四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Pat Brown went to her bank to ask for an ATM (自动取款机) card. It looks like a credit card. A few weeks later, the bank posted her a card and a four—number personal identification number (PIN). Her PIN is 1234.

As Pat was getting ready for bed one night, she remembered that she had only $2 in her bag. The next day she had to give $10 for a lunch for a co—worker. She didn’t want to get up early to go to the bank. So she had to go to the bank that night. She used her ATM card to take out $50 from her checking account (账户).

These are the steps she followed to withdraw (提取) money. First, she put her card in the lower slot (狭孔) on the right side of the machine. She made sure her card was facing the right way. Second, the computer screen said, “Please enter your PIN.” Pat pressed the number 1, 2, 3 and 4. Next, the screen said, “Please select type of transaction (交易) you want by pressing other keys.” Pat pressed the button key for taking out money.

Then the screen said, “From which account?” The choices it gave were Checking, Savings, and Money market. Pat pressed the key for Checking. Next, the screen said, “Please select amount (数量) of transaction (办理).” Pat pushed the number 5 and then 0 three times, and the screen read, “50.00.” The screen then read, “Please wait.” In less than a minute, it read,“Please lift the lid and take your money.”

Pat lifted the lid marked withdraw (提取). She counted her $50 to make sure the ATM hadn’t made a mistake. Then she waited for her withdrawal slip to come out of the slot at the upper right corner of the machine. Pat checked the slip to make sure it was correct. Then her ATM card was returned through the card slot. She put it in her bag and walked away. If Pat had made a mistake at any point by pressing the wrong button, she could have pressed Cancel (取消, 删去) and started over again.

    1What was Pat’s first step?

    A.Pressing the withdrawal button.

    B.Inserting (插入) her ATM card.

    C.Counting her money.

2What did Pat do at once after choosing the account?

A.Selected whether to withdraw, deposit (存款), or transfer (转帐, 过户) money.

B.Lifted the lid and removed her money.

C.Selected the amount of money she wanted to withdraw.

3When did Pat enter her PIN?

    A.Right after inserting her card.

    B.Right before selecting the account.

C.Right before selecting the amount of money.

4When did Pat select the type of transaction?

A.Right  before  receiving  her  withdrawal  slip.

    B.Right after recording her PIN.

C.Right after selecting which account she wanted.

5What did Pat do when the screen said “Please lift the lid and take your money.”?

Do you run away when you hear a bee buzzing? Many people do. A bee sting hurts and some people are allergic 过敏症的to bee venom. But did you know that bees are very important to humans? Honeybees do more than just make honey. They fly around and pollinate flowers, plants, and trees. Our fruits, nuts, and vegetables rely on these pollinators. One third of America’s food supply is pollinated by the honeybee. Honeybees pollinate plants that give us fruit and vegetables.

Have you seen or heard a honeybee lately? Bees are mysteriously (神秘地) disappearing in many parts of the world. Most people don't know about this problem. It is called "colony collapse disorder" (CCD). Some North American beekeepers lost 80% of their hives from 2006-2008. Bees in Italy and Australia are disappearing too.

The disappearance of the honeybee is a serious problem. Can you imagine never eating another blueberry? What about almonds and cherries? Without honeybees food prices will skyrocket. The poorest people always suffer the worst when there is a lack of food.

This problem affects other foods besides fresh produce. Imagine losing your favorite ice cream! Haagen Daaz is a famous ice cream company. Many of their flavors rely on the hard working honeybee. In 2008, Haagen Daaz began raising money for CCD. They also funded a garden at the University of California called The Haven. This garden helps raise awareness about the disappearing honeybee and teaches visitors how to plant for pollinators.

Donating money to research is the most important thing humans can do to save the honeybee. Scientists need money to investigate the causes of Colony Collapse Disorder. Some scientists blame CCD on climate change. Others think pesticides are killing the bees. Commercial (盈利性的) bee migration may also cause CCD. Beekeepers transport their hives from place to place in order to pollinate plants year round.

Not everyone has money to donate regularly. There are other ways to help the honeybee. Spread the word by telling your friends and family about the problem. Tell your teacher about the disappearing bees too. Maybe your class can write a letter to the government.

If you watch the sky for about an hour after the sun goes down, you may see some “moving stars”. But they’re not real stars. They’re man-made satellites(人造卫星). And the biggest of all is the International Space Station (ISS). From May to July is the best season to watch the ISS flying over the earth. And people can see it with their eyes.

The ISS is the biggest satellite and scientists want to live on it. They think that the best way to learn more about space is to live there.

When the space station is finished, it will be like a city in space. People will stay and study there with many of the things they have at home. Laboratories, living rooms and power stations are being built. The ISS is the most expensive space program. Billions of dollars are being spent on it every year.

Scientists hope that the ISS will be a stepping stone for future space exploration(探测). “The ISS will help us understand the human body better, explore space and study the earth. It can help us make life on the earth better,” said Kathryn Clark, an ISS scientist.

Sixteen countries are part of the program: the US, Russia, Canada, Japan, Brazil and 11 European countries. China isn’t an ISS country, but it has helped with some of the experiments. In 2003, China sent some rice up to the ISS to find out what space would do to it.

The first time I went abroad was when I went to London. It was in the summer holidays about five or six years ago and I went with three friends. The plane and train were quite expensive, so we decided to travel by coach. We left at five o’clock in the morning and the journey to London took about sixteen hours but we didn’t mind: we were all very excited because for all four of us it was our first time away from home.

We stayed in London for three days, in a youth hotel not far from the centre. While we were there, we walked a lot. First, we went to see all the famous sites—Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace, then we went shopping in Oxford Street. On the last morning my friends stayed in bed late, but I got up early and went to Camden Market. You can buy all kinds of jewelry and clothes there, and I bought a silver ring for my sister. It was really hot in the afternoon, so we went to Hyde Park for a game of football. Unfortunately, I think the ring fell out of my pocket during the game, because I couldn’t find it when I got on the coach that evening!

I’ve been back to London several times since then, but I don’t think I’ll ever feel as excited as I did that first time.

【1】The writer went to London for the first time ________ .

    A. By plane.   B. By car.

    B. Because his friends stayed in bed late.

    D. Because he wanted to buy his sister a ring.

3When did the wrier think he lost the silver ring he bought for his sister?

    A. When they went shopping in Oxford Street.

    B. When they played football in Hyde Park.

    C. When he got on the coach that evening.

    D. When he got back to London.

4 Why does the writer think he will never feel as excited as he did that first time? ________ .

    A. Because he went there for the first time.

    B. Because he went there with his friends.
