21、Many of China’s ancient architectural treasures smashed to dust before Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng began documenting them in the 1930s. The husband and wife team were among the first preservationists to operate in China, and by far the bestknown. Their efforts have since inspired generations of people to speak out for architecture threatened by the rush toward development.
Becoming China’s best architectural historians was no easy accomplishment. The buildings they wanted to save were centuries old located in distant parts of the country. In many cases, they had to journey through dangerous conditions in the Chinese countryside to reach them. Exploring China’s remote areas during the 1930s meant traveling muddy, poorly maintained roads by mule(骡子)or on foot. Inns were often dirty food could be polluted, and there was always risk or violence from rebels, soldiers and robbers.
Their greatest discovery was the Temple of Buddha’s Light, in Wutai County, Shanxi Province. The breathtaking wooden temple was built in 857 A. D., making it the oldest building known in China at the time.
Liang and Lin crawled into the temple’s most forbidding, forgotten areas to determine itsage, including one hideaway inhibited by thousands or bats and millions of bedbugs, covered in dust and littered with dead bats. “In complete darkness andamong the awful smell, hardly breathing, with thick masks covering our nosesand mouths, we measured, drew, and photographed with flashlights for several hours. When at last we came out to take a breath of fresh air, we foundhundreds of bedbugs in our bag. We ourselves had been badly bitten. Yet the importance and unexpectedness of our find made those the happiest hours of myyears hunting for ancient architecture.” Liand wrote of the experience in anaccount included in “Liang and Lin; Partners in Exploring China’s ArchitectualPast.”

According to the UN Intergovernmental Panel (专家咨询组) on Climate Change, global temperatures have risen by approximately 0.6℃ in the past century, caused mainly by emissions of greenhouse gases produced by human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.Temperatures are to increase between 1.6℃ and 5.8℃ in the next century, accompanied by sea level rise and an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events.
The best available evidence suggests that climate changes since the 1970s may already be causing over 150,000 deaths annually, and that greenhouse gas emissions would increase disease burdens in the coming decades. The risks are concentrated in the poorest population, who have contributed least to the problem.
The Kyoto Protocol (京都议定书) is signed by 128 nations, and commits the participating industrialized countries to cutting emissions of greenhouse gases by over 5% below 1990 level by the period of 20082012.
“Over 600 thousand people died in weatherrelated disasters in the 1990s.Temperature and rainfall influence the rates of diseases and infections including malaria, and malnutrition, which together cause over 3.5 million deaths a year. The Kyoto Protocol is the first step towards protecting the climate system, which exerts such a strong influence on our health”,said Dr Kerstin Leitner,Assistant DirectorGeneral for Sustainable Development and Healthy Environments.
While acting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is also essential to protect vulnerable (脆弱的) communities from the effects of climate changes.WHO works to promote measures such as protection from malaria and other climate sensitive diseases, and reliable access to clean water and sanitation, for people in the most vulnerable developing countries.Increasing disease control efforts will also help to protect current and future generations from the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions.

24、I was excited about having a third child, but worried about the first year. A friend of mine who's a filmmaker said, "Why don't you just photograph the whole thing?" So I had one holder for the camera over the changing table and another where I nursed. I wasn't sure that anything would ever come out of it. I had not even looked at the photographs until a couple of months ago. They just seemed so quotidian that I couldn't imagine that they would be interesting at all. Time can turn photographs into metaphor or allow them to become a symbol instead of a documentary picture.
At the particular moment of having a newborn, mothers' needs are on the minds of the country. However, motherload is about what mothers don't show: the emotions and psychological states that we've all been socialized to bury. It's not so much about my personal existence as it is about the blurred(模糊的)existence, all that time spent keeping something alive.
Having a newborn is a very ugly, untidy time of life. I felt out of the picture. I felt very stressed and very needed, but also very invisible. The images get at that unreal quality of not feeling like a whole person. I'm not really in focus, because my brain isn't in focus either.
I can't tell you how many times I've checked an artist's biography to see, Oh God, she's so great, but does she have children? Like, are we in the same race? Because it's like running with weights on. But when I look at the pictures, I feel like a survivor.
【1】The author documented the months following the birth of her third child because_________.
A.she felt the period very terrible
B.she favored her third child most
C.she was encouraged by her friend
D.she fell in love with the filmmaker
【2】What does the underlined word "quotidian" in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Fantastic.
B.Ordinary.
C.Reliable.
D.Familiar.
【3】What does the author think of motherload?
A.Mothers prefer to socialize with others nearby.
B.Mothers attempt to uncover their mental states.
C.Mothers tend to have their own sense of existence ignored.
D.Mothers enjoy the sweet burden of keeping something alive.
【4】Why does the author mention a great artist in the last paragraph?
A.Because she wants to show how weak she is.
B.Because she finds it good to have no children.
C.Because she loves reading the artist's biography.
D.Because she feels it hard to shoulder the motherload.
