六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、For most of human history, people thought the world was flat (平的). That is, they thought that if you traveled far enough in one direction, you would come to the edge of the world in the end. Then, about two thousand years ago, people started to come up with the idea that the earth was round. This meant that by traveling far enough in a straight line, you would finally come back to where you started.

It wasn’t until the sixteenth century that Ferdinand Magellan’s exploring team became the first to travel around the world. The exploring team first moved west from Portugal, around South America, across the Pacific, before returning around South Africa back to Portugal. Although Magellan died during the journey, one of his captains, Sebastian del Cano, made it all the way.

In 1872, the French science novel writer Jules Verne wrote a book called Around the World in 80 Days. The novel was about a man who traveled around the world, starting from London, to win a game.

In 1889, an American journalist, Nellie Bly, was sent by her newspaper to follow the journey taken by the characters in Verne’s book. She traveled around the world, sending letters back to her newspaper about her journey. She finally arrived back home after her trip, taking 72 days, six hours, eleven minutes, and fourteen seconds to go around the world.

Even though traveling around the world these days is very easy, and can be done in one or two days by plane, people are still interested in breaking records. From 1970 to 1974, an American, Dave Kunst, was the first person to walk all the way around the world. He wore out twenty one pairs of shoes on his trip! The first airplane flight round the world took place in 1924, done by Lt. Lowell H. Smith and five other Americans, and the first solo helicopter (直升机) flight around the world was done by an Australian explorer, Dick Smith, in 1982-1983.

As for a nonstop balloon flight all the way around the world, this wasn’t done until 2002, when Steve Fossett from the US finally succeeded after many tries.

  • 22、These days, more and more students in the UK are taking a “gap year” between their graduation(毕业)from high school and their university(大学)studies. This means that they take a year off, to do something else, before they start their studies.

For most students, spending time in foreign countries is the favourite activity-and Australia is the favourite place to go.

Many parents, teachers and business people agree that travelling can teach important values(价值). Just like the 20-year-old young man William said, “During the gap year, I learnt to solve different problems all by myself and began to realize the importance of getting along with people of different cultures.”

There are many companies around the world that welcome these students on their projects-helping people in poorer countries, or even in your home country. Although(尽管)you don’t get paid for your work, this kind of work can teach important skills-decision making and finding ways to problems, for example-that will help a student in a job one day.

Finally, the knowledge and experience you get will one day be very useful in an area you hope to study or work in.

If several university graduates(毕业生)are making applications for the same job, gap year work experience allows you to say, “I’ve already had some experience of this kind of work.” And that can help you get the job!

【1】More and more students in the UK are taking a “gap year” ________.

A.before they graduate from high school

    B.before they graduate from university

C.before getting a job after graduating from university

D.before going to university after graduating from high school

【2】What is the favourite activity for most students in the UK?

    A.Spending time in Australia.

    B.Spending time in the UK.

    C.Spending time with their teachers.

    D.Spending time with their parents.

【3】What can’t students get in gap year work in the writer’s opinion?

    A.Values.

    B.Skills.

    C.Experience.

    D.Money.

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

    A.Work for the poor

    B.Take a year off

    C.Apply for a job

    D.Travel

  • 23、   Healthy eating doesn’t just mean what you eat, but how you eat. Here is some advice on healthy eating.

Eat with others. It can help you to know others’ healthy eating habits. If you usually eat with your parents, you will find that the food you eat is more delicious. Listen to your body. Ask yourself if you are really hungry. Have a glass of water to see if you are thirsty—sometimes you are just thirsty, you need no food. Stop eating before you feel full.

Eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Since you don’t eat for the past ten hours of sleeping, your body needs food to get energy. You will be smarter after eating breakfast.

Eat healthy snacks like fruits or cheese. We all need snacks sometimes. In fact, it’s a good idea to eat two healthy snacks between your three meals. This doesn’t mean that you can eat a bag of chips instead of a meal.

Don’t eat dinner late. Because of the busy life, we always put off eating dinner until the last minute. Try to eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance to digest most of the food before you rest for the next 8 to 10 hours.

  • 24、   When it comes to shopping for clothes, my mother and I have always disagreed on what fits (适合) me well. To me, if it zips (拉上拉链), it fits. My mom, however, usually says I need a bigger size. When I was a teenager, I wanted to dress like my friends, but my body size made it impossible. When mom told me something didn’t suit me, or I needed a bigger size, all I heard was   that my body was wrong. To avoid arguments, we stopped going shopping together.

This continued until I got engaged (订婚) last year and needed to buy a wedding dress. Maybe I could buy it alone, of course, but my mom is the most important person in my life. The idea of looking for a wedding dress without her seemed just inappropriate (不恰当的). Although the experience of taking her with me sounds pretty scary, I would still like to try it.

And so the day came. As I tried on a simple white dress, I saw tears in my mom’s eyes. “You look beautiful!” she told me. Nothing could have shocked me more. This one didn’t zip up at the back and I did actually need a bigger size, but my mother didn’t say that. She just told me how beautiful I looked. At that moment, all the arguments in the past were erased off (抹去).

We didn’t buy a dress that day. We decided to see more, which I would never have predicted. A few weeks and many shopping trips later, we found the perfect dress. We both loved it as soon as I put it on. And during those few weeks, mom and I also found the perfect fit (搭配) for our shopping relationship.

1According to the first paragraph, we know that _______________.

A.The writer liked clothes with zippers while her mother didn’t

B.The writer and her mom always argued about the size of the her clothes

C.The writer’s mom could always find perfect clothes for her

D.The writer tried to lose weight when she was a teenager

2Why did the writer go shopping with her mom to buy the wedding dress?

A.Because she couldn’t find any friends to go with her.

B.Because her mom was very experienced in choosing a wedding dress.

C.Because it was inappropriate to shop for a wedding dress without her mom.

D.Because they always had a great shopping relationship.

3When they went shopping for the wedding dress, the writer felt shocked because _________.

A.none of the wedding dresses could zip up at her back

B.her mom asked her to try on a bigger—sized dress again

C.her mom said she looked beautiful even though the dress didn’t fit her

D.they found the perfect dress more quickly than she had expected

4Which is the best word to describe the perfect fit for their shopping relationship?

    A.Understanding. B.Exciting. C.Missing. D.Encouraging.

5What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Finding the Perfect Fit. B.The Perfect Zipper. C.Crying Mother. D.Shopping Alone.
