21、We’re now used to wearing masks in public during the COVID-19 outbreak. It’s reported that people use about 300 million masks and then throw away every day in China. Where do these used masks go? You might think that they just go in a garbage bin (垃圾桶). But that’s just the first stop on the masks’ journey.
After people throw the masks into bins, garbage trucks empty the bins and take them to landfills (垃圾场). Next, workers will dump (倾倒) the masks into garbage incinerators (焚化炉) and burn them. Burning masks might not seem to be very good for the environment. Won’t it cause pollution?
The answer is “no”, according to People’s Daily. That’s because most masks are made of non-woven fabrics (无纺布). It’s an environmentally-friendly material. It can break down easily. After burning, it turns into water and carbon dioxide (二氧化碳). As long as landfills are properly disinfected (消毒良好的) and deal with their emissions (排放) correctly, burning the masks won’t cause pollution.
In fact, burning the masks can bring some benefits. The process of burning garbage can produce electricity. Burning one ton of garbage can generate more than 400 kilowatt hours (度) of electricity. Some people predict that there will be 162,000 tons of used masks in China this year. Burning all of them can generate 64 million kilowatt hours of electricity. This is enough to allow an electric car to drive 370 million kilometers, which is 9,250 times around the Earth’s equator (赤道).
What’s more, the slag (残渣) from burning masks can be used to make something else.

22、Giving a Hand
Jaime, a new immigrant(移民)of the USA, was going to watch his daughter's first show in a school play. His daughter, Carol, was five years old. She was a student at the local public school. Carol did not have a very big role in the school play. She was just playing a rain cloud in a play about the drought in California. Carol had just one line. Her line was, "I am sad enough to cry about how dry the state is."
Jaime and his wife made sure to arrive early so that they could get a good seat to watch the show. They found seats in the front row. Before the show began, the schoolmaster made an introductory speech. The speech was about how hard the students and teachers worked together to make the play possible. At the end of the speech, the schoolmaster said, "Let's give the school staff a hand".
Jaime, whose English was not very good, stood up when the schoolmaster said this. He knew that when people said "to give someone a hand" they meant they needed help. Jaime always wanted to help, especially at his daughter's school. Jaime thought maybe they needed help backstage.
Jaime's wife put her arm in front of her husband. "Where are you going?" she asked in a low voice. "They need a hand," Jaime replied. His wife explained that "to give someone a hand" could also mean to applaud(鼓掌)someone. When you applaud someone you clap your hands(拍手)after their performance. You are not supposed to stand up and try to help others. "They don't need help. They just want us to clap," Jaime's wife explained. Jaime felt a little embarrassed. He sat back down and began clapping along with the rest of the audience.
Jaime thought to himself that someone needed to give the English language a hand. How could one phrase mean two different things? He meant the English language needed help.
【1】Why did Jaime and his wife arrive at the play early?
A.To talk to other parents. B.To wish their daughter good luck.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?
A.Jaime stood up to applaud. B.Jaime is a warm-hearted man.
C.Jaime was better at English than his wife. D.Jaime's daughter played an important role in the show.

24、What is soil? It is the skin of the Earth. It supports all forms of our life. Nearly all our food comes from the soil. Some of us eat meat, some eat vegetables, but most animals live on plants. If there are no plants, we will have no vegetables, no animals and no meat.
Plants grow in soil with a dark colour. The dark soil is humus (腐殖土壤). Dead leaves, dead plants and animals’ waste make it, but it takes a long time. When the humus has been made, plants can grow well in it.
All soil needs food. Animals’ waste is the best food for the soil, but chemical fertilizers (化肥) are also very useful. The same crops should not be grown in the same place every year. A change of crops and the use of a good fertilizer will keep the land in good condition.
When the soil is dry, the wind blows it away. Sometimes heavy rain carries the humus down to a river. People should grow more and more trees and grass to stop wind from carrying the humus away. It takes hundreds of years to make humus, so we must save every bit of it. Without soil, how can we live?
