21、 From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Many believe that music helps improve creativity, but an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers and published in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology is challenging that notion. Psychologists from Lancaster University, the University of Gavle, and the University of Central Lancashire say that their findings indicate music actually prevents creativity.
To come to their conclusions, researchers had participants complete verbal problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room, and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music obviously weakened the participants’ ability to complete tasks associated with verbal creativity. The research team also tested background music such as those commonly heard in a library, but found that such music had no impact on participants’ creativity.
The tasks were simple word game. For example, participants were given three words, such as dress, dial, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word associated with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. The single word in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunflower, etc.). Participants completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while exposed to three different types of music: music with unfamiliar lyrics (歌词), instrumental music, or music with familiar lyrics.
“We found strong evidence of imperfect performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions,” said co-author Dr. Neil McLatchie. Dr. McLatchie and his colleagues conclude that music even familiar music with well-known lyrics disturbs the participants’ focus, preventing creativity. Also, as for the library background music having seemingly no effect, the study’s authors believe that was the case because library music creates a “steady state” environment that doesn’t affect concentration.

22、I went to the bus station for a long trip yesterday. Feeling very bored, I had nothing to do but wait on the bus as there was still about half an hour to go. But it gave my curious eyes enough time to look around. The bus station is a noisy and restless world, where people from all walks of life come and go. Looking around, I saw people saying goodbye to their families and peddlers (商贩) selling their bottled water. My sight finally rested on a girl who sat by the window on the bus next to mine and buried herself in a book.
The moment I caught sight of her, my heart just skipped a beat. And then, it beat so fast. All that just happened in the blink of an eye. We were about four meters away from each other and only blocked by the windows of our buses, but I could not have a clear view of her face from behind, only a view of her back. I thought that she was young for vigor of youth from her long hair.
She kept reading without a move, so I supposed what she was reading was so appealing that she did not move her sight a little except for turning over the pages. She paid attention neither to the crowd outside nor to the passing of time. It is actually rare to see a young woman concentrating on reading in such a noisy bus station and what she was reading doesn’t matter. It was really a touching picture since in this material world there are still people willing to sit quietly and read. Which one of us would like to find time to read since we have long been distant from books, the carrier of words?
The time finally came with a bell ringing. Maybe I could never see her again, but this beautiful encounter should last in my memory for the rest of my life.

More than 215 pilot whales died after beaching themselves on the Chatham Islands over the weekend. The pilot whales started to become stranded (搁浅的) on the remote islands’ northwest last Friday, according to the Department of Conservation (DoC).
Because of the isolation of the Chatham Islands and an active shark population, it is considered too dangerous to actively refloat stranded whales. Unless they are naturally refloated by the tides, all of them will die.
“We do not actively refloat whales on the Chatham Islands due to the risk of shark attack to both humans and the whales themselves,” DoC said in a statement.
“All the stranded pilot whales are now dead and their bodies will be left to decompose naturally on site.”
A department team was being organized in response to the latest stranding. They will probably be tasked with euthanising (使安乐死) whales that remain stranded.
The Chatham Islands, 840km east of mainland New Zealand, and a resident population of less than 800 people, are “a stranding hotspot, among the top three places for strandings in New Zealand”, according to the conservation department. The islands are the site of the biggest recorded stranding in New Zealand history – an estimated 1,000 pilot whales in 1918.
Pilot whales — which can grow to more than six metres (20 feet) long — are also highly sociable, so they may follow podmates (同伴) who fall into danger.
In New Zealand, about 300 animals beach themselves annually, according to official figures, and it is not unusual for groups of between 20 and 50 pilot whales to run aground.
Why these strandings occurred – and also why they sometimes met with similar strandings in southern Australia – remained a largely unanswered question.

24、There are electric cars, boats, trains and small planes that are a sustainable way to travel. Larger airplanes have not been able to make the transition because the lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries are too heavy and not strong enough to provide the power for the airplanes to take off. Until now.
NASA is working on a new innovative solid-state battery, which can be used by the aviation (航空) industry, according to a news release from the space agency. The batteries, called Solid-state Architecture Batteries for Enhanced Rechargeability and Safety (SABERS) do not suffer from any of the limitations of lithium-ion batteries and can outperform the batteries that are available now.
“SABERS continues to go beyond its goals,” Rocco Viggiano, an investigator for SABERS at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, said in the news release. “We’re starting to approach this new frontier of battery research that could do so much more than lithium-ion batteries can. The possibilities are pretty incredible.”
The solid-state batteries that NASA researchers are working on carry more energy, are considerably lighter, and much safer to use. That’s because solid-state batteries do not contain liquids which can lead to overheating, fires and charge loss. Liquid batteries require each cell to be inside its own steel casing. Solid-state batteries can be massively stored in a single casing and that reduces the weight. The battery can also run at much higher temperatures that require much less cooling. All of this makes NASA’s new battery very promising.
Now that NASA has demonstrated the new battery’s features, the agency is looking at all its potential uses. SABERS is cooperating with researchers from Georgia Tech, Argonne National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, as well as other NASA centers.
“Georgia Tech has a big focus on micromechanics of how the cell changes during operation. That can help us look at the pressure inside the battery, which then helps us improve the battery even more,” Viggiano said in the news release. “It can also lead us to understand from a practical standpoint how to manufacture a cell like this.”
【1】What does the word “outperform” underlined in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Get out of.

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.
Is Alan Sugar a Role Model?
In this paper I would like to discuss the question 4Is Alan Sugar a role model for people going into business?9 There are certainly reasons to answer 'yes’ or ‘no’ to this question.
Alan Sugar has definitely been a successful businessman and celebrity. He left school at 16 with no qualifications and started his own business selling electrical goods out of the back of a van. He now has an estimated fortune of £830 million and is the 84th richest man in the UK. His Amstrad CPC 464 was one of the first home computers and by the end of the 1980s Amstrad had a stock market value of £1.25 billion. In the nineties and later he started buying and selling companies such as Sinclair, Betacom, Viglen and eventually sold Amstrad itself, at a profit. He was also Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. He has now become a TV celebrity with his own TV series The Apprentice', which is a reality TV show where a group of young business people try to win an important position in Alan Sugar’s company.
On the other hand, Alan Sugar has, for a long time, not been very popular with many people. He has a reputation for being a rude and insensitive man. He has treated the contestants on ‘The Apprentice’ badly. In fact Alan Sugar is best known for saying ‘You’re fired!’ to someone in every episode. Many business people have also said that. ‘The Apprentice’ actually shows you how not to run a business, rather than how to run one. Even his business skills have been questioned. Amstrad was very unsuccessful in the nineties and many people blame Sugar personally for that failure.
In conclusion, Alan Sugar is certainly not an ideal role model. However, in my opinion Alan Sugar is a role model because he started with nothing and finished a millionaire. Such a story surely has lessons for all of us.
