四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、When tea was first brought to England between 1652 and 1654, it was so expensive that only the rich could buy it. It was said that an old couple had some sent to them as a great treat. But they did not know how it should be used. Finally they boiled(煮沸) the leaves, put some of them on a piece of bacon(咸肉) for dinner, ate the leaves, and threw the tea soup away. However, tea quickly proved popular enough to replace ale(麦芽酒)as the national drink of England after King Charles II and his Portuguese wife began to follow this foreign tea tradition.

Before the introduction of tea into Britain, the English had two main meals—breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was ale, bread and beef. Dinner was a long, big meal at the end of the day. It was no wonder that Anna, the Duchess of Bedford (1788—1861) experienced a ‘sinking feeling’  in the late afternoon. So she invited friends to join her for an extra afternoon meal at five o’clock in her castle. The menu centered around small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, and, of course, tea. This summer practice proved so popular that the Duchess continued it when she returned to London, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for “tea and a walking the fields”.

The practice of inviting friends to come for tea in the afternoon was quickly picked up by other social hostesses. A common form of service soon came into practice. The first pot of tea was made in the kitchen and carried to the lady of the house who waited with her invited guests, surrounded by fine china from China. The first pot was warmed by the hostess from a second bottle (usually silver) that was kept heated over a small fire. Food and tea was then passed among the guests, the main purpose of the visiting being conversation.

1The story of the old couple in Paragraph 1 is to show ____________.

    A. how impolite the old couple were

    B. how English people cooked tea

    C. how difficult it was to introduce tea to England

    D. how little English people knew about tea in those days

2The underlined phrase “sinking feeling” in Paragraph 2 means a feeling of _________.

    A. hunger   B. loneliness   C. thirst   D. anger

3Which statement is right according to the passage?

    A. Tea was first introduced to England in the 16th century.

    B. Ale was the national drink of England after King Charles II.

    C. The habit of drinking tea in Britain came from the upper class.

    D. Anna, the Duchess of Bedford first served afternoon tea in London.

4We can know from the passage that afternoon tea ____________.

    A. helps raise the price of tea and china in England

    B. leads to the wide planting and large production of tea in England

    C. is not only an extra afternoon meal but helps bring people together

    D. helps bring King Charles II and his wife together in their childhood

  • 26、As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and especially chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.

One lady had no mailbox, so Dad took the mail into her house every day because she was nearly blind. Once inside, he read her mail and helped her pay her bills.

Mailboxes were sometimes used for other things. One note left in a mailbox read, "Nat, take these eggs to Marian. She’s baking a cake and doesn’t have any eggs. "A young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so Dad paid for the stamps. One businessman used to leave large amounts of cash in his mailbox for Dad to take to the bank.

Later, father died. As I drove home, I noticed two green and red mailboxes made by father were still on each side of Main Street. Each box had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes.

When I saw Frank Townsend, Dad's postmaster and great friend for many years. He asked, " What are we going to do about the letters this Christmas?"

    “The letters?”

    “I guess you never knew.”

    "Knew what?”

Remember, when you were a kid and you used to put your letters to Santa in those green and red boxes on Main Street? It was your dad who answered all those letters every year.”

I just sat there with tears in my eyes. It wasn’t hard for me to imagine Dad sitting at the old table in our basement reading those letters and answering each one. I have since spoken with several of the people who received Christmas letters during their childhood, and they told me how amazed they were that Santa had known so much about their homes and families.

For me, just knowing that story about my father was the gift of a lifetime.

1It can be inferred (推断) from the passage that the writer regarded his travels with Dad as________.

    A. great chances to help other people B. happy occasions to play with animals

    C. exciting experiences with a lot of fun D. good opportunities to enjoy chocolate cookies 9)

2The writer provides the detail about the businessman to show that

    A. Dad had a strong sense of duty B. Dad was an honest and dependable man

    C. Dad had a strong sense of respect D. Dad was a kind and generous man

3What surprised the children most when they received letters in reply from Santa Claus every year?

    A. Santa Claus lived alone in the cold North Pole.

    B. Santa Claus answered all their letters every year.

    C. Santa Claus had unique(独一无二的) mailboxes for the children

    D. Santa Claus had so much information about their families

  • 27、   Are you preparing a big test? If so, you may want to go play some basketball in between hitting the book. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels, including those in the brain stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to think better. As she says, “while we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.”

The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In  this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.

Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors who have a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not be simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as yoga or tai-chi, helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.

1According to the passage, what is the connection between exercise and brain development?

A.Exercise helps make our blood vessels. B.Physical exercise helps us think better. C.The brain needs special mental exercise.   D.The more exercise, the bigger brain.

2The underlined word “trace” most probably means   .

A.to find the result of something B.to seek the details of something

C.to follow the example of something D.to find the origin of something

3Why is yoga suggested for seniors?

A.It does good to the bones of old people. B.It does not increase the heart rate. C.It includes learning new actions.   D.It can be done in groups.

4What is main idea of this passage?

A.How exercise makes people strong. B.How to get good scores on a test. C.How exercise helps the brain.   D.How the brain can change.

五、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 28、任务型阅读

    阅读下列短文,根据短文信息完成文后表格,每空一词。

Making a public speech is the thing that most people don’t want to do. The reason is that we are all afraid of making mistakes in front of others. The more important the speech isthe more frightened we will be. But forget it now. Public speaking is easy. It’s just a simple talkingAlthough I’m a shy manI’ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years. Anybody who can talk can speak in public. Here are some of the lessons I have learned

Keep your speech simple. Your audience can’t take all of your main ideasand they can only remember one or two of themnot ten or twenty. So you should prepare one or two of your main ideas very well. But if you can’t express what you want to saythen your speech will not be paid attention to. And if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to sayyour audience won’teither.

Organize your speech well. No matter how long or short your speech isyou have to organize your speech—how you are going to open or beginwhat main points you want to make and how you’re going to close or end. A strong close is usually very important and critical(关键的)the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. If notthey will be confused.

Keep your speech not long. The standard length of a speech is usually 12 minutes. Most people can’t put their minds in one thing for too long timewhich will make them tired and lose their interest. If you pay no attention to your audience’s reaction(反应)the audience will get bored. Of courseyour speech will fail.

Following these suggestions aboveyou can make a good speech in publicand you will be an excellent speakerI think.
