21、Albert Einstein and Wolfgang Mozart are possibly the two most famous examples of people who are geniuses (天才). But unlike Mozart, Einstein wasn’t as talented as a kid. Born in Germany in 1879, he was slow to learn to speak, and he was a normal student at school. He was interested in math and science, but he liked to study at home better. Later, he studied to be a teacher, but he didn’t find a job in a school and for some years he was an office worker. A lot of Einstein’s most famous ideas were the result of study in his free time, when he also played the violin to relax.
From 1908, he was a university teacher for many years, first in Europe and then in the US. He was the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. He was famous for his theory of relativity (相对论), but only several scientists could understand it. His biggest dream was to find one explanation for the basic (基础的) ideas in physics, but he died before this was possible.
As a famous scientist, Einstein got letters from people around the world. Some of the letters were from children and he always answered them. One letter was from a girl with math problems at school. “Do not worry about your difficulties in math” was his answer. “I can tell you that mine are still greater.”
Einstein died in a hospital in 1955. He was named “Person of the Century” in 1999 by Time Magazine.

22、The Big Lottery is giving money to groups of teenagers between 14 and 19 who want to become active citizens. The teenagers who would like to help make the area you live in better, cleaner, safer and friendlier can actually get money for improving your local community(社区). We have $80,000 to give away. We are looking for young people to take part in schemes(规划)and projects near where they live.
Here are a few easy things you could do to get started.
Meeting the neighbours: Everybody needs good neighbours. Knock on people’s door and find out what they would like to improve in your area. Set a date for a meeting and then make some plans together. If you don't want to go to their houses, then you could always put a note through their doors.
Neighbourhood Watch: Neighbourhood watch schemes are very popular in the UK. If you go away on holiday and leave your house, it’s very nice to know that a neighbour is keeping an eye on it. It’s a good way to make the area you live in safer. You could set one up easily and quickly.
Lending a hand: There are often elderly people living in the neighbourhood who may not be able to do the things that you can. Offer to do their shopping once a week, look after their garden for them or maybe walk their dog.
No littering: Nobody likes picking up other people's rubbish, but a clean street can make all the difference. Take turns to go out once or twice a week and see what you can find. You never know that one day you might find something valuable.
Recycling: Nearly two-thirds of your rubbish can be recycled. Some areas have already provided places for people to recycle bottles, tins, plastic and paper. Find out if this is done in your neighbourhood. If it’s not, do something about it.
So go on...Just tell us what kind of project you want to join in. Then well send you more details. Take positive action and help make your neighbourhood a better place to live.

23、 An old man was fishing in the bank of a river. A girl came to see him fishing. The old man was really good at fishing and it didn't take long for him to catch a full basket of fish. The old man saw that the girl was very cute, and he wanted to give her a whole basket of fish. But the girl shook her head. The old man was surprised and asked "Why don't you want the fish?"
The girl replied, "I want the fishing rod(竿)in your hands.”
The old man asked, "Why do you want the rod?"
"It doesn't take long to eat all the fish in a basket. But if I have the fishing rod, I can go fishing by myself and I won't be afraid of not having any more fish to eat."
I think you will certainly say that the girl is very smart. Wrong! If she doesn't know how to fish, she can not have fish to eat, even though she has the fishing rod. It's useless to only have a fishing rod. Fishing skills are the most important, not the fishing rod.
Too many people think that if they have a "fishing rod" in their life, they will no longer fear the wind and rain. They are just like the girl, who thought that if she had a fishing rod, she would have fish to eat.
【1】The old man was fishing on the bank of a .
A. river B. lake C. pool D. sea
【2】Why did the girl refuse the fish the old man gave her?
A. Because she didn't like fish. B. Because she wanted the old man's fishing rod.
C. Because the old man had few fish. D. Because she didn't like the old man.
【3】The writer thought the girl was after she explained why she didn't want the fish.
A. smart B. hard-working C. silly D. lazy
【4】What is the best title for the article?
A. The Fish. B. The Fishing Man. C. The Fishing Girl. D. Learn to Fish.
24、I have a rule for travel-never carry a map. I prefer to ask for direction.
Foreign visitors are often puzzled (困惑的) in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the country of the American Midwest, usually there are not many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat. In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure (测量) distance by telling time. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.
People in Mexico never answer “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan think that “I don’t know” is not polite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
One thing will help you everywhere. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction. Go in that direction, and you may find the post office!
【1】What do you think the word “landmarks” means? It means ________.
A.street names
B.building names
C.hotels, markets and bus stops
D.buildings or places which are easily seen
【2】In which place do people tell distance by telling time?
A.Japan.
B.The American Midwest.
C.Los Angeles, California.
D.Mexico.
【3】Which of the following is wrong?
A.Travelers can learn about people’s customs (习俗) by asking questions about directions.
B.People in some places give directions in miles, but people in other places give directions by telling time.
C.A person’s body language can help you understand directions.
D.People in different places always give directions in the same way-they use street names.
