24、“There’s nothing to discuss,” barked my husband when told him that Rosie, our 17-year-old daughter, had asked whether she could go to Kavos, Greece, for a holiday with her friends. “Of course she can’t. She’s too young to travel without the presence of an adult. It’s completely out of the question.”
So how come found myself standing, two weeks later, at Gatwick Airport. Tearfully, I watched our eldest child disappear through the security checkpoint. In four hours’ time, she would be in Kavos. It’s 2, 500 kilometers away from England!
There comes a time when you have to let your baby go—for many parents, it’s around the age of 17. We know that there is likely to be something wilder than hanging around by the pool and building sandcastles, but the time has come to trust that they’ll look after themselves.
But still felt worried. Rosie tried to put my mind at rest. She said she and her friends would always look after one another and that it really, really was all going to be okay.
After we had waved our last goodbye at the airport, I looked back. She was, to my surprise, looking back at me, too. Teenagers want to cut free, but it’s a frightening business for them, too.
We made Rosie promise to text as soon as she had arrived in Kavos and at least once a day after that. Around 9 a. m. on the first morning, her first message came through. It was twelve hours since I had left her at Gatwick. And all I got was: “I’m here.”
I wish there were safer places than these so-called teen destinations. But like all the dangers that life can hold for them, at some stage, all you can do is warn them, warn them again, warn them once more, and then hope that some of your messages have gotten through.
My daughter got home safely. So did her friends. But Rosie is now talking about a similar journey next year. And my alarm bells have already started ringing.

25、 Pollution
Hundreds of years ago, life was much harder than it is today. People didn't have modern machines. There was no modern medicine, either.
Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution. It's bad for all living things in the world.
Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt over a city. This kind of quilt is called haze(雾霾).
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away. And they mustn't blow dirty smoke into the air.
We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and not throw them on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.
Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight pollution.

26、You don’t have to be a scientist to solve big environmental problems. One Dutch designer is looking for creative ways to make a change-and he’s inviting bikers to join him.
Daan Roosgaarde is a designer from the Netherlands. He uses creative ideas to improve city life. For his Smog (烟雾) Free Project, he designed a special tower that cleans air in Chinese parks. In the Netherlands, he designed a shining bicycle path.
Now Daan and his team are working with engineers at Chinese bike-sharing company ofo to create a new product for public use. It’s an air-cleaning machine connected to a bicycle and is part of the Smog Free Project. In smoggy weather, the machine would breathe in the air in front of the bike and blow out a stream of clean air toward the biker’s face.
It’s no secret that air pollution is a big problem for China. In winter, it’s common for thick clouds of haze (霾), caused largely by factory production, burning of coal and car emissions (排放物), to cover areas of China.
In 2016. only one-fourth of Chinese cities met the country’s air quality standards, according to a survey of 338 cities nationwide from the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
“Of course one tower and a few bikes won’t solve China’s air pollution problem,” Daan said, “but smog-free bikes are an exciting idea that will hopefully inspire communities to create greener cities.”
