21、 Science Advances published a new research report, saying bees are capable of addition and subtraction (减法)in Arithmetic(算术) learning—using colors in the place of plus and minus symbols.
It isn’t unusual to see the ability to count—or at least distinguish between differing quantities in the animal kingdom—Such ability has been seen in frogs, spiders, and even fish. But solving equations (方程式) using symbols is rare, so far only achieved by famously brainy animals such as chimpanzees. The previous research says the social insects, ants, can count to four and understand the concept of zero and researchers wanted to test the limits of what their tiny brains can do.
The experiment goes like this. Scientists trained 14 bees to link the colors blue and yellow to addition and subtraction, respectively. They put the bees at the entrance of a Y-shaped maze (迷 宫), where they were shown several shapes in either yellow or blue. If the shapes were blue, bees got a reward if they went to the end of the maze with one more blue shape (the other end had one less blue shape); if the shapes were yellow, they got a reward if they went to the end of the maze with one less yellow shape.
The testing worked the same way: Bees that “subtracted” one shape when they saw yellow, or “added” one shape when they saw blue were considered to have aced the test. The bees got the right answer 63% to 72% of the time, depending on the type of equation and the direction of the right answer—much better than random guesses would allow.
While the results came from just 14 bees, researchers say the advance is exciting. If a brain about 20,000 times smaller than ours can perform maths using symbols, it could pave the way to novel methods in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Just don’t ask the bees to do your homework anytime soon.

22、 A medical capsule robot is a small, often pill-sized device that can do planned movement inside the body after being swallowed or surgically inserted. Most models use wireless electronics or magnets or a combination of the two to control the movement of the capsule. Such devices have been equipped with cameras to allow observation and diagnosis, with sensors that “feel,” and even with mechanical needles that administer drugs.
But in practice, Biomechatronics engineer Pietro Valdastri has found that developing capsule models from scratch (从头开始) is costly, time-consuming and requires advanced skills. “The problem was we had to do them from scratch every time,” said Valdastri in an interview. “And other research groups were redeveloping those same modules from scratch, which didn’t make sense.”
Since most of the capsules have the same parts of components: a microprocessor, communication submodules, an energy source, sensors, and actuators (致动器), Valdastri and his team made the modular platform in which the pieces work in concert and can be interchanged with ease. They also developed a flexible board on which the component parts are snapped in like Legos. The board can be folded to fit the body of the capsule, down to about 14 mm. Additionally, they compiled (编译) a library of components that designers could choose from, enabling hundreds of different combinations. They arranged it all in a free online system. Designers can take the available designs or adapt them to their specific needs.
“Instead of redeveloping all the modules from scratch, people with limited technological experience can use our modules to build their own capsule robots in clinical use and focus on their innovation,” Valdastri said.
Now, the team has designed a capsule equipped with a surgical clip to stop internal bleeding. Researchers at Scotland’s Royal Infirmary of Edinburg have also expressed interest in using the system to make a crawling capsule that takes images of the colon(结肠). One research group, led by professors at the Institute of Digestive Disease of the Chinese University of HongKong, is making a swimming capsule equipped with a camera that pushes itself through the stomach.
One limitation of Valdastri’s system is that it’s only for designing models. Researchers can confirm their hypotheses (假设) and do first design using the platform, but will need to move to a custom approach to develop their capsules further and make them practical for clinical use.
【1】According to the passage, Valdastri and his team created the platform to ________.

【3】What can be learnt from the passage?
A.Valdastri’s system can’t provide a complete capsule creation.
B.The modular platform is more useful than a custom approach.
C.The capsules can move in human’s body automatically.
D.It costs more to module the capsules on the board.
23、Five eggs the size of Ping-Pong balls crack open as the tiny desert tortoises inside break through the shells. The two-inch-long babies immediately crawl off in search of flowers and grasses to eat. These animals may be newly hatched, but they already have survival skills that will allow them to thrive in their severe and hot habitats.
Desert tortoise live in the deserts of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. During the summer, ground temperatures in parts of their range can hit 140oF. To beat the heat, desert tortoises use their strong forearms and tough nails to dig underground holes where they can hide from the sun. some of these tortoise tunnels are up to 32 feet in length. And the holes can get pretty crowded. As many as 25 desert tortoises might stay together in one shelter.
The animals also dig grooves(沟)into the ground’s surface to catch rainwater. After a storm, they’ll return to these holes to drink the water that’s collected inside. Once it has had a good drink, a desert tortoise can go up to a year without requiring fresh water again. The tortoise stores the water it has consumed in its bladder and can later absorb the liquid when it needs to hydrate.
Despite sometimes hanging out in holes together, desert tortoises are pretty solitary. And sometimes when males come across each other, they’ll fight to establish governance. The fighting tortoises may use horns(角)on their chests to try and knock each other over. The contest ends when one animal turns over the other on its back. The losing tortoise can turn right side up by wiggling(摆动)its body back and forth until it flips(翻转)over. But after that, the tortoise knows who’s the boss.
【1】What do the desert tortoises’ babies mainly eat?
A. Insects
B. Small animals
C. Their mother’s milk
D. Flowers and grasses
【2】The underlined word “thrive” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “________”.

