二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、How we garden

Some of us are challenged when it comes to gardening. We sometimes worry too much about what other people think about our gardens. The most important thing to remember when you’re creating your own garden is that it really needs to be about you. 【1】

That said, the best gardens work well with their surrounding environment. For instance, you might want to create a tropical (热带) feel but if you’ve got next-door’s oak tree (橡树) as the major background then it could look slightly odd. 【2】 If your garden is north-facing and you use black or grey-colored material, everything could become dark and depressing.

When it comes to planting, there are a lot of great influences out there. You might like the work of designers such as Piet Oudolf. But it’s good to remember that these influences are best used as a guide. 【3】 If you want to use ideas from other garden designers, then look for one that you’re comfortable with but don’t try to copy it outright—just be inspired by them.

【4】 I always think that if you’ve got fewer materials then the plants can sing better. For me, the plants are always at the heart of the garden. If you want them to stand out, keep your materials to as small a number as possible.

It’s the same when we select plants. We often forget that we don’t need a garden full of stars; we also need plants that provide the support act. 【5】 They often bring a more subtle element to the design.

A.A straight copy is never going to work, is it?

B.Grasses are a great example of this sort of secondary role.

C.All of these considerations will really help you set the tone.

D.You shouldn’t concern yourself with what anyone else thinks.

E.The direction your garden faces will also affect the overall look.

F.In the use of different materials in your garden design, less is definitely more.

G.If you want to keep bugs away from your plants, you can spray pesticide regularly.

  • 22、Working on a farm and taking care of crops can be difficult. Engineers have long wanted to build robots to lighten the load. But it has proved a difficult task. Robots that walk or roll along the ground can step on the easily damaged plants heavily. And they have to stop working when it rains. “Tarzan”, however, could deal with some of those challenges.

Jonathan Rogers is a robotics expert at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. When it comes to a farm environment, he realized robots would face many problems. “Many robots tend to get stuck,” he says, “It's very hard to leave them out for long periods without a human helping them.”

What if the robot could move above the crops? Jonathan Rogers says. Then his team set out to design a robot that could swing hand to hand along wires hung above the field. He named their invention Tarzan after the jungle-swinging character in a movie.

Mark Spong, a robotics researcher at the University of Texas at Dallas says that he admires Tarzan for its using swinging movement to save energy and the idea of building a wire structure to move around above crops.

Rogers first predicted that Tarzan could help farmers monitor crops with sensors and cameras. But he also said future robots might take water to a particularly thirsty plant. And adding a third “hand” could allow such a robot to harvest fruits and vegetables. Finally the robot could move off the farm and into the city, helping deal with the traffic and security.

【1】What worried the engineers when they built the farm robots?

A.They took up too much space.

B.They made the farming process slow.

C.They had difficulty exploring in fields.

D.They caused certain damage to crops.

【2】What does Jonathan Rogers think about most farm robots?

A.They take much time to make.

B.They get out of date more easily.

C.They depend too much on people.

D.They get used to the environment slowly.

【3】What attracts Mark Spong most about Tarzan?

    A.Its strong wings.

    B.Its low cost.

    C.Its creative design.

    D.Its powerful engine.

【4】How did Jonathan Rogers feel about Tarzan’s future?

    A.It could be found everywhere.

B.It could be put into more practical uses.

C.It could be used to do all the farm work.

D.It could be popular with working people in cities.

  • 23、Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.

Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. “It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.

In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.

Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the 30-year-old man.

Richardson describes traveling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything”. He said, “The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I’m dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”

The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said, “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”

【1】Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?

    A.  Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.

    B.  It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.

    C.  It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.

    D.  Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.

2Traveling alone is challenging because ________.

    A.  you have to make things on your own

    B.  it is hard for you to prove yourself to others

    C.  you can only depend on yourself whatever happens

    D.  it will finally build your character

3What can we infer about Chris Richardson?

    A.  He started traveling alone at an early age.

    B.  He was once shot in the arm.

    C.  He used to work as a salesman.

    D.  His website inspires others a lot.

4What is the best title for the passage?

    A.  Travel Abroad  B.  Travel Alone

    C.  Travel Light   D.  Travel Wide and Far

  • 24、If he’d survived his sudden illness in 1990, Jim Henson might be turning 79 years old on September 24, 2015. He would probably still be at work. We can only guess where his imagination would have taken him — and us — in the 25 years we missed. There’s no doubt that he would have broken new ground, for Henson was a neverstopping innovator (创新者).

His long career began far back in 1955, when he created Sam and Friends for a Washington D.C. television station. The programmes were just five minutes long and scheduled in the noman’sland between afternoon and evening programming. Yet the show won an Emmy for best local entertainment programme in 1958.

When it ended in 1961, Henson struggled to find work. He could only get brief appearances on other programmes like The Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live.  Only in 1976 did a British producer finally give Henson the green light to start a fullscale television show. The Muppet Show was produced and broadcast in Great Britain before finally arriving on prime time (黄金时间) US television. The network continued to identify it as a children’s programme, though the programme won a wide following of adult viewers.

One reason for its appeal to grownups was the obvious skill in catching the imagination. Henson’s talent was so great that it’s difficult to think of Kermit or Miss Piggy as nothing more than piles of cloth when they aren’t being operated. But Henson himself never forgot how much work went into creating his characters.

Way back in his early days, Henson created Kermit the Frog. His body was made from a green coat his mother had thrown away and his eyes were two halves of a pingpong ball. Over the years, his shape became more expressive. “Kermit is the character through whose eyes the audience is viewing the show. He’s a nice guy,” Henson said.

1Which of the following programmes marked the start of Jim Henson’s career?

    A. The Tonight Show.   B. Sam and Friends.

    C. Saturday Night Live.   D. The Muppet Show.

2It can be inferred from the passage that Miss Piggy was ________.

    A. a character Jim Henson created

    B. Jim Henson’s close friend

    C. a television programme

    D. Kermit’s girlfriend

3From the passage, we can infer that ________.

    A. it was easy for Jim to create his characters

    B. Jim Henson died of illness at the age of 54

    C. the Muppet Show was broadcast in the US first

    D. the programme Sam and Friends was not popular locally
