  • 22、“Father, do you see Mother in your dreams?” the young girl asks. “You know sometimes I do.”

“Mother comes to see me a lot, you know. We sit and talk.” The father smiles. “How is your homework coming along?”

“Why do I have to study so hard?”

“It is what your mother would have wanted!”

She regrets speaking her mind. “I’m sorry, Father, I shouldn’t have said that.” She looks up and sees his eyes well up with tears.

“It’s okay, love,” he gets up and pours himself a drink. “I’ll just sit outside for a while. You finish up your work, okay?”

“I’m sorry, Father; Mother did love you very much. She told me all the time.”

“Homework, first, eh? Then we can chat about your mother.”

He heads off outside and sits in his usual chair, looking around the courtyard. The whole area relaxes the mind and somehow soothes the soul.

“All finished, Father. May I get a drink and sit with you? I have some questions.”

She comes with two drinks one for him and one for herself. He looks surprised. She never really liked him having a drink. Although he had cut back a lot from before he brought her here, it still seemed strange.

“Mother told me all about you. That is before she passed away. We would laugh together at your love stories.”

He listens without uttering a single sound.

“Why didn’t you come and take her away with you? She really wanted that. Did you know that?”

Her father looks at his daughter lovingly. “Circumstances were difficult back then. It was just the way things were. When it came time to…” He sighs. “To visit her it was too late.”

The girl smiles. “I hope I will have the same kind of love you and mother had.”

“Without all the heartache,” her father adds.

“She always knew you loved her. She told me every day,” the child mentions cheerfully. “I saw her crying sometimes when she read your letters.”

“Did she make you promise to look after me?” She inquires.

“She asked me to take care of you.”

    “You promised her, didn’t you?”

    “Yes, I did.”

“It is nice out here, isn't it? Mother would have been very happy here.”

She talks with some authority. Her father remains silent. A smile comes to his weary brow. He nods his head.

“Mother wanted me to give you something. I think now the time is right.” She runs to her room. Upon returning she hands her father a book. “It’s mother’s diary! She wanted me to give it to you.”

He takes the book and holds it in his trembling hands, “Thank you.”

“Mother said you would understand things better.”

    “Wise woman, your mother.”

He places the book on the table as he gets up. The girl gets up and wraps herself around her father.

“I love you.” she looks up at his face.

He picks her up and hugs her. “I love you, too.” His voice trembles.

“It’s okay, Father. We have each other now and mother is in both of us.”

    He kisses her head.

“Time you went to bed,” her father softly says.

He puts her down and she scampers off to get washed and ready for bed.

Clearing up everything he checks on his daughter. She is in bed waiting for her good night kiss. He tucks her in and bids her goodnight.

Just as he is to leave she tells him. “Mother told me she adopted me when I was a baby.”

He stands at her bedroom door. Words fail him. Yes, he knew she was adopted.

“I am really lucky for being loved by my parents, even if I am not really theirs.”

You trying to bring on the water works?” he tells her.

She giggles, “Goodnight, Father. I love you.”

    “Love you, too.”

His face lights up as he wipes his dampened eyes.

The door closes and the child falls asleep dreaming of her mother.

Sitting outside he picks up the diary and opens it and reads the first line: “I love you, my dearest, if only things could have been different…”

  • 23、Top lists are lecturing people on everything from “100 places to visit” to “100 books to read”. Aren’t you just tired of being told what to do with your time?

Now you have a list to end all lists!

Take a look at the following two examples from the list of “101 things not to do”.

    Swim with Dolphins?

Swimming with dolphins is one of the world’s most profitable tourist activities. However, not every dolphin will welcome having their busy, tiring day interrupted by tourists screaming and pushing around them in the water. Worse yet, when dolphins get too near to the boats loaded with tourists, they could get caught up in ropes and killed by propellers (螺旋桨).

Here’s a little secret. Dolphins look like smiling at you, but actually they’re just opening their mouths.

Go to See the Mona Lisa?

