21、 Did you go to Shanghai Disneyland Park last summer? Did you see those famous cartoon characters?Donald Duck was just one of them.
In 1933 an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the film-maker Walt Disney. He had an unusual voice and he wanted to work in Disney's cartoon film for children. When Walter Disney heard Nash's voice, he said, "Stop! That's our duck!”
One year later, the duck appeared in the film. It was the now-famous Donald Duck. The wise little Duck Donald lived in an old houseboat and wore his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eight-minute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audiences liked him because he was lazy and greedy(贪婪的), and because he lost his temper(脾气)very easily. And they loved his voice when he became angry with Mickey's eight nephews. Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasn't a goody-goody(伪善者), like Mickey.
In the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, Donald and his friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto made hundreds of Disney cartoons. He also made educational films about the place of the USA in the world, and safety in the home. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared—there were no more new cartoons.

22、You probably think the music that your parents like is old and dull, and the songs on your playlist are much cooler. But here is what scientists found: people’s music tastes change with their age, according to a study. So it is likely that your own musical preferences will follow a similar path to your parents’.
We used to think that culture and personality are the only factors(因素) that affect one’s music choice. But researchers at the University of Cambridge got data from more than 250, 000 people over the past 10 years. They noticed that as people grow, their music taste changes. There are three musical periods as people grow up “exciting”, “popular” and “sophisticated”.
The first period comes in the teenage years. People prefer exciting music such as punk and rock, because teenagers tend to be active. But as people move into early adulthood, they hope to build close relationships with others. As a result, they become more fond of popular music, such as pop and R&B, which are usually uplifting and danceable. When middle age comes, things have settled down for most people. In this period they will like more “ sophisticated ” music better, such as jazz and classical, as well as more catchy music like country and blues. For many, they feel tired because of work and family, and they need relaxing and emotive music.
But you must be thinking: “Aren’t there old people who are still into rock music? Of course there are. But Jason Rentfrow, a research member explained that their reasons for listening to rock music may have changed. “We like music for different reasons,” he said, and thus at that age people may listen to music that can remind themselves of their youths.

23、I will never forget the tenth summer of childhood with my grandfather in western Norway on the mountain farm where my mother was born. As a boy, I always thought people simply bought whatever they need. Whether Grandfather know this, I didn’t know. One day he said, “Come, I have something for you. ’’
I followed him to a workroom. “You should have a toy boat. You can sail it at Storvassdal,” he said. “Great,” I thought, looking around for the boat. But there was none.
Grandfather pointed to a block of wood. “The boat is there,” he said. Then he handed me some tools and showed me how to use them properly. “It’ll be a fine boat, and you’ll make it with your own hands,” he said, “No one can give you what you do for yourself.” The words rang in my head as I worked. The boat was finished. It wasn’t much to look at, but I was proud. Then I sailed it at Storvassdal.
We had to return to America. “You cannot bring that boat home with you,” my mother said. We had too much baggage. Feeling sad, I hid my boat under a big rock at Storvassdal.
I said good-bye to Grandfather, not knowing I would never see him again.
In 1964, I went to Storvassdal with my parents and my wife and children. To my surprise, for 34 years my treasure stayed here, waiting for my return. I felt we three were together again although my grandfather had died 22 years before.
I carved(雕刻) “1930” and “1964” on its side and put it back.
I returned to the lake in 1968,1971,1977 and 1988. Each time I had the boat and carved the year, my grandfather seemed near.
My last trip to Storvassdal was in 1991. I brought my granddaughters: Catherine, 13; Claire, 12. I hoped they would understand the importance of the little boat and its simple message. At Storvassdal, Claire said softly, “Grandpa, someday I’ll come back.” She added, “And I’ll bring my children.”

24、 One afternoon I visited an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view of the art works. A young couple viewing the paintings ahead of me chatted nonstop between themselves. I watched them a moment and found the wife was doing all the talk. I admired (赞赏) the husband for putting up with her continuous talk. Because of their noise, I moved on.
I met with them many times as I moved through the different rooms of art. Each time I heard her continuous talk, I moved away quickly. I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop when the couple came near to the exit. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white thing. He extended (展开) it into a long stick and then tapped (敲打) his way into the coatroom to get his wife’s jacket.
“He’s a brave man.” The salesman at the counter said, “Most of us would give up if we were blind at such a young age. But he said his life wouldn’t change during his recovery (恢复). So, as before, he and his wife come in when there’s a new art show.” “But how does he enjoy the art?” I asked, “He can’t see.” “Can’t see? You’re wrong. He sees a lot. More than you or I do.” The clerk said, “His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”
I learned something from the couple that day. I saw a young wife describing paintings to a person without sight (视力) and a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life. And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away hand in hand.
