21、 People have told stories about Robin Hood for over 700 years. Nobody knows if he was a real person or an invented character. In the legends, Robin was extremely smart and humorous. He loved laughing and playing tricks on others. Robin had a good heart. In several adventures, he helped strangers, and later his kindness paid off.
The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood appeared in 1883. It was Howard Pyle's first book and it was a great success.
At the beginning of the story, Robin was just a young man, who was good at archery. One day he was walking through Sherwood Forest, a royal hunting forest near Nottingham in England. There he got into trouble with a group of men. Among them, he killed the cousin of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin became a legendary outlaw,__and soon the leader of one hundred outlaws, known as his “Merry Men.”
Robin and his “Merry Men” always looked for rich people and asked them to their camp in Sherwood Forest. When they arrived, Robin gave them a good meal and played music for them. Then he took their gold away to help the poor. Robin became most famous for “robbing from the rich and giving to the poor”.
The Sheriff of Nottingham was Robin's greatest enemy, He was cruel and treated the poor badly. It was his job to keep the woods safe and to make sure that nobody stole the king's deer. He hated Robin because Robin was an outlaw. But most of all, he hated Robin because everyone else loved him. 23、 In the UK, most children have their lunches at school, but in some schools, parents can choose what their children eat. The children can have a school dinner — a hot, cooked meal; or they can take a packed lunch with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.
Often parents know what their children want. Cathy, a mother of three children, told us, “My children have packed lunches because they say they hate school dinners. So I make three packed lunches every morning.”
However, another mother, Susan, made a different choice. She said, “My daughters have always had school dinners. I think they probably get healthier food at school than a few sandwiches I make for them.”
But are school dinners healthy? Katz, a father, thought poorly of them. He said, “Fizzy drinks (汽水) were offered and I think there were lot of chips.”
Jamie Oliver spent a year working in a school kitchen. He was worried about the unhealthy food which included burgers, pizzas and chips. So he tried to cook healthy food such as good stews(炖汤) and curries(咖喱) for the children instead.
So Janie improved the school dinners, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food in that school. Then he advised the government to improve school food across the country. And it seems that the changes have begun.
Anna, a pupil, told us, “we used to have a fast food window where you got chips and coke, but they stopped that this year. There’s salad restaurant, which is good, so it’s healthier than it was.”

24、发霉的食物还能吃吗?
One day, you open the fridge and find some moldy food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn't want to waste food. She cuts off the moldy part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this?
Mold can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or grey. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad—and it's not safe to eat.
If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Soft food, such as bread, tomatoes or hot dogs, usually contains water. This allows mold to easily grow below its surface. Bacteria can also grow along with it.
But it's easy to remove mold from hard food. The mold can't grow very deeply inside this kind of food. According to the BBC, you should cut about 2.5 cm around and below the mold to remove it. It's OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is completely covered with mold, you should still throw it away.
Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, penicillium can be used to make many types of cheeses, such as blue cheese. These cheeses are safe to eat—and they're quite delicious as well.
