  • 21、   This booklet, prepared by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), provides an overview on depression. It will help you learn the things that everyone should know about depression.

This booklet is intended for informational purposes only and should not be considered a guide for making medical decisions. For more information on depression, please visit the NIMH website at www.nimh.nih.gov.

    1. Depression is a real illness.

Sadness is something we all experience. It is a normal reaction to difficult times in life and usually passes with a little time. When a person has depression, however, it interferes with daily life and normal functioning. Doctors call this condition “depressive disorder.” It is a real illness. Many factors may play a role in depression.

    Causes of Depression

    (1) Genetics, brain biology and chemistry

    (2) Life events such as trauma, loss of a loved one

    (3) A difficult relationship

    (4) Early childhood experience

    (5) Chronic illness, drug and alcohol abuse

    (6) Any stressful situation

    2. Depression affects people in different ways.

Not everyone who is depressed experiences every symptom. Some people experience only a few symptoms; others have many. The seriousness and frequency of symptoms, and how long they last, vary depending on the individual and the stage of the illness.

    Symptoms of Depression

    (1) Feelings of guilt, sadness, worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness

    (2) Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities

    (3) Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions

    (5) Insomnia

    (6) Appetite and/ or weight changes

    (7) Consistent fatigue and decreased energy

    3. Depression is treatable.

Depression, even the most serious cases, can be treated. The earlier treatment begins, the more effective it will be.

    Dealing With Depression

Reach out and stay connected: Make real-life communication a priority! Spend time with other people and confide in a trusted friend or relative. Let them help you.

Try to be active and exercise: Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. This does not have to be all at once. A ten-minute walk can improve your mood for two hours.

Eat a healthy and mood-boosting diet: Reduce foods that contain caffeine, alcohol, trans fats, and foods with high levels of chemical preservatives as well as sugars.

Get a daily dose of sunlight: Sunlight can help improve your mood. Whenever possible, get outside during daylight hours and expose yourself to the sun.

Challenge negative thinking: Nothing is as bad as it seems at first. Try to move your focus away from concentrating on what is bad in your life.

Find professional help: If none of the above tips help, do not wait for the symptoms to disappear. Seek professional help.

    4. You are not alone.

In addition to your treatment, you could also join a support group. At the meetings, people share experiences, feelings, information, and coping strategies for living with depression.

  • 22、   Up until a few decades ago, our expectation of the future were largely positive. Science and technology would cure all the ills of humanity, leading to lives of satisfaction and opportunity for all.

Now the utopia (乌托邦) has grown unfashionable, as we have gained deeper appreciation of the range of threats facing us, from natural disasters to deadly flu to climate change. You might even be tempted to assume that human beings have little future to look forward to.

But such negative attitude doesn’t make sense. The fossil record shows that many species have existed for millions of years- so why shouldn’t we? Take broader look at our species’ place in the universe, and it becomes clear that we have an excellent chance of surviving for tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of years.

So what does our deep future hold? Perhaps it may be easier to think about the question in long time periods than about the more immediate future. The potential evolution of today’s technology, and its social consequences, is astonishingly complicated, and it’s’ perhaps best left to science fiction writers and futurologists (未来学家) to explore the many possibilities we can merely imagine. That’s one reason why we have launched Arc, a new publication dedicated to the near future.

But take a longer view and there is a surprising amount that we can say with considerable assurance. As so often, the past holds the key to the future: we have now identified enough of the long-term patterns shaping the history of the planet, and our species, to make evidence-based forecasts about the situations in which our future generations will find themselves.

This makes the negative predictions of our future seem more likely to be temporary and unreliable. To be sure, the future is not all rosy. But we are now knowledgeable enough to reduce many of the risks that threatened the existence of earlier humans, and to prevent the lot of those to come.

1What used to inspire our expectation of the future?

A.Our desire for lives of satisfaction.

B.Our faith in science and technology.

    C.Our awareness of potential risks.

    D.Our belief in equal opportunity.

2Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 4?

A.Are limits the range of futurological studies.

B.Technology offers solutions to social problem.

C.The interest in science fiction is on the rise.

D.Our near future is comparatively hard to predict.

  • 23、Kong Zi, also called Confucius (551-479B. C. ), and Socrates (苏格拉底) (469-399 B. C. ) lived only a hundred years apart, and during their lifetimes there was no contact between China and Greece, but it is interesting to look at how the world that each of these great philosophers came from shaped their ideas, and how these ideas in turn, shaped their societies.