There must be something about the mysterious smile. The 6 million people who visit the lady in the Louvre every year can’t all be wrong, after all. But they can be quite annoying, standing in front of you, holding their cameras to prevent you from seeing anything. In fact, it is hard for you to see the painting clearly because you have to stay away from it for security reasons. After queuing for hours, many tourists can remain in front of the painting only for 15 seconds at most.

If the mysterious lady in the picture knew her fate, she wouldn’t just be smiling. She’d be laughing.

So, still long to see the Mona Lisa? If you want to find out more about the list, read 101 Things NOT to Do Before You Die. Visit www.not2dobeforedie.co.uk and buy the book at a 20% discount.

【1】According to the passage, swimming with dolphins ________.

A.is the world’s most popular tourist activity

B.gives fun to both tourists and dolphins

C.will make tourists busy and tired

    D.can cause danger to dolphins

【2】What does the author think about going to see the Mona Lisa?

A.Fifteen seconds in front of the painting is enough.

B.It is wrong to go and see the mysterious smile.

C.It is not satisfying as expected.

    D.Queuing for hours is worthwhile.

【3】What is the main purpose of the passage?

    A.To advocate a book.

    B.To introduce a website.

    C.To comment on popular lists.

    D.To recommend tourist activities.

  • 24、Feel the Music

We’ve all heard of smart phones, but how about smart clothing? The CuteCircuit company has stepped up the technology beat and invented the SoundShirt, which was designed specifically for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. How does this incredible shirt work?

First, let’s talk about a little science.People who have either all or some hearing loss don’t actually listen to music the way that hearing people do, but they can feel it.Sound is made up of vibrations, called sound waves, which hearing people can hear through their ears with the help of the brain. What’s really cool is that deaf people sense vibrations in the part of the brain that others use for hearing!

So how is this remarkable technology able to function? First, CuteCircuit had to figure out a way to send signals to the body, kind of like how you can feel when your phone vibrates in silent mode. Those connections the body can feel are called haptics, a use of technology that simulates the senses of touch and motion. The SoundShirt has tiny sensors woven into the shirt to pick up sound and transfer signals to the brain and body.

To test this music-to-shirt-to-wearer’s brain connection, CuteCircuit set microphones around the stage of a symphony orchestra. The shirt’s computer system digitally received the sounds coming from the instruments. Then the sensors, working like little motors, changed the signals into vibrations and the shirt wearer’s brain did the rest.

The SoundShirt lets people who are deaf or hard of hearing enjoy music in a unique way.The very deep musical sound, or pitch, of instruments like drums and basses vibrates in the lower part of the shirt.Higher pitched sounds from instruments like the flute or violin vibrate higher, around the neck and arms.As the music plays, the sensations combine while the brain gets to work putting together all the different vibrations, allowing the wearer to “hear” the concert.

You might think this innovation(创新)would look like something out of a science fiction movie, but in fact, these shirts are wireless! And the decorative laser-lined design on the shirt looks like an image of sound waves.

Technology’s purpose is to help people and make life better.Think of all the amazing things designers, engineers, and producers of wearable tech will be able to do for humankind.

    【1】What’s the passage mainly about?

A.Deep musical sounds from drums vibrate in the lower part of the SoundShirt.

B.The SoundShirt lets people who are deaf or hard of hearing enjoy music.

C.Wearable technology like the SoundShirt is the wave of the future.

D.CuteCircut tested the SoundShirt with a symphony orchestra.

【2】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The SoundShirt is made without any wires.

B.Deaf people are unable to sense sound vibrations

C.The shirt wearer’s brain change sound signals into vibrations

D.The sounds from the flute vibrate in the lower part of the SoundShirt

【3】What can be inferred about the SoundShirt described in the passage?

A.The SoundShirt works when the wearer is listening to a symphony orchestra.

B.CuteCircuit is giving away its SoundShirts to those deaf or hard of hearing.

C.The SoundShirt doesn’t work without the power of the human brain.

D.Before the SoundShirt, deaf people had no way of feeling sound.

【4】The author probably wrote this passage to ___________.

A.advise that companies should focus on applying wearable technology

B.advocate that technology can be used to create products that help others

C.prove that the design of wearable technology is a rewarding industry in future

D.exemplify that musical instruments can be used to change technology for the better
