  • 25、Have you ever been swimming in a pond, stream, or lake and had a leech(水蛭) stick on you? You probably shouted and tried to force it away as fast as you could. But leeches aren’t really sick, and sometimes they can save lives.

In ancient Egypt and later medieval(中世纪) Europe, doctors put leeches on patients. They believed that the spineless wormlike living things can cure all kinds of illnesses by sucking(吮吸) a patient’s blood. In Europe and in the United States, millions of leeches were used throughout the 1800s. Doctors used leeches to treat a number of illnesses, from obesity to headaches. People soon learned that leeches could not cure most diseases and were not a good treatment for patients. However in 1985, a Harvard University doctor changed people’s thinking once again. He was trying to reattach(重新接上) a patient’s ear, which had been cut off. He had trouble reconnecting the veins because the patient’s blood kept clotting(凝). He used a leech to draw out the blood and saved the ear.

Since then, leeches have often been used in surgery where body parts are reattached. During surgery, a leech is placed on the area where the surgeon does not want the blood to pool and clot. Then the leech produces a thing that keeps the veins(静脉) open and stops the blood from clotting. The leech sucks up excess blood, allowing fresh blood to flow, which helps the patient get well.

Some people are scared to death at the thought of having a blood sucking thing attached to them. But why not welcome a leech if it can save your life?

【1】What is the passage mostly about?

    B.In ancient Egypt.

    C.In 1985 by a Harvard University doctor.

D.In the 1800s in Europe and in the United States.

【3】When a leech is placed on a patient, which one happens first?

    A.The leech produces a thing.

    B.The patient’s veins open.

    C.The patient’s blood flow faster

D.The leech sucks up excess blood.

【4】Why did a doctor in 1985 decide to try using leeches?

B.He wanted to change people’s thought.

It's a common belief that over time pet owners start to look like their animals. Now comes the terrifying news that cats look up to their owners as role models and copy their behaviour.

Next time you reach for your fridge think twice. If your cat is watching she will probably overeat as well.

In a new study from the University of Messina it turns out that indoor cats who live closely to their owners “mirror” the lives of their caregivers. They sleep at the same time eat at the same time and can even become more or less social depending on the behaviour of their owners.

“Cats are clever animals with a long memory Jane Brunt director of the Catalyst Council told Discovery News. “They watch and learn from us noting the patterns of our actions knowing where their food is kept and what time to expect to be fed how to open the cupboard door that's been improperly closed and where their feeding and toileting areas are.” Because cats copy our habits if you spend a lot of time raiding(搜刮)the fridge your cat will return to its food bowl for that midnight snack too. According to the study this explains why “human and cat overweight rates often seem to match”.

There's no word if drinking green tea and making sure you go to yoga will benefit (使受益) your cat but based on the study it sounds like sticking to a healthy eating and sleeping habit is best for both of you.

There's a lot we can learn from our cats in return. “When they sit softly breathing eyes half closed the sense of peace and calm that comes over us is like a private less on in inner meditation(冥想),”Brunt said. They're probably pretty good at remaining calm.

So according to science though we think that cats are not close to us all these years it turns out they are in fact learning from us and looking up to us. Scary huh?

【1】 What does the word “terrifying” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A. 可怕的   B. 高兴的 C. 伤心的 D. 无聊的

【2】According to the passage which of the following is WRONG?

    A. Cats can copy humans' behaviours.

    B. Cats are smart and have a long memory.

    C. Green tea and yoga can benefit cats.

    D. Humans can learn from cats in some way.

【3】 What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A. Humans' keeping searching the fridge.

    B. Humans' drinking green tea and going to yoga

    C. Cats' copying humans' habit of looking for food.

    D. Cats' going to their owners for food.

【4】What can we learn from our cats?

    A. To remain peaceful. B. To be able to copy.

    C. To stay hungry. D. To look up to friends.

【5】 The best title for the passage could be “________”.

    A. Your cat can bring you pleasure B. You are copying your cat

    C. You can make your cat social       D. Your cat is copying your habit

  • 27、As kids, we learn how to write, maybe play a musical instrument and draw. So why don’t we learn to code(编码) computer programs too? What coding has in common with writing, playing music and creating art is that it lets you bring your ideas to life. Coding is all about creativity and that’s why I love it.

    Creating with code

CoderDojo helps young people around the world to learn computer programming for free. When I went to my first CoderDojo class in Dublin City University in Ireland, at age nine, I didn’t know anything about coding or even what it was. But I remember making my very first web page that first day, and being surprised that I could create such a thing. It was a great feeling that I think every young person should experience!

By going to CoderDojo every week, I learned how to make websites, apps and games. One of my apps is called Auto-Journalist. It can help journalists(记者) and interviewees do interviews even if they are both really busy or live in different time zones. It is still in development, and I have showed it at an event called Coolest Projects Awards, where young people get to show the public what they have created with code. It’s so much fun to share one’s creations, and to see what everyone else has made too.

    Learning environment

For the past three years I have also been helping to teach other young people at CoderDojo DCU. In recent years I have also noticed many more girls attending CoderDojo DCU to try out coding. This has a lot to do with the CoderDojo girls’ classes—girls and young women take part in it with their friends, and it doesn’t feel like coding is a “boy thing”. It is really wonderful to see this, because we need more girls and women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). It’s a good way to learn more about technology.

    Start early

One of the main things I have learned in the last few years is that coding is not only for adults, coding is for young people, too. And when you are a child it is a great time to start coding, because your imagination is the limit for what you can create!

Want to learn more? Find out if there is a CoderDojo near you at www.coderdojo.com or set one up yourself! Also check out Code.org which has lots of fun drag-and-drop coding games.

【1】 In the writer’s first coding class, she ▁▁.

    A. made apps and games     B. created a web page

    C. wrote for newspapers   D. did some interviews

【2】 Why do more girls begin to learn coding?

    A. There are coding classes for girls.

    B. Girls want to learn a “boy thing”.

    C. There are more girls in STEM.

    D. Girls can meet cool boys there.

【3】What does the writer think of coding?

    A. It is better than playing music.

    B. It limits children’s imagination.

    C. It stops people from learning fast.

D.It helps children with their creativity.

【4】What is probably the best title for this passage?

    A. Start Coding as Early as Possible

    B. Come for Fun in CoderDojo Class

    C. Kids Should Have Chances to Learn to Code

    D. STEM Is Calling for More Girls and Women