Neither philosopher lived in times of peace, though there were more wars in Greece than in China. The Chinese states were very large and feudal, while the Greek city-states were small and urban. The urban environment in which Socrates lived allowed him to be more radical (激进的) than Confucius. Unlike Confucius, Socrates was not asked by rulers how to govern effectively. Thus, Socrates was able to be more idealistic, focusing on issues like freedom, and knowledge for its own sake. Confucius, on the other hand, advised those in government service, and many of his students went out to government service.

Confucius suggested the Golden Rule as a principle for the conduct of life: “Do not do to others what you would not want others to do to you.” He assumed that all men were equal at birth, though some had more potential than others, and that it was knowledge that set men apart. Socrates focused on the individual, and thought that the greatest purpose of man was to seek wisdom. But like Confucius, he also believed that the superior class should rule the inferior (下层的) classes.

For Socrates, the family was of no importance, and the community of little concern. For Confucius, however, the family was the centre of the society, with family relations considered much more important than political relations.

Both men are respected much more today than they were in their lifetimes.

【1】Which of the following is TURE according to the first paragraph?

A.Socrates and Confucius had much in common.

B.Confucius had much influence on Socrates’ ideas.

C.There were cultural exchanges between China and Greece.

D.The societies were influenced by the philosophers’ ideas.

【2】Socrates shared with Confucius the idea that ________.

A.all men were equal when they were born

B.the lower class should be ruled by the upper class

C.the purpose of man was to seek freedom and wisdom

D.do not do to others what you would not want others to do to you

【3】What made some people different from others according to Confucius?

    A.Knowledge.

    B.Potential.

    C.Family.

    D.Community.

【4】This passage is organized in the pattern of ________.

    A.time and events

    B.comparison and contrast

    C.cause and effect

    D.definition and classification

  • 24、The Statue of Liberty is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom. It was extremely generous of the people of France to give it to the American people, especially as the money was raised by donations from the public who recognized what the countries had in common. After all, both nations had fought revolutions to secure their nationhood.

Nowadays, it seems as though the gift has been returned with interest with the foundation of Euro Disney near Paris. Nevertheless, many French people feel it symbolizes a kind of “cultural colonialism”. To tell the truth, I would not welcome the presence of such a theme park in the middle of England, for the same reason. Mind you, neither England nor France has ever been afraid to export their own culture and values.

Anyway, it is not difficult to understand why they chose to build Euro Disney near Paris. It is a geographically logical site, in the centre of continental Europe, right by the capital city with its own attractions and so on. All the same, was it a culturally logical decision? There is the issue of “cultural colonialism” which I have already mentioned. What’s more, do the French need Mickey Mouse when they have their own cartoon hero in the form of the brave little Gaul, Asterix? Euro Disney’s rival the Parc Asterix has proved a popular destination for families wanting a day out. By the way, Parc Asterix is an easy drive from Paris too. Millions of dollars have been poured into Euro Disney to provide a top class attraction but the thing is, can visitors expect an authentic American welcome? The answer must surely be “no”! There again, Euro Disney is a cheaper option for most Europeans than going all the way to the States.

All in all I would rather create theme parks which celebrated my own heroes than accept those from elsewhere. In a word, this is because it is not always possible to transport culture—like some wines they do not travel well. In the future I will take my family to Florida to Disney World and the Magic Kingdom.

However, until that day arrives we won't be going to Euro Disney. There is a time and place for everything.

【1】As for Euro Disney, many French people________.

    A.are unhappy with it

    B.show no interest in it

    C.treat it with extreme caution

D.think it a reward for the Statue of Liberty

【2】The underlined word “rival” in paragraph 3 means________.

    A.partner

    B.competitor

    C.neighbor

    D.customer

【3】Which of the following is the author’s opinion?

A.Euro Disney can’t provide real American service.

B.Parc Asterix is more expensive than Euro Disney.

C.Theme parks should accept popular heroes.

D.American culture isn’t popular around the world.

【4】What can be the best title of the passage?

    A.The Development of Euro Disney

    B.French’s Argument against Euro Disney

    C.The Popularity of Euro Disney

    D.French’s Disagreement about American Culture
