  • 21、Things changed for Ben Southall when the Australian state of Queensland advertised a job for someone to look after Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef. They knew it sounded like the best job in the world, but they were surprised when over 35, 000 people applied for the job. Then they had to make a difficult decision—which person to choose from so many candidates? After a lot of testing and interviewing, they announced 34-year-old Ben Southall from England as the winner. Ben now works for the Queensland Tourist Board and his job is to look after the island and to promote tourism there. Because of the unique nature of the job, the Tourist Board wanted a unique person, with a range of skills and qualities. It was a long interview process, involving a variety of tasks to find out about each candidate.

Fitness was very important; swimming ability was particularly essential. Ben can swim very well and he also likes running, climbing, diving and mountain biking. It is clear that, physically, he can do almost anything. The ability to communicate was as important as fitness. For the last part of interview process, the final sixteen candidates did various tests and tasks, including talking to TV and radio reporters. The competition was tough and the candidates needed to show what they could do. The interviewers were interested in how the candidates performed in the tasks, how they handled the press attention and their ability to write about their adventures in a daily log. The candidates did their best to impress the interviewers and they knew they couldn't make any mistakes at this final stage.

Before he went, Ben was confident about his abilities to handle the challenge. He couldn’t do everything they asked him in the interview, as he can’t speak any other language but he felt that his other skills and his personality were impressive. He made a huge effort during the interview process and he was able to convince the interviewers that he was the best person for the job. Even so, he says he was amazed when he got the job; he couldn’t believe it! He hopes to do a good job and promote the island successfully: he has to get to know every part of the island and tell the world about it in numerous media interviews. When you read Ben's blogs from his interview tasks, it is easy to see why they chose him. He is funny and easy-going and he will certainly get the attention of any potential tourist to this beautiful place.

【1】According to the passage, Ben’s job includes the following EXCEPT ________.

A.drawing travellers' attention to the island.

B.going to Hamilton Island once a day.

    C.being interviewed in different media.

    D.knowing Hamilton Island very well.

【2】During the interview process, the candidates were asked to ________.

    A.go through a fitness training.

B.take part in various TV shows.

    C.write about their own interviewers.

    D.communicate with the press.

【3】Why was Ben chosen for the job?

A.He used to be a swimming champion.

B.He kept his personal blog very well.

C.He is easy to get along with.

D.He can speak several foreign languages.

【4】Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

    A.Hamilton Island gets well protected.

B.The funniest job in the world.

    C.Ben gets dream job.

    D.Tourism in Australia.

  • 22、Will it matter if you don’t take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.

Opposite to what many people believe, if you don’t eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

【1】During the test, those who were tested were given ________.

    A.no breakfast at all

    B.very rich breakfast

    C.little food for breakfast

    D.different breakfast or none

【2】The results of the test show that ________.

A.breakfast has great effect on work and studies

B.breakfast has little to do with a person’s work

C.a person will work better if he has a simple breakfast

D.those working with brains should have much for breakfast

【3】The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don’t eat breakfast, you will_________.

    A.lose weight

    B.not lose weight

    C.be healthier

    D.gain a lot of weight

【4】Which of the following is not true according to the passage?

A.Poor breakfasts affect those who work with brains.

B.Reducing lunch and supper is of less value in weight losing.

C.Morning diet may cause one to get fatter.

D.Eating less in lunch and supper may help to lose weight.

  • 23、   Offshore wind turbines (风力发电机) could generate enough electricity to power every home and business on Earth, according to a new report published by the International Energy Agency (IEA). The IEA describes the results as the "most comprehensive global study" of offshore wind.

Fatih Birol, executive director of the IEA, said that offshore wind has the potential to join oil, gas and solar power as energy sources that have enjoyed a boom in production following a sharp fall in costs. "Offshore wind currently provides just 0.3% of global power generation, but its potential is vast," Birol said. "More and more of that potential is coming within reach, but much work remains to be done by governments and industry for it to become a mainstay." Increased government support and new investment would help unlock new technology, including floating platforms that would allow turbines to be located much further out to sea.

The report says that developing well-equipped wind sites located close to shore would supply more than the total amount of electricity consumed worldwide today. The maximum potential for offshore wind production is more than 120,000 gigawatts (千兆瓦) , or 11 times projected global electricity demand in 2040, although that estimate does not factor in difficulties in transmitting and storing the power generated.

Wind power will be able to satisfy increasing demand for clean power to reduce the carbon use, according to the IEA. In the European Union, for example, offshore wind capacity is set to be the region's largest source of electricity in the 2040s. Its growth is expected to far outpace the increase in electricity demand, allowing surplus wind power to be used to produce hydrogen () , which in turn could reduce carbon use in transportation and building.

Chinese government policies designed to meet sustainable energy goals will help the country overtake the United Kingdom as having the largest offshore wind fleet by 2025. The push will see China's offshore wind capacity rise from 4 gigawatts in 2019 to 110 gigawatts by 2040. Other countries with a large number of coastal urban centers are also set to benefit, said the IEA.

