21、In the heart of Melbourne, Australia, lies a three-story model house, which could be the home of the future. Made totally from organic materials and run on renewable energy, the building, known as “The Greenhouse,” is completely zero waste. It was designedby zero waste advocate Joost Bakker, as part of his Future Food System housing experiment.
“The greenhouse is inspired by nature—it’s an ecosystem where nothing is wasted,” Bakker says. Organic waste is fed into a biodigester where it ferments(发酵) and is turned into gas for cooking or fertilizer for plants; rainwater is collected and used for irrigation and an aquaponics(共生) system.
The design of the house is topsy-turvy, says Bakker, with the roof as the foundation, loaded with 35 tons of soil. That helps hold the building in place, he says, and provides fertile ground for plants—more than 200 plant species grow on the roof terrace(平台), as well as insects, snails, fish and chickens.
Through the Greenhouse project, Bakker wanted to prove that he could feed a family with his self-supporting house design. “I think we’ve proved that it’s actually much more productive than even I had imagined,” he says. “We’ve gathered 35 kilos of potatoes from a square meter.”
He hopes the example will offer a blueprint to future homes and a practicable alternative to the current food system, which is responsible for more than a third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Creating a circular system could also help to really reduce food waste, of which there is 1. 3 billion tons a year, costing the global economy 940 billion.

22、All networks like 3G and 4G will be things of the past, because people already have access to 5G. So, what’s so special about a 5G future? First of all, its download speed can be as fast as 20GB/s, which is 100 to 200 times faster than that of 4G. But what’s more impressive is 5G’s low delay rate. Now, 4G takes an average of 200 milliseconds to send and receive information. But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond.
5G is a great breakthrough (突破). It’s going to change the way equipment connects to the Internet, and more importantly, to each other. And self-driving cars may be one of the biggest breakthroughs to come out of 5G. Human reaction (反应) time is 200 milliseconds, yet we still have accidents every day. The self-driving car under the 5G network could react and communicate its reaction to hundreds of cars around it, all within 1 millisecond. It’ll play a great role in preventing car accidents and completely ending traffic jams.
5G can benefit us in many other ways. Operations could be performed by robots controlled by experts from the other side of the world. Therefore, more lives will be saved in time. Factories can be staffed by robots that can communicate their tasks to each other, and they can do more work over the 5G network. As a result, more labour forces will be freed.
However, 5G is not perfect. 5G uses the millimeter waves, while 4G uses the 15- to 40-centimeter-long waves. And shorter waves go fast but not very far. On the 4G network, the signal (信号) can go 10 kilometers. But the 5G signal can go at most 300 meters, and it can’t even go through walls or rain. So, what does that mean? Having such a short signal distance means we need to build a lot of signal towers in the future.
【1】How does the author introduce 5G in paragraph 1?
A.By giving examples of the uses of 5G.
B.By reviewing 5Gˈs development from 4G.
C.By providing some basic information of 5G.
D.By making comparisons between 4G and 5G.
【2】Why are self-driving cars mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.To show the advantage of 5G.
B.To prove the importance of 5G.
C.To explain the role of self-driving cars.
D.To tell the progress of self-driving cars.
【3】What does the underlined part “be staffed by robots” mean?
A.Be built by robots.
B.Have robots as workers.
C.Offer employees robots.
D.Produce more robots.
【4】What can we know about the 5G signal?
A.It uses longer waves.
B.It needs fewer signal towers.
C.It travels a shorter distance.
D.It wonˈt be affected by weather.
23、 Smaller things are simply better—kittens, puppies, miniature golf, you name it. And it looks like the physicists at Leiden University in the Netherlands agree, as they’ve created another marvelous mini wonder: the world’s smallest boat, thanks to one very impressive 3D printer.
The Dutch researchers say they built the small boat to better study synthetic (合成的) microswimmers, or tiny particles that move around in fluids, such as water. Biological examples of microswimmers include sperm and bacteria. “We want to understand how shape affects the movement and interactions of microswimmers,” Daniela Kraft, an associate professor at Leiden, says “By creating synthetic microswimmers, we can single out the function that shape has.”
The baby boat measures in at just 30 microns, which is about one-third of the thickness of a human hair. In theory, then, the little boat could travel along one of your hairs —and you probably wouldn’t even notice it. It’s so small, in fact, that you can’t even see this thing with the naked eye, Kraft says.
Kraft and her team decided to print a tugboat, rather than, say, a truck or some other random object because the computer-aided drafting file for the ship is a common test used in 3D printing, though usually at a much larger scale (规模).
Known as “3DBenchy,” the boat serves as a sort of standard to help determine the capabilities of a given printer, based on its ability to complete various ‘‘difficult-to-print features,” Kraft says. One example is the inside of the cockpit (座舱), which features some unique objects that are hard to print in general, let alone at this miniature scale.
This work proved the group’s “Nanoscribe Photonic Professional” printer can produce even the tiniest 3D-printed objects. But it’s not the kind of commercial 3D printer you’ll be able to snag off of Amazon. Instead, it uses a laser, focused inside of a drop of water, to write the impossibly small structures, Kraft says.
【1】What’s the researchers’ purpose in making the boat?
A.To create a technical wonder.
B.To deliver extremely small objects.
C.To improve the function of 3D printers.
D.To know the effects of shape on movements.
【2】Why did Craft and her team choose to print a boat?
A.It can be used at a large scale.
B.Its shape can be adjusted conveniently.
C.It is the usual form of test for 3D printing.
D.It resembles the inside structure of a cockpit.
【3】Why does the author mention “Amazon” in the last paragraph?
A.To make a comparison.
B.To provide some evidence.
C.To give detailed explanations.
D.To correct a misunderstanding.
【4】Which of the following helps make the boat possible?
A.Biological theory.
B.The laser technology.
C.A high-power microscope.
D.A commercial 3D printer.
24、 Flowers make people happy. And while that might seem obvious, there hasn’t been much research to prove the point until now.
Some new studies by Rutgers University scientists support the idea strongly, and the experts go on to assume that flowers have flourished on this planet, with their beauty evolving in recent thousands of years, partly because humans are so attached to them.
In a test, bunches of flowers were sent by florists to 113 men and women in a retirement community. All 113 got flowers and a notebook, but some got them earlier and received a second bunch when the others got theirs. By now you can guess the outcome. The more flowers, the more smiles.
The results of the studies got the scientists to thinking about how the flower industry of today has evolved into growing things that serve no other purpose than emotional (情感上的) satisfaction. Nature won’t even pollinate (授粉) many of the domesticated flowers. Just among roses, there are so many types created by humans that, clearly, flowers aren’t what they used to be. But it’s likely our collective hand has played a role longer than you might think.
Geneticist (遗传学家) Terry McGuire suggests that nature’s prettier flowers got to survive and develop well because people didn’t destroy them when they cleared for agriculture. Instead, they grew them and have been doing so for over 5,000 years. “Because they’re a source of pleasure, we take care of them. In that sense they’re like dogs. They are the pets of the plant world.” McGuire says.
Here is one way that might have worked:
Many species of flowers that are now planted used to grow only when the ground was disturbed, McGuire explains. “As humans moved into agricultural settings, these flowers would have been weeds.” “These flowers might have been tolerated because of their beauty. The seeds would have been preserved and replanted. Over time, the best of these flowers might have been selected and the seeds more carefully preserved.”
