40 Smart Ways to Save at the Supermarket Your caution not to fall for fake sales reminded me of when I was a stock boy at my neighborhood grocery in the 1950s. One time, we got a delivery of off-band vegetables. I priced them at ten cents a can. I don’t think we sold more than six cans -- until I put up sign that said “Special: Nine for $1.” I set them out Thursday evening, and by noon on Saturday they were gone. Edward Deckerd, Perrywille, Missouri | Trapped Inside a Glacier Reading about John All’s experience on Mount Himlung was very inspiring to me. A man with 15 broken bones and bleeding internally being able to climb up a 70-foot wall of ice and survive for 18 hours at 20,000 feet is something that I would have though to be impossible. I am 16 years old and a lifelong reader. Out of all the great content in Reader’s Digest, stories like his are the ones I enjoy the most. Sam Kieffer, Richardson, Texas |
Bill’s Last, Best Gift Track Grant’s article resonated(与……产生共鸣)deeply with me. Twelve years ago, my husband, Don, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. As his caregiver, I, too, learned to appreciate the people and things around me and not to sweat the small stuff, and in the long run, I became a much better person. Don also gave me his last, best gift of love and peace. Antia Lawrence, San Diego, California | Dishes Professional Chefs Cook in the Microwave Microwaving live lobsters in inhumane and cruel. Because lobsters feel pain, Switzerland has recently outlawed the practice of boiling them live. A similar law was passed in Italy, where it is now illegal to put lobsters on ice before cooking them. 22、Of the 8,300 million tons of virgin (原始的) plastic produced up to the end of 2015, 6,300 million tons have been discarded (丢弃). Most of that plastic waste is still with us, buried in landfills or polluting the environment. Microplastics have been found in Antarctic sea ice, in the guts of animals that live in the deepest ocean trenches and in drinking water around the world.
But what if we could wave a magic wand and remove all plastics from our lives? For the sake of the planet, it would be a tempting prospect — but we’d quickly find out just how far plastic has spread to every aspect of our existence.
In hospitals, the loss of plastic would be devastating. “Imagine trying to run a dialysis (透析) unit with no plastic”, says Sharon George, senior lecturer in environmental sustainability and green technology at Keele University in the UK. Plastic is used in gloves, tubing, blood bags, sample tubes and more.
Some everyday plastic items are also vital for protecting health. Face masks, including plastic-based surgical masks and respirators (人工呼吸器), as well as reusable cloth masks, have helped slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. “A mask that you have for COVID is related to our safety and the safety of others,” says George. “The impact of taking that away could be loss of life if you took it away on a big scale.”
Our food system would also quickly come apart. We use packaging to protect food from damage in transit and preserve it long enough to reach supermarket shelves, as well as for communication and marketing. “I cannot imagine how plastic would be replaced completely in our system,” says Eleni Iacovidou, a lecturer in environmental management at Brunel University London.
Swapping out plastic packaging would have knock-on (产生连锁反应的) environmental effects. While glass has some advantages over plastic, such as being endlessly recyclable, a one-liter glass bottle can weigh as much as 800 g compared to a 40 g plastic one. When those heavier bottles and jars need to be transported over long distances, carbon emissions grow even more.
It’s clear that replacing one material with another won’t solve all our plastic problems.

23、When I first started taking photographs of the night sky, I never thought I’d end up doing it for a living. I’d always been interested in photography. I used to drive my family and friends crazy because I was always taking photographs of them. Then one day I saw a poster of the Earth taken from outer space. Posters like that were really popular in the 1970s. I had seen lots of them, but there was something different about this one. It attracted me and it ended up changing my life!
It hasn’t always been easy though. I remember trying to take a picture of the Comet Hale-Bopp for a photography competition in 1997. I checked with the experts at the local weather station to make sure they weren’t expecting clouds or strong winds. At 3: 30 am I set the camera on a tripod(三脚架)in my garden, and then I began the countdown to 4: 00 am, when the comet was scheduled to appear. I recall thinking, “If everything goes as planned, the photo will show the comet as a line of light moving across a background of stars.” But suddenly everything was terribly wrong! At 3: 59 am, just as I was making the final adjustments, out the bushes came a streak(色条)of black heading straight for my feet, and before I knew it, the camera, the tripod and I were on the ground! The streak of black was my neighbor’s cat Tiddles out for his late-night exercise, and he had ruined the only chance I had for the next 2,000 years of taking photographs of the spectacular(壮观的)comet!
Missed photo opportunities aside, astrophotography is a great job, and it can also be an enjoyable hobby. Surprisingly enough, you don’t need any special equipment: just a 35 mm camera, a tripod and some slow-speed film. But you must remember to take care of your equipment.

24、Sending an emoji to your doctor probably isn’t something most patients think about when they’re feeling sick. However, researchers say these symbols can actually help improve communication between patients and medical staff.
Senior author Shuhan He, MD, from Massachusetts General Hospital believes the use of emojis is a great opportunity to take communication to another level. “Emojis could be particularly important in treating children with still-developing language skills, people with disabilities that affect their ability to communicate, and the many patients who speak a different language,” Dr. He says.
Researchers say that although there are around 3,500 emojis in all, there are only about 45 which have a connection to medicine. The first ones appeared in 2015, with a needle and pill. In 2017, Apple added new emojis to represent people with disabilities. Two years later, a stethoscope (听珍器), bones, teeth, and microbe emojis popped into computers and smart phones everywhere. Dr. He helped to create anatomical (解剖学的) heart and lung emojis which were introduced in 2020. He is now working to create even more medical-related emojis.
The study authors add that, in a medical emergency, time is particularly vital. Using an emoji could help doctors know what’s wrong in a jiffy. The growth of telemedicine is providing a golden opportunity for emojis to find a purpose in the health care industry. Dr. He believes communication through emojis can help patients express things like the intensity of pain or even mood changes when words fail them.
“It’s clear that emojis have become part of the global, mainstream conversation, and that medical societies need to take them seriously,” Dr. He concludes. “They should now reach agreement on the medical accuracy of these emojis, and then work to get them approved through the global standard-setting body.”
【1】Who may find it most convenient to use emojis to communicate with doctors?
A.Creative teenage children.
B.Unsociable disabled people.

A.Quickly.

B.Encourage patients to use emojis.
C.Establish uniform standards for the use of emojis.
D.Approve the use of emojis in the whole world.
