二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The remains of an ancient ape () found in Bavaria suggest that humans' ancestors began standing upright millions of years earlier than previously thought.

An international team of researchers said the fossilized skeleton (化石骨骼) of a male ape that lived in the warm and damp forests of what is now southern Germany was quite similar to modem human bones. In a paper published by the journal Nature, they concluded that the previously unknown species — named Danuvius guggenmosi — could walk on two legs but also climb like an ape.

'The findings raise fundamental questions about our previous understanding of the evolution of the great apes and humans, ' said Madelaine Boehme, who led the research.

The question of when apes could walk on two legs has fascinated scientists since Charles Darwin first argued that they were the ancestors of humans. Previous fossil records of apes with an upright move — found in Crete and Kenya — dated only as far back as 6 million years. These apes are called Toumai.

Boehme, along with researchers from Bulgaria, Canada and the United States, examined more than 15,000 bones recovered from the archaeological remains found. Among the remains they were able to piece together were primate (灵长目动物) fossils belonging to 4 individuals that lived 11.62 million years ago. The most complete, an adult male, likely stood about 1 meter tall, weighed 31 kilograms and looked similar to modern-day bonobos, a species of chimp.

Like humans, Danuvius had an S-shaped backbone to hold its body upright while standing. Unlike humans, though, it had a powerful big toe that would have allowed it to grab branches with its foot easily.

Fred Spoor, a biologist at the Natural History Museum in London, called the fossil finds 'fantastic', but said they would likely be denied or suspected by others, especially because they could challenge many existing ideas about evolution.

1Where did the scientists find the fossilized ape skeleton?

    A.Germany. B.Canada.

    C.Bulgaria. D.Kenya.

2What can we infer about Danuvius guggenmosi?

A.It was a species of chimp.

B.It lived in Crete and Kenya.

C.It could walk with a backbone.

D.It existed much earlier than Toumai.

3How does Spoor feel about the finding?

A.It is the most fantastic one.

B.It is a support to evolution.

C.It may cause lots of debate.

    D.It denies the previous ideas.

4What might be the best title for this text?

    A.Legend of Humans' Ancestors

    B.The Secrets Uncovered from Fossils

C.The Oldest Example of Upright Ape Found

D.Recent Findings against the Theory of Evolution

  • 22、An international team of researchers from Sweden and the UK have developed an innovative way of interpreting biological signals produced by our skin. Using data obtained from a Philips wrist-worn wearable sensor device that can also measure movement, the researchers’ system displays information in the form of colourful spiral graphics (螺旋图形) in real time on a smartphone, as well as a recording of data, for the wearer to interpret and reflect on.

The prototype (雏形) visualisation system, called ‘Affective Health’, was developed by experts in Human-Computer Interaction looking into how new and emerging computer technologies can be used to design engaging visualisations on smartphones.

A study group of 23 people were given the Affective Health prototype to use for a month. Importantly, the researchers purposely did not tell the participants what the devices were useful for. Instead, they gave guidelines that Affective Health could collect information relating to both physical and emotional reactions, how increased sweating increased the conductivity, and how this was represented by different colours. The participants were left to decide the best ways of using the technology.

The researchers found that this open design stage of the study led to some participants using the system as a tool to measure and help manage their stress levels. While others, including outstanding athletes, used the device to get information on their training and recovery programmes. Other uses included logging information on their lives and tracking emotions. But interestingly, few would use the technology for more than one purpose.

Although the open design phase helped reveal several different practices Affective Health prototypes could be used for, the prototype lacked some of the functions needed to make it a good tool for a specific role—such as a sports training system, or as a stress management tool. The researchers found the need for a second, more tailored step in the design process to make devices specific to particular roles.

【1】What were the participants unaware of about the prototype?

A.Its function as a measuring tool.

    B.Its reactions to physical activity.

    C.Its colourful spiral graphics.

    D.Its specified uses.

    【2】What interested the researchers?

A.People used the device quite differently.

B.Few used the device to help better themselves.

    C.Many considered the device a single-purpose tool.

D.Many purposely avoided the device’s certain functions.

【3】What can be learned about Affective Health?

A.It has a rising market share.

    B.It causes trouble for users.

    C.It lacks competitiveness.

    D.It needs improvement.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Sweat, a Mood Detector?

    B.Time to Reflect on Ourselves?

    C.Colourful Sensors Gain Popularity

D.Technologies Interpret Biodata from the Skin

  • 23、   Two women going on a journey to green their city is the best way to describe the founders of Utility, Portland's low-waste and reuse company. It started in January 2019 and opened its first retail shop in April. Its founders, Rebecca Rottman and Nadine Appenbrink, are deeply committed to sustainability and supporters of zero waste.

They started Utility as a second job for both and as a personal journey, looking for clean products that didn't come in plastic. Their goal is to reduce the amount of single-use plastics by allowing people to bring their own reusable containers when they buy environmental friendly home and personal care items.

Every week the women teamed up with local stores to sell their goods and to refill products for returning customers. Now they are operating only online for pickup or local delivery in the Portland area. It is really easy, the company said. Just shop online and choose a container. Then select pickup or delivery. The products include all-natural dish bar soap and a wide variety of plastic-free kitchen tools.

While not completely zero waste, Utility is striving to get extremely close. Appenbrink said, “We are all on a journey. And we want to be as approachable as possible. Utility is to raise awareness about this lifestyle.” They are focused on careful growth because Utility will never ship products because of the carbon footprint involved in shipping.

