  • 23、I have been very lucky to make many trips to China. Though I have had some trouble with the language, I have never had a problem I couldn’t solve. As a native English speaker (土生土长的说英语的人), I can go almost everywhere in the world and find someone to communicate with. I never thought that someone who speaks only Chinese would have a lot of trouble in my country.

Recently, the Li family that I had met in China moved to Canada. I met them at the airport. My wife and I made meals for them and showed them around where we live. Everything seemed to go smoothly (顺利地) for the first two days as we looked for a car for them, showed them the way to different stores and the nearest city, Victoria. Mr and Mrs Li have a two-year-old son and soon we became Nainai (Grandmother) and Yeye (grandfather). We were having a good time but we didn’t realize Mr Li can’t speak English.

Luckily, Mrs Li can speak very good English. Many people with Chinese backgrounds live near us. In fact, none of them speak Chinese, Mr Li can’t even buy a mobile phone without his wife’s help. He can’t talk to me, of course. By the third day, he felt lonely and worried. And on the fourth day, we decided to take them to a large Chinese community.

Now, we often visit them and they visit us too. Sometimes Mrs Li would still like to live near us but Mr Li cannot. I feel bad because he seems very nice and smart but I can’t talk with him. It seems that neither of us will learn the other’s language because of our ages. Maybe we will never have a friendly conversation. But we will think of each other as friends.

【1】The writer doesn’t have any trouble in travelling around the world possibly because ________.

    A.he’s very lucky

    B.he speaks very good English

    C.he’s good at speaking Chinese

D.he is good at communicating with others

【2】How did the two families feel on the first two days?

    A.Sad.

    B.Happy.

    C.Worried.

    D.Lonely.

【3】Who can’t speak English in the passage?

    A.Mr Li.

    B.Mrs Li.

    C.The writer.

    D.The writer’s wife.

【4】Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A.How the Li family came to Canada.

B.How old Mr and Mrs Li’s son is.

C.Why the Li family moved to Canada.

D.Why the writer feels bad when he is with Mr Li.

【5】What can we infer (推断) from the passage?

A.Mr Li is not clever at all.

B.The writer has never been to China before.

C.Both the writer and Mr Li are quite young.

D.The two families live a little far away from each other now.

  • 24、   Thinking about my time in France, I noticed quite a few differences between the French and the English.

The first example is about the French language. In French, there are two ways to say ‘you’: ‘tu’ is  the informal  (不正规的) form, while ‘vous’ is the formal form. When I learnt French, I was taught to call everyone ‘vous’ unless ( 除 非 ) they were my family or a friend. So I was surprised that everyone in France used the informal ‘tu’ all the time. School children used ‘tu’ with their teachers as well as the head teacher. Even strangers I met in the street would call me ‘tu’, and sometimes ‘tu’ was written on street signs. But I continued to use ‘vous’ because I didn’t want people to think I was being impolite. To be honest, I’m thankful that in English we don’t have to worry about these things!

As you might know, school children in the UK traditionally wear school uniforms but in France pupils do not wear uniforms. It was a culture shock for me to see children wearing Spiderman T-shirts  and baggy blue  jeans while in the classroom. The final difference was the relaxed attitude at school. Teachers were never in a hurry, and  the children and teachers were given long rests and much time to eat their lunch. While  in  the  UK,  school day might seem highly pressured (有压力的).

The UK and France are only separated by a small channel of the sea, but there are many differences between the two cultures! Anyway, I cannot deny (否认) what a great chance it was to live and work in another country.

1Which of the following is NOT a culture shock to the writer?

    A. It takes French students much time to eat lunch.

    B. French students use ‘tu’ with their head teacher.

    C. Students in France wear different clothes at school.

    D. Teachers and students in the UK seem highly pressured.

2What might the writer say to his friends when he goes back to the UK?

    A. It’s very fantastic  to stay in France. B. People in France are more polite than us.

    C. The French culture is  just the same as ours. D. It’s more difficult to learn French in France.

3What is the best title of the passage?

    A. Life in France B. Troubles in France

    C. Cultural Differences D. Different Languages