24、Brownie and Spotty were neighbor dogs who met every day to play together. Like pairs of dogs in most any neighborhood, these two loved each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their houses.
One evening, Brownie’s family noticed that Brownie hadn’t returned home. They went looking for him with no success. Brownie didn’t show up the next day, and, despite their efforts to find him, by the next week he was still missing.
For several days, Spotty showed up at Brownie’s house alone, barking, crying and generally pestering (纠缠) Brownie’s family. Busy with their own lives, they just ignored the nervous little neighbor dog.
Finally, one morning Spotty refused to take “no” for an answer, keeping bothering Ted, Brownie’s owner. Spotty followed Ted about, barking insistently, then darting toward a nearby empty lot and back, as if to say, “Follow me! It’s urgent!”
Eventually, Ted followed the anxious Spotty across the empty ground as Spotty stopped to run back and bark encouragingly. The little dog led the man under a tree, past clumps of trees, to a desert place a half mile from the house. There Ted found his beloved Brownie alive, lying in the bottom of a deep hole with one of his hind leg injured. Then Ted noticed something quite remarkable. Spotty had done more than simply led Brownie’s human owner to his trapped friend. In a circle around the injured dog. Ted found plenty of dog food and realized that Spotty had been feeding Brownie that week!
Spotty had been visiting Brownie regularly, in a single minded quest to keep his friend alive by giving up his own comfort. Spotty had evidently stayed with Brownie to protect him from being killed, sleeping next to him at night to keep him warm and comforting him to keep his spirits up.
【1】Why did Spotty bark toward Brownie’s family?

D.Spotty gave up his own comfort to save Brownie.
【4】Which may be the best title of the text?
A.Every dog has its day
B.Better late than never
C.A friend in need is a friend indeed

25、 Working on holidays has always presented something of a class divide. From the 1870s through the 1920s, middle-and-upper-class Americans often lived with “the help”—mostly women of color whose job was to cook and clean and care for others, day and night. While shows like Dowton Abbey seek to give ________ to servants, they also sanitize (粉饰) what was a cruel, back-breaking existence. It was common for a housemaid’s day to begin well before the family rose and extend until after they ________ for the evening. They did so seven days a week: working more than 80 hours a week - more than the 65 hours most factory workers worked at the time. While we often imagine that these women were young and single, Evelyn Nakano Gleen’s research on such care providers has shown that over 30% of them were married many with children. As they worked very hard for families not ________, they left their children, parents, siblings and husbands behind. Thanksgiving or Christmas was no doubt one of the hardest times of the year, and their own families felt their ________.
The labor movement was ________ to changing this sorry state of affairs. Unions raised wages, lowered hours, instituted worker protections, guaranteed a minimum wage and ________ holidays off for workers. Those who did have to work on national holidays were guaranteed overtime pay. When unions were strong, such benefits even ________ to non-unionized workers.
But as unions have ________, part-time work has increased. And this has meant lower wages and greater ________. Working at $11 an hour for 25 hours a week means making 14,300 a year. For most retail workers, that’s one of the better jobs that are available. And ________, it’s a job without health insurance, or a retirement plan, with constant scheduling changes that make it hard to take additional ________. Most of these workers wish they could work more, but employers would rather hire other part-timers. So when the boss says, “Can you work Thanksgiving?” workers have no real choice but to be ________.
Today, working on holidays carries no guarantee of extra pay, and not working can mean losing one’s job. Some workers are ________; Walmart employees have planned over 1,000 Black Friday strikes because of unchanging wages and health care premiums (保险费) that will soon triple. Americans have a choice of helping these workers regain the ________, or walking past them in order to shop more. And that is the irony to the trend of stores opening on Thanksgiving. On the same day that we give thanks for all we have, why must we also rush out to buy more? Observers might say, “It’s just the logic of the market!” But the logic of the market is not some mystical process. It is the result of the ________ that we make.