There are zero waste stores in other communities, like Clean Kilo in Birmingham UK, but they are real brick and mortar (实体的) buildings. Utility's concept is so simple that it can be followed almost anywhere. Zero waste markets are the way to the circular economy that is needed to stop plastic waste, reduce our carbon footprint and have a sustainable future.

【1】Why did Rebecca and Nadine found Utility?

    A.To satisfy people's basic needs.

B.To offer job chances to local people.

C.To raise money for a personal journey.

D.To promote the use of reusable containers.

【2】Which of the following does Utility focus on?

    A.Reducing their carbon footprint.

    B.Offering more home-made products.

    C.Providing low-price shipping service.

    D.Expanding their market internationally.

【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.It is a hard job to stop plastic waste.

B.It is easy to copy Utility's practice.

C.Zero waste stores should run offline.

    D.Traditional shops produce more waste.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Two women are going on an eco-travel

B.Single-use plastics are replaced in Portland

C.A community online shop helps Portland go zero waste

D.A Portland company is changing plastic into green products

  • 24、Ever since Canadian psychiatrist Michael R. Phillips, who works in China, released his report saying China’s suicide rate from 1995 to 1999 reached 0.023 percent, the country has been ranked among those with the highest suicide rates in the world. But Jing Jun, a professor of sociology in Tsinghua University, challenges that view and presents the true picture through his nationwide research.

Jing and his students took one year to set up the first national database on suicide rate to grasp the overall trend of suicides in China. They collected data from the Health Statistics Annuals of the World Health Organization (sample size 10 million), and the country’s Health Statistics Annuals (which cover 100 million people). The database covers 23 years, from 1987 to 2009. Jing calculates the suicide rate in China based on these data. Though the suicide rate was comparatively high in the early years, his study shows it has dropped in recent years, as opposed to the ascending trend in the rest of the world.

According to Jing’s calculation, China’s suicide rate had dropped to about 0.01 percent in 2004. In 2009, the figure dropped further to 0.007 percent, which is rather low compared with the global rate of 0.016 percent. Even if the “missing” suicides were added, China’s suicide rate in 2009 would still be below 0.008 percent.

Jing has found that one of the main reasons why the suicide rate has dropped was the steady and big decline in the number of suicides committed by rural women. In the early years, researchers generally agreed that the suicide rate among Chinese women was higher than among men, which is pretty rare in the rest the world. But the suicide rate among Chinese women, especially in rural areas, has declined remarkably in recent years. In fact, it is almost equal to that of Chinese men.

As a sociologist, Jing regards suicide as a social issue, and believes improvement of social policies will reduce the suicide rate even further. More people’s lives can be saved if the authorities adjust to social environment for the better, he concludes.

    【1】From Jing’s search, we can see ________.

    A. China has been ranked among those with the highest suicide rates in the world

    B. in the rest of the world suicide rate has been rising quickly in the last few years

    C. different from Michael R. Philip’s idea, the trend of suicides in China is declining

    D. the suicide rate among Chinese women is lower than that of men

【2】The data in Para. 2 is mainly to prove that ________.

    A. the result from Jing’s research is believable

    B. Jing’s research is more complicated than Michael R. Phillip’s

    C. Jing has made great efforts to make the research

    D. China’s suicide rate was comparatively low all the time

【3】Why has the suicide rate in China dropped steadily according to Jing Jun?

    A. Because the life level of Chinese people has improved a lot.

    B. Because China’s government has adopted measures to reduce the suicide rate.

    C. Because the number of Chinese women who commit suicide has declined.

    D. Because the world environment affects the suicide rate in China.

【4】In Jing’s opinion, what should be done to reduce the suicide?

    A. Pay more attention to rural women.

    B. Continue to improve social environment.

    C. Set up more mental health centers.

    D. Make policies to prevent suicides.

【5】We can infer that the text is _______.

    A. a news report

    B. a research report

    C. a description of suicides

    D. an introduction to a professor

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为 150 左右。

Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us, as honesty is always regarded as a virtue. Every time I talk about the topic, something crowds in my mind as if it had just happened.

I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him to Mijas and then take the car in a nearby garage to get it serviced. At that time, I had just passed the driving test, and I hardly had a chance to use the car, so I said yes without hesitation.

I drove my father to Mijas, promising to pick him up again at 4 PM, then I went to a nearby garage, and put the car in there. Since I had several hours to spare, I decided to go to a movie theater near the garage to see the movie. However, I was so absorbed in the plot of the movie that I forgot the time. When the last movie finished, I looked at my watch: 6 p.m. I was two hours late!

I thought my father would be very angry if he knew what I was doing. And he would never let me drive again. So I decided to make up an excuse. Then, I drove to the appointed place, my father was sitting in a corner, waiting patiently. I first apologized for being late, then told him that I wanted to get there as soon as possible, but that something was wrong with some of the main parts of the car. I would never forget the way he looked at me. “I’m very disappointed that you thought you had to lie to me, Jason.” My father looked at me again and said, “When you didn’t show up on time, I called the gas station and asked if there was anything wrong. They told me you never picked up the car. So, you see, I know there’s nothing wrong with the car at all.”

    注意:

    1. 所续写的短文词数应为150左右;

    2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已经为你写好;
