四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Learning about the environment is very important. There are many good books that will help you learn. To get started, ask your teacher or a librarian for some suggestions. You can also look at some good websites with information about the environment and climate change. Climate change may be a big problem, but there are many little things we can do to make a difference.

Driving a car or using electricity is not wrong. We just have to be smart about it. Some people use less energy by carpooling. For example, four people can ride together in one car instead of driving four cars to work. Whenever we use electricity, we put greenhouse gases into the air. By turning off lights, the television and the computer when they aren’t needed, you can help a lot.

Don’t buy products that use too much energy. Some products, like certain cars, are made specially to save energy. These don’t pollute as much, either. Products like computers, TVs, and VCRs with the ENERGY STAR label (标签) R are made to save energy. Buying products with these labels will help protect the environment.

Buy recyclable products instead of (代替) non-recyclable ones. Recyclable products are usually made out of things that have already been used. It usually takes less energy to make recyclable products than to make new ones. So when you go shopping, look for the recycle mark on the package—three arrows that make a circle. The less energy we use, the better.

【1】The passage is mainly written for ___________.

    A.car producers

    B.school students

    C.parents

【2】The underlined word “carpooling” in paragraph 2 most probably means ___________.

    A.sharing a car

    B.pulling a car

    C.selling a car

【3】From the passage, we can learn that ___________.

A.turning off the electricity when it isn’t needed can save a lot of energy

B.electricity will cause great trouble to our environment

C.cars using less energy will not put greenhouse gases into the air

【4】Which of the following can be the writer’s opinion?

    A.No pains, no gains.

B.Rome was not built in one day.

C.Little things can make a big difference.

  • 25、I used to live in a small town with trees all around. It is about thirty years since I left my hometown. But I still remember what it was exactly like. And I often see it in many of my dreams. My hometown is a beautiful place. It stands beside a wide river and is rich in fish and rice.

But in the old days it was a poor and backward little town. Many people had no work. They lived a hard life. There was no tall building and the only street was narrow. But trees and flowers made the town beautiful. Just outside the town, there was a river. You could see different kinds of fish swimming in the clear water. People here lived a simple life.

Since a new policy(政策) was taken by the government, great changes have taken place there. The streets have been widened. Factories, schools, hospitals, cinemas and theatres have been built one after another. Peoples life is greatly improved. You can see tall buildings, big department stores and factories everywhere. Different kinds of cars and buses are running in the wide streets.

But with the development of the industry(工业), we have fewer trees. Air and water pollution is becoming more and more serious. And there are also other problems. We should try our best to make it richer. At the same time, we must do something to stop pollution and make our town even more beautiful.

【1】When did the writer leave his hometown?

    A. About ten years ago.

    B. About twenty years ago.

    C. About thirty years ago.

    D. About forty years ago.

【2】How was the writer’s hometown in the old days?

    A. poor but beautiful B. rich and beautiful

    C. poor but big   D. rich and developed

    【3】What is outside the town?

    A. a lake  B. a river C. a forest D. a grassland

【4】As for the changes of the town, which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

    A. The streets have been widened.

    B. More factories, schools, hospitals, cinemas and airports have been built.

    C. There are more and more cars and buses in the streets.

    D. Tall buildings, big department stores and factories have been built.

  • 26、Everyone in our neighborhood used to have a quiet life as usual. However, things have changed in recent days. We often heard strange noises every night. Everyone is worried about it. We all wonder who or what made the noises.

In the beginning, Liu Qiang, the leader of our neighborhood organized some young men to look for what was happening. However, they found nothing. This made the neighbors more nervous.

They had different ideas about it. A boy said it might be a cat because he often saw a cat running around here. But his mother thought it couldn’t be a cat. Cats couldn’t make noises so loudly. It must be a bigger animal, “Oh, I remember it. These days I find some children playing for fun. It must be the children playing tricks,” Mr. Liu said. “Could it be the windows? Someone forgets to close his or her windows. I’m not sure.” In the end, we had no choice but to call the police. The police came to our neighborhood to search a long time. To our surprise, they found out what was making the strange noises. Because of the bad weather these days, the wind was always blowing hard. Soon we didn’t feel uneasy anymore, Now our life has returned to normal.

【1】Everyone used to have a quiet life in the neighborhood.

【2】A boy found some young men playing tricks.

【3】Some people had different ideas about the strange noises.

  • 27、In 1845, a deadly disease struck Ireland, killing all the Lumper potato plants. In another place or time, the death of single crop species might not have been so important. But in Ireland, in 1845, people depended almost solely on the potato for food. The death of one species caused a terrible famine(饥荒). Now, some scientists are worried that such a famine could happen again, but on a much wider area.

Over the centuries, farmers have discovered thousands of different species of food crops. However, you won’t find many of these species in your local supermarket. To feed the seven billion people on Earth, most farmers today are growing only species of plants and farming only species of animals that are easy to produce in large numbers.

In the Philippines, there were once thousands of varieties of rice: now fewer than 100 are grown there. In China, 90% of the wheat varieties grown just a century ago have disappeared. Scientists believe that over the past century, more than half of the world’s food varieties disappeared.

One solution to this problem is to collect and store the seeds as many different plant varieties as we can before they disappear. The idea was first suggested by Russian scientist Nikolay Vavilov. In the 1920s and 1930s, he collected around 400,000 seeds from five continents. More recently, others are continuing the work he began.

In the US state of Iowa, Diane Ott Whealy wanted to protect historic plant varieties, like the seeds her great grandfather brought to the US from Germany more than a hundred years ago. She and her husband started a place called Heritage Farm, where people can store and trade seeds.

More importantly, people at Heritage Farm don’t just store the seeds, they plant them. By doing this, they are reintroducing foods into the marketplace that haven’t been grown for years. These food species are not just special in terms of appearance or taste. They also offer farmers food solutions for the future, from the past.

【1】What is this passage mainly about?

A.The fact that many food species are dying out.

B.The need to protect potatoes from disappearing.

C.The ways to increase the number of food species.

D.The ways to prevent food species from disappearing.

【2】The underlined word “solely” in Paragraph 1 is in closest meaning to __________ .

    A.immediately

    B.only

    C.rarely

    D.occasionally

【3】Why are some scientists worried that such a famine could happen again?

A.Because people depend on certain species of food crops.

B.Because the same deadly disease may attack crops again.

C.Because the world’s population is larger than that in 1845.

D.Because farmers grow the same potatoes as those in the past.

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

A.The disease spread very quickly and killed many people in Ireland.

B.Around 80 percent of the rice varieties in the Philippines have disappeared.

C.Heritage Farm is the first place in the US for people to store and trade seeds.

D.People have been storing seeds to save plant varieties for more than 150 years.

Mark Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media always praise him. But when you actually take the time to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, you find that his work is more w1 than you could ever imagine.

The novel describes a young boy named Tom sawyer growing up in a small town a2 the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and s3for treasure. Twain’s idea of childhood is magical--a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure.

More importantly, t4 the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain c5 makes fun of US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses scenes of Tom there to make fun of religion(宗教) and its old traditions.

Twain’s writing is full of these kinds of critical(批判的) points about c6and politics.

He also believed strongly in w8  right to vote in elections and gave a famous speech on the subject, c9 “Votes for Women”, in 1901.

“Tom was a great hero once more-- the pet of the old, the envy of the y10,” Twain writes in Tom Sawyer. But he could just as well be describing himself.
