New Literacy

Many people read physical books or e-books, but now there is a new trendlistening to audiobooks(有声读物).

According to a recent report by the Chinese Academy of Press and PublicationCAPP, more people are choosing to listen to audiobooks these days.

To be specific, 26 percent of adults listened to audiobooks in 2018, which was 3. 2 percentage higher than that in 2017.

Young people have been the main driver in the development of audiobooks. Some 26.2 percent of teenagers listened to audiobooks in 2018, which was 3. 5 percent higher than that in 2017.  Ximalaya noted that the value of audiobook purchases made by those aged 13 to 18 in 2018 increased by 330 percent over that of 2017, the Beijing Evening News reported.

One of the reasons that audiobooks are becoming increasingly popular is that people want to get more use out of their free time, China News Service reported. Listening to e-books frees up time for them, whether they are at the gym, on a bus, or in bed. Faster internet speeds mean that a book can be downloaded in seconds, according to Wei Yushan, director of CAPP.

Listening to audiobooks also helps with loneliness.“When I feel bored or lonely, listening to audiobooks makes me feel that there is someone accompanying(陪伴)me, ”Zhong Yan, an office worker who is obsessed with audiobooks, told the Beijing Evening News.

However, audiobooks are still far from perfect.“Listening to audiobooks doesn't make you think in the way you do when you're reading a book. It's also likely that you will miss information while you listen, ”said Zhong.

Qiang Qiang, a primary student who often listens to audiobooks, shares this perspective: " Despite(即使;尽管)its convenience, audiobooks are less detailed than physical books you read, ”he told the Beijing Evening News.

Li Yini, assistant general manager of Baicaoyuan Bookstore in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, told Jiangnan Times that people who want a book with serious content should choose a paper book or e-book, but they can choose an audiobook if the content is easy to understand.

B.Audiobooks are more popular than physical books in China.

C.Ximalaya is the first choice when people listen to audiobooks.

D.About half of young people in China listened to audiobooks in 2018.

2According to the article, people like to listen to e-books because—·

A.they are more convenient B.they are cheaper than paper books

C.they are more relaxing than physical books D.they provide people with a better reading experience

3The phrase “be obsessed with" in Paragraph 6 probably means“ ___________, , .

A.be doubtful about B.be interested in

C.be careful about D.be disappointed at

4What can we learn from Li Yini's words?

A.Audiobooks are less detailed than physical books.

B.People should choose a book form based on its content.

C.People think differently when they listen to audiobooks.

D.Physical bookstores face a big challenge from audiobooks.

  • 25、At night, look up at the sky. How many stars do you see? If you live in the country, bright stars will fill the sky. If you live in the city, on the other hand, you might not see any stars. What’s happening? Bright lights from the city are lighting the sky, making the stars unseen. This is light pollution.

Light can also come into city homes, like an uninvited guest. Sometimes, a visitor to a big city can’t sleep because of the bright signs outside his or her window. Darkness helps us sleep. Without darkness, we lie awake and can’t sleep, which may lead to serious health problems.

Living things need darkness. It’s part of the natural 24-hour cycle. Trees and plants that are too close to artificial light grow in strange ways and die quickly. Animals become puzzled(困惑的) when light and dark are changed. For example, night animals might think it’s day when it’s night.

Finally, using too many lights consumes(消耗) energy and money. The huge lights for all-night parking lots are too bright and unnecessary. Every city spends millions of dollars to light its thousands of buildings and streets, and much of this lighting is just to make the city look beautiful, rather than to serve a certain purpose.

True, we feel safer in the light, but our eyes are able to see a little in darkness. And we don’t need to light the whole city just to create a beautiful night view. We should try to turn the lights off to save the earth and all the living things from light pollution.

【1】Why can’t people see many stars in the city at night?

A.The city has many high buildings.

B.The living things in the city need darkness.

C.The city spends too much money on the lights.

D.The bright lights in the city make the stars unseen.

【2】What does the underlined word “artificial” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Man-made.

    B.Medical.

    C.Weak.

    D.Wild.

【3】What result may the light pollution bring?

①People may have health problem.       ②People can not see in the darkness.

③Night animals may become puzzled.       ④It consumes much energy and money.

    A.①②③

    B.①②④

    C.①③④

    D.②③④

【4】Which question could best help us find the writer’s purpose?

A.Did the writer tell us a story?

B.Did the writer make an advertisement?

C.Did the writer want us to do something?

D.Did the writer express a kind of feeling?

【5】What’s the best title for the passage?

    A.Living Things Need Darkness

    B.Let’s Reduce Light Pollution

    C.How to Avoid Light Pollution

    D.Lights Make the City Beautiful
