“Excuse me! Could you tell me what is the most important day in our lives? Is it the day we were born or the day we die? Is it the day we fall in love or the day we are successful?” the young man asked.

“None. The most important day in our lives is today,” the wise man replied calmly.

“Why?” the young man was surprised. “Is it because there is some unusual event taking place today?”

    “No, nothing has happened today.”

“So it is because of my visit?”

“Even if nobody visited me today, today is still very important, because today is the only wealth we have.”

“No matter how important yesterday is, it has gone by; no matter how wonderful tomorrow may be, it hasn’t come; no matter how ordinary and boring today is, it’s in our hands.”

The young man still wanted to ask something, but the wise man stopped him and said, “When talking about the importance of today, we have wasted a lot of it. That is to say, part of “today” has passed.”

My dad was in the radio business when I was growing up. He always got tickets to a lot of different sporting events, and in 1984 we went to Madison Square Garden during Michael Jordan’s rookie season (新秀赛季). My dad took me to see Jordan put on a show.

I remember looking at my dad as an eight-year-old kid and saying, “I want to be Michael Jordan one day.” Dad laughed a bit and then turned to me and said, “Son, I love you, but you’re probably not going to be Michael Jordan.” Then my dad pointed to the man standing next to Jordan at the time, his agent David Falk. My dad explained how Falk worked closely with players, and since then, that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.

Years passed and I became a sports agent. My Job is simply to help professional players find jobs. No two days are the same, which I find exciting. If it’s in-season, I’m talking to players about how they are feeling and how they’re performing from week to week. During the off-season, I try to make sure players’ lives are managed, so they can focus on (专注于) improving on the field.

Not everyone can be a sports star, but it’s more possible to work on the business side of sports. I always tell the students I meet to go out of their way to introduce themselves to people. Relationships are so important in this business, and they can take you a long way.

1The writer went to Madison Square Garden ________.

A.to see Jordan put on a show B.to say hello to Jordan

C.to watch an exciting game D.to learn from Jordan

    3David Falk was ________.

    A.Michael Jordan’s agent B.Michael Jordan’s teammate

    C.The writer’s agent D.The writer’s teammate

4Why does the writer think his job is exciting?

    A.Because he likes Michael Jordan.

B.Because no two days are the same.

C.Because he can help players in many ways.

D.Because he wants to be a basketball player.

5What does the writer think is important in his business?

    A.Knowledge. B.Working experience

    C.Relationships. D.Abilities of communication.

  • 26、   Mark Twain once said, “everyone talks about the weather, but no one ever does anything about it.” This was true in his days. But it may not be the case in today’s world. In fact, humans have found many different ways to control the weather.

Cloud seeding (云催化) is a kind of technology that can control rain. It is done by spreading chemicals like dry ice or silver iodide (碘化银) inside of clouds, either by rocket or airplane. This changes the amount of water inside the clouds, which helps to control the amount of rain, the time when it rains and even where it rains.

This technology has helped to solve drought. It has also played a key role during important events. For example, China used cloud seeding in Beijing just before the 2008 Olympic Games in order to stop rain from falling during the event.

However, scientists are still debating how to use this technology. On one hand, it is believed that it might have side effects. For example, silver iodide may be bad for the environment. On the other hand, no two clouds are the same, so every new experiment introduces new conditions.

Using lasers ( ) to change the weather has been tested in a lab, and it has been fairly successful on a small scale. Scientists are still trying to figure out how to use it in the real world, and it could be a new way to stop climate change.

In addition to controlling rain, scientists have also tried to find ways to weaken storms and hurricanes (飓风). Scientists at the US National Hurricane Centre Headquarters think it might be possible to control hurricanes by using lasers. Others believe that burning petroleum ( 石油) in a hurricane’s path could slow the storms down.

  • 27、When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems too.

One big disadvantage is money---it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of travelling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.

Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising---and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.

Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens(十几岁) or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem better. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

【1】What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?21*cnjy*com

    A. Staying on the farm

    B. Moving to the countryside

    C. Leaving home for the city

    D. Running away from the school

【2】Which of the following is true about the writer?

    A. He is very old now.

    B. He is in good health.

    C. He prefers driving a car.

    D. He lives in the city now.

【3】In the passage, the writer tries to _______.

    A. express his opinions about way of life

    B. describe his life in the countryside

    C. show an interest in the outside world

    D. ask the reader to live in the city

【4】How is the passage mainly developed?

    A. By inferring B. By comparing

    C. By listing examples   D. By giving explanations2
