24、Welcome to your future life!
You get up in the morning and look into the mirror(镜子). Your face is not likely to change and stays young-looking. In 2035, medical science is better than ever. Many people of your age could live to be 150, so at 40, you’re not old at all. And your parents just had an anti-aging nanotechnology treatment. Now, all three of you look the same age!
You say to your shirt, “Turn red.” It changes from blue to red. In 2035, “smart clothes” contain particles, which are very tiny in size and can be programmed to change your clothes’ color or pattern.
You walk into the kitchen. You get the milk, but a voice says, “You shouldn’t drink that!” Your fridge has read the FRID chip, a piece of electronic equipment, on the milk bottle, and it knows the milk is old. In 2035, every food item in the supermarket has an FRID chip.
It’s time to go to work. In 2035, cars drive themselves. Just tell your “smart car” where to go. On the way, you can call a friend using your jacket sleeves(袖子). Nano-sized “smart technology” is all around you. “Your whole body and everything around you will become part of the same network,” says scientist Ampy Buchholz.
So will all these come true? For new technology to succeed, says scientist Andrew Zolli, “it has to be so much better that it replaces what we have already.” The Internet is one example-what will be the next?

25、
One day, three of my friends came to our house.
They told me they wanted to go to Africa. They asked me if I wanted to go with them. I said, "Yes, I want to go with you."
We started to prepare all the necessary things for the journey. Soon we were ready to go. I said goodbye to my wife and we started our journey. Our plan was to be back in two months.
We left Brazil on the first of September, 1655. Our ship was very big but we were only seventeen men. The ship was full of things for business. We had cups, glass, mirrors, knives and other products.
At the beginning of our journey the weather was very good, but very hot. In one week, a hurricane (飓风) came and it was threatening our ship for the next twelve days. After the hurricane passed, we saw we went quite far from our original (原来的) journey and were instead close to the northern part of Brazil near the Orinoco River. The ship was badly damaged, so we could no longer go to Africa.
The captain wanted us to go back and repair the ship, but I strongly disagreed with him. We went over the maps and decided the best thing to do was to go to Barbados and repair the ship there.
When we started this short trip, a second hurricane came. The next morning one of the sailors cried out, "Land?" and at that moment the ship stopped in shallow (浅的) water. We expected the ship to break apart at any moment because of the strong wind, so we all got into the small boat the ship carried. This was very dangerous because the seventeen of us were crowded in the boat, and it had no sail.
The waves were very big. The wind was extremely strong. The wind pushed us to big rocks. We knew the crash was close.
Suddenly, a huge wave appeared and overturned the boat. I was covered with water and couldn't breathe. I couldn't see tile others or the boat. But I saw a little beach between the rocks.
Another wave carried me to the beach. I tried to get up. I tried to go further froth the sea. I was able to move ten metres up. I was safe. But my arms and legs were very weak. I fell down and I was lying on the beach.

27、There are robots all around us. Some do difficult jobs like flying airplanes and driving subway trains. Some just do one simple job, like washing clothes. They do these by “feedback” (反馈).
We human beings receive feedback through our eyes, ears and other senses (感官), which tell us what is going on around. Robots are kind of like human beings in two ways: they work and they have feedback. Information about what is happening is “fed back” into the robot to tell it what to do next.
There are robots taking care of the temperature of our houses, cookers, and hot water systems. We set the controls to the temperature we want and leave the rest to the robot. Its feedback usually comes from a thermostat (温控器). One kind of thermostat is a metal strip (金属条板), which bends (弯曲) when it gets hot. At the right temperature, it bends just enough to turn off the heat. As the air around it cools, the strip becomes straight, which turns the heat on again.
Some robots are created to work in factories. They are taught to do different jobs. First, their “brains” are shown how the job needs to be done. A person moves the “arms” and “hands” of the robot through each part of the job as the robot’s brain records each move. After that, the robot is set to work on its own. If something gets in the way, the robot will stop until a human engineer comes to solve the problem. When it is needed for a new job, its memory is deleted. Then it will be taught how to do the new work.
The most clever robots can move and see. Their eyes are cameras. Their fingers can feel shapes and even find out how hot and cold objects are. These robots have computer brains, connected to their eyes and fingers, which control their actions.
There are robots all around, making our lives easier. In some ways, they are better than human beings. They work quickly, hardly making any mistakes. They do the same jobs over and over again, never getting bored or tired.