1Which of the following statements may be agreed by Fatih Birol?

A.Offshore wind has its potential within reach.

B.Offshore wind can lead to a sharp fall in costs.

C.Offshore wind has enjoyed a boom in production.

D.Offshore wind power will for sure become a mainstay.

2What does the underlined word surplus in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Spare. B.Enough. C.Limited. D.Abundant.

3What can we infer from this text?

A.China will meet its sustainable energy goals in 2025.

B.Wind power will reduce the carbon use in the world.

C.Offshore wind will be the largest source of power in 2040.

D.The maximum potential mentioned cant be fully achieved.

4What is the main idea of this text?

A.Wind power will become a new trend.

B.A clean power has been found by IEA.

C.Offshore wind could power the world.

D.IEA published a report on offshore wind.

  • 24、As the effects of climate change become more disastrous, well-known research institutions and government agencies are focusing new money and attention on an idea: artificially cooling the planet, in the hopes of buying humanity more time to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

That strategy, called solar climate intervention (干预) or solar geoengineering, involves reflecting more of the sun’s energy back into space — abruptly reducing global temperatures in a way that imitates the effects of ash clouds flowing out from the volcanic eruptions. The idea has been considered as a dangerous and fancied solution, one that would encourage people to keep burning fossil fuels while exposing the planet to unexpected and potentially threatening side effects, producing more destructive hurricanes, wildfires floods and other disasters.

But. as global warming continues, producing more destructive hurricanes, wildfires floods and other disasters, some researchers and policy experts say that concerns about geoengineering should be outweighed by the imperative to better understand it, in case the consequence of climate change become so terrible that the world can’t wait for better solutions.

One way to cool the earth is by injecting aerosols (气溶胶) into the upper layer of the atmosphere. where those particles reflect sunlight away from the earth. That process works, according to Douglas MacMartin, a researcher at Cornell University.

“We know with 100% certainty that we can cool the planet,” he said in an interview. What’s still unclear, he added, is what happens next. Temperature, MacMartin said, is an indicator for a lot of climate effects. “What does it do to the strength of hurricanes?” he asked, “What does it do to agriculture production? What does it do to the risk of forest fires?”

Another institution funded by the National Science Foundation will analyze hundreds of simulations of aerosol injection, testing the effects on weather extremes around the world. One goal of the research is to look for a sweet spot: the amount of artificial cooling that can reduce extreme weather events without causing broader changes in regional rainfall patterns or similar impacts.

【1】Why do researchers and government agencies work on cooling the earth?

    A.To prevent natural disasters.

B.To win more time to reduce gas emissions.

    C.To imitate volcanic eruptions.

D.To encourage more people to bur fossil fuels.

【2】What are researchers worried about in terms of global warming?

    A.More volcanoes will throw out.

B.More solar energy will go into space.

C.More disasters will endanger the future of the world.

D.People will keep burning fossil fuels to keep warm.

【3】What can be inferred from Douglas’ words in an interview?

A.He thinks more research remains to be done.

B.He is optimistic about the effect of cooling the earth.

C.He is concerned about the reduction in agriculture production.

D.He disapproves of the practice of solar climate intervention.

【4】What does the underlined words “sweet spot” in the last paragraph mean?

A.The rainfall pattern of a region.

    B.The modest drop in temperature.

C.The number of extreme weather events.

    D.The injection amount of aerosol.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、The Belfast, Maine of my youth was not the coastal tourist village that it is today. At the time, McDonald’s hadn’t yet moved into town. Before the supermarket existed, Cottle’s, a food market where Mr. Proulx worked as the manager, was the only place where my mother could do her once-a-week shopping. Because we lived a few miles from Belfast, we’d usually combine the grocery trip with a visit to see my grandmother who always had cookies ready for us.

On one particular shopping day at Cottle’s, I stood behind my mother as she was unloading the grocery cart (购物车) and checking her items out at the register. The candy that displayed on either side of me were full of Life Savers, Clark Bars, Sugar Babies—you name it!

“Can I get some candies?” I asked. My mother rarely veered (转向) from her list so I wasn’t surprised with her response “No.” But I really wanted that candy!

I reached for a Sugar Baby package. My mother didn’t notice. So I thought she probably wouldn’t notice if I put them into my pocket. No one noticed my action—not my mother, not the cashier—no one! I did it! Wow! My very first shoplifting experience! How easy! How rewarding! Got my candy and didn’t need one penny to get it!

I sat in the back seat as my mother drove across the bridge to where my grandmother lived. Slowly, so as not to make any unnecessary noise, I opened my prize and carefully slipped a Sugar Baby into my mouth. No one piece of candy ever tasted so good!

Finally we pulled into my grandmother’s driveway. As I prepared to open my car door, I confidently slipped a few more Sugar Babies into my mouth.

“Keith, what have you got in your mouth?” I looked up at the rearview mirror (后视镜) and could see my mother’s eyes staring back at me. “I asked you a question! What have you got in your mouth?”

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

“Uhhh ... just some Sugar Babies,” I replied, still not skilled in telling lies.
