  • 21、Reflection of real culture?

Crazy Rich Asians, adapted from Singaporean-American author Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel of the same name, has become a surprisingly successful Hollywood movie and a hot topic on social media.

Without doubt, the film is a rare US film with an all-Asian actors, full of Asian elements, such as characters playing mahjong or using red decorations at a wedding. It could be said that Crazy Rich Asians reflects a new trend in Hollywood for multiculturalism(多元化). Just like fans who praised Black Panther(2018) for featuring African characters, those from Asia now have role models of their own in a Hollywood movie.

However, when we take a closer look at the film, we can see that it’s clearly produced for a Western audience. The film is about the funny story of Chinese-American professor Rachel Chu and her rich Singaporean boyfriend Nick Young and his family. According to The Paper, although the movie throws light on Asian culture, it is still a display of American values, instead of those of Asian people. It still can’t help showing the cultural traditions and lifestyle of the US. The romance story even finds its roots in Disney fairy tales. In the movie, the large houses and the fancy parties represent the lives seen in movies like The Great Gatsby (2013) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013).

“There are a lot of people who don’t relate to that…of course there will be lot of fain criticism(批评) about the fact that it doesn’t fully represent the entire population,” wrote Penelope Poulou of VOA News.

According to Psychology Today, the film is “not an accurate(准确的) description of most Asians nor is it meant to be”. So, although Crazy Rich Asians doesn’t completely break stereotypes(刻板印象) of Asian people, it’s still a small step in the right direction. And while it’s encouraging to see a movie about Asian people made for a Western audience, it’s obvious that there’s still a long way to go.

【1】What can we learn about Crazy Rich Asians?

A.It was on show in 2013.

B.It is adapted from a TV series.

    C.It stars all-Asian actors.

    D.It was shot in China.

【2】The author mentioned Black Panther mainly to ______.

A.describe the popularity of multiculturalism in the US

B.show Hollywood’s efforts in promoting multiculturalism

C.stress the differences between the two films

D.explain its influence on Crazy Rich Asians

【3】Why have some people criticized Crazy Rich Asians?

A.It fails to describe real Asian culture.

B.It doesn’t change Americans’ stereotypes of Asians.

C.It has copied from The Great Gatsby.

D.It shows too much American elements.

【4】Which word best describes the author’s attitude toward Crazy Rich Asians?

    A.Subjective.

    B.Disappointed.

    C.Objective.

    D.Doubtful.

  • 23、There are various reasons why people travel. Some tourists go to see battlefields or other historic remains. Others are looking for culture, or simply want to have their pictures taken in front of famous places. Most European tourists are looking for a sunny beach to lie on.

Northern Europeans are willing to pay a lot of money for the sun because they have so little of it. People of cities like London, Copenhagen and Amsterdam spend much of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the rest of the year in the rain. This is the reason why the Mediterranean(地中海)has always attracted them. Every summer many people travel to Mediterranean resorts(度假胜地)and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason: sun!

The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economics of Mediterranean countries. Italy's 30,000 hotels are booked without a break every summer. And 13 million people camp on French beaches, parks and roadsides. About 37 million tourists visit there yearly, or one tourist for each person living in Spain.

But there are signs that the area is getting more tourism than it can deal with. The Mediterranean is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. None of these, however, is ruining anyone's fun. Obviously, they don't go there for clean water. They allow traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They don't even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is, the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines, it's still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin, London, or Oslo.

【1】Europeans travel mostly for the reason that____________.

A.they want to see some famous historic sites

B.they wish to escape from the cold and darkness

C.they would like to take pictures in front of famous places

D.they are interested in different cultural and social customs

【2】The underlined part in paragraph 3, "one tourist for each person living in Spain" suggests___________.

A.all the 37 million people living in Spain are tourists

B.every person living in Spain has to take care of a tourist

C.there are a large number of tourists visiting Spain

D.every family in Spain is visited by a tourist every year

【3】According to the text, which of the following might ruin the tourists' fun at Mediterranean resorts and beaches?

    A.Traffic jams.

    B.Crowded buses.

    C.Polluted water.

    D.Rainy weather.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

    A.People travel for different reasons.

B.Travelling causes a lot of problems.

    C.Europeans are fond of travelling.

    D.Northern Europeans travel for "sun".

  • 24、   Are you a talkative person? Do you like chatting with your colleagues? Every day around the world, most people who go to work avoid making small talk with their colleagues once they get there.

Some put on their headphones and keep their eyes low. Others will pretend to receive an urgent message that requires an immediate, life-or-death rapid response, which prevents them from doing pretty much anything else, including the conversation made while people are heating up lunch in the office microwave or while walking from the entrance of their office building to the nearest bus stop.

If those sound familiar or if you’ve convinced yourself that avoiding small talk with colleagues is smart self-preservation and that the risk of saying something offensive or coming across as socially unskillful is not worth the reward of connecting with somebody, then there is a bad piece of newsyour false logic could be costing you a higher position at work.

Jamie Terran, a licensed career coach in New York City, said that small talk between colleagues builds rapport, which builds trust. “Rapport is the feeling that allows you to extend the deadline, or overlook smaller mistakes because it makes your colleagues to remember that we’re only human,” she added.

However, many people underestimate how much their conversation partners like them. But it’s not necessary. Imagine that after you have an awkward small talk with your colleague, do you think that the colleague you just talked with is a terrible conversationalist? No. You just feel bad about yourself. And you colleague feels the same about himself or herself.

If you’re generally anxious in social situations, Terran suggested coming up with questions or stories from which you can pull. “Whether or not you share personal information about yourself is up to you, but discussing things you truly care about always works,” she said. “Topics related to your professional field, for example, the sports you do well, is a great place to start.”

1How do most people avoid chatting with their colleagues?

A.By asking their colleagues to stay far away.

B.By getting themselves occupied on purpose.

C.By reading something unrelated to their work.

D.By devoting themselves fully to the deadlines.

2What may people lose if they avoid small talk with colleagues?

    A.Smart self-preservation. B.Trust in their colleagues.

C.Professional and social skills. D.A chance for job promotion.

3What do people worry about after an awkward chat with their colleagues?

A.Their colleagues will overwork their efforts. B.They are likely to make more big mistakes.

C.Their colleagues may think poorly of them. D.They will lose heart during the coming days.

4What does Jemie Terran strongly about making small talk?

A.Making up funny stories about others. B.Talking about something you are good at.

C.Choosing serious topics for discussion. D.Sharing private information about yourself.
