二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、My son was entering Grade 1. He was a bit nervous because he knew his best friend would not be in his new class. I explained to him that even though his best friend would not be in his class, he would still have some of his old classmates. On the first day of school when the class list was posted, I was shocked! My son had zero former classmates in his class. None. Not one.

    How could this happen?

I asked my friend who works with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. She explained, “Many largely populated schools often shuffle(弄混)the kids around each year to encourage new friendships.”

If schools are actively trying to place two best friends in different classes simply to shake things up, think it is a blunder.

I was lucky enough to attend the same primary school all the way through. It was a small class and our group of students moved through each grade together, We felt like brothers and sisters. It was wonderful.

While it may be good to shake things up a bit in the older grades, it seems almost cruel(残忍的) to separate good friends in the younger grades without good cause. One mom named Karen says that her son is always starting a new grade without any close friends. At first, she thought it was a good idea. Then she realized one thing---her son does not have a “best friend,” which makes her pretty worried. In fact, she thinks that he does not have any close friends because his classmates are always changing.

Part of a school’s responsibility is to provide a safe and comfortable space for children to learn and grow. If that environment is always changing---causing terrible results---perhaps it is time to rethink this practice.

  • 22、   Portland, Oregon, just got another reason to call itself “Bike City USA”.

UPS has started a trial program to deliver packages there using an electric-powered bicycle. The environmentally friendly Cargo Cruiser is a tricycle with a large brown box on the back. Like any electronic bike, the Cargo Cruiser can be powered by foot, motor, or a combination of both.

UPS began testing e-Bikes in Hamburg, Germany, in 2012, but this is the first time the technology has been used for package deliveries in the United States.

The e-Bikes support UPS’s efforts to reduce its carbon emissions, ease urban noise levels, and improve air quality. The amount of energy to be saved by using e-Bikes hasn’t been quantified, but the test vehicle in Portland “will probably displace about two gallons of fuel every day”, said Scott Phillippi, UPS’s engineering manager.

Phillippi says that one e-Bike alone won't create a huge difference in UPS’s carbon emissions, but he describes it as “a piece of our overall strategy” as far as environmental impacts and efficiencies.

It also ties into the company’s broader strategy to settle a problem that troubles Portland and other cities around the world: traffic jam. According to UPS, traffic jam costs it hundreds of millions of dollars a year in additional operating costs. The time when the average UPS delivery truck is stuck in traffic is about 16 minutes a day, slowing its deliveries and increasing the company's carbon emissions.

The pilot program is in its early stages and already has hit its first stage: ice storms pulled trees and branches down all over the city, blocking bike lanes and making travel dangerous. How do e-Bikes deal with it?

If the trial proves successful, you may be able to see UPS delivery people wearing bike shorts in other places around the country, “Other cities have expressed some interest,” Phillippi said.

1What is typical of the e-Bikes in Portland?

    A.Making less noise. B.Delivering packages.

C.Carrying a box on the back. D.Producing power by foot.

2What might be the disadvantage of the e-Bikes?

A.It is powered by foot or motor.

B.It's easily stuck in the traffic jam.

C.Obstacles on the lane may hold back the e-Bikes.

D.The amount of energy to be saved hasn’t been quantified.

3What is the main idea of the passage?

    A.A solution to traffic jam.

B.A pilot program in the USA.

C.The e-Bikes springing around the world.

D.The e-Bikes test for deliveries in Portland.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A.To entertain. B.To advertise.

    C.To inform. D.To persuade.

  • 23、Lawn Games for Adults That’ll Make You Feel Like a Kid Again

Experts say that engaging in playful activities through adulthood can help lower stress, improve cognitive functions, and build social bonds with others, which is so much more than what your phone can do for you. So what are you waiting for? Round up the family, grab one of these lawn games for adults, and let the good time sroll.

Start the two-on-two game by bouncing a ball off the net, sending it flying toward your opponents—they have three passes between them to send the ball back over to your team. When they miss, you score, and the first one to get to 21 wins.

    The Pocket Shot $25.00

Who doesn’t love lining up cans and shooting them down with a slingshot? It’s demanding yet thrilling. The Pocket Shot is a super powerful slingshot that shoots at two or three times the rate of a regular slingshot. It’s super tiny, so it fits in your pocket.

    Giant 4-Connect-In-A-Row $79.99

Two players at a time try to insert their red or blue coins into the wooden frame to form a vertical or horizontal line of all the same color. It’s way more challenging than you’d think.

  • 24、Get cold hands, but hate wearing gloves? There might soon be a technology that can help you. The US scientists are developing an arm heater that allows people to go glove free in freezing conditions, helping them to carry out mechanical repairs or first aid.

In cold weather, wearing gloves might be a good choice because they can keep your hands at a comfortable temperature, but they often reduce flexibility. Take off your gloves, though, and numbing cold has an equally damaging effect on your fine motor skills, as well as being extremely uncomfortable.

John Castellani, an American physiologist who specializes in cold weather, and his team are attempting to solve the problem with a pair of electrically heated armbands worn around the forearms.

Dr. Castellani says that much of the problem is due to the body shutting down blood flow to surrounding areas. “Through research, we find keeping the forearms warm can prevent this,” he says.

A previous study showed that heating the torso (躯干) also keeps the hands warm, but that approach requires too much power for a portable device. Castellani’s team has found that warming just the forearm with a battery-powered gadget improves both finger temperature and ability in tasks requiring manual skill, such as putting pegs in a peg board. In a series of tests, the device reduced flexibility loss by 50 percent and finger strength loss by 90 percent compared with wearing no gloves at 0.5 ℃. The electric forearm heater helps by a combination of delivering warmer blood to the fingers and reducing blood vessel constriction (血管收缩). Even if the wearer can’t go glove free, it could allow them to wear thinner gloves.

【1】Why is the electric forearm heater being developed?

A.To deliver warmer blood to the fingers in cold weather.

B.To reduce blood vessel constriction in cold weather.

C.To have the wearer go without gloves in cold weather.

D.To keep hands warm and skillful in cold weather.

【2】What do we know about electrically heated armbands according to the passage?

A.They are difficult to carry around.

B.They have been on sale in the market.

    C.They use less power comparatively.

D.They can heat the body together.

【3】What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.The wearer.

    B.The arm heater

    C.The blood vessel

    D.The warmer blood

【4】What’s the purpose of the passage?

    A.To inform.

    B.To entertain.

    C.To advertise.

    D.To educate.
