  • 24、   French artist Albert Uderzo, who co-created the much-loved comic series Asterix, died of a heart attack in March, 2020 when he was 92.

Uderzo was born in Reims, France, in 1927. After World War II, he began to illustrate comics. In 1952, he met up with René Goscinny. The two worked on several projects—with Goscinny writing and Uderzo drawing—before coming up with Asterix in 1959. Asterix focused on a small, but brave fighter Asterix defending his village from Roman attackers during the time of Julius Caesar over 2, 000 years ago. In the stories, Asterix’s village is the only part of an area called Gaul that the Romans have not yet taken over. Gaul was roughly where modern-day France is. Asterix wasn’t exactly a superhero, but he often used his brain instead of his strength to settle problems with his trusty friend Obelix.

When the comic first appeared in the magazine Pilote in October, 1959, it was a hit right away. Then two years later the first Asterix book came out, and it sold 6, 000 copies. Just four years later, the fifth one sold 300, 000 copies. When the ninth book came out after another two years, 1. 2 million copies were sold in just two days.

The Asterix books have been translated into more than 100 languages. There have also been 15 Asterix board games and 40 Asterix video games. By 2017, 370 million Asterix books had been sold.

Uderzo’s partner, Goscinny, died in 1977. To keep up with the demands of fans, Uderzo took on the writing as well as the drawing. Many of the Asterix books, including his new books, have been turned into movies. Now, the Asterix books are being produced by a new artist team from France.

1What can we say about Asterix?

A.He liked using his head. B.He trusted people easily.

C.He was a comic writer. D.He ran the village Gaul.

2When was the ninth Asterix book published?

    A.In 1961. B.In 1963. C.In 1965. D.In 1967.

3What does the statistics about the Asterix books in paragraph 4 show?

A.Their wide topics. B.Their long history.

C.Their hot popularity. D.Their different characters.

4What did Uderzo do about the Asterix books after Goscinny passed away?

A.He adapted many of them into films. B.He formed a new artist team for them.

C.He asked Asterix fans to make up stories. D.He wrote the Asterix stories instead of Goscinny.
