SCHOOL LIFE Wuhan Daily April 15, 2021 Luck or Fight
It can be hard for a soccer team to score a goal in the last minutes of a game. But a team from Changsha Yali Foreign Languages Middle School (FLMS) did it, first reported by Xiangjiang Post. On April 11, the final match of the 2020 China Junior High School Soccer Championship took place in Shandong. The team started off well and managed to score. But later in the game, they were locked in a tie. They also lost their goalkeeper after he got a red card. Facing such a difficult situation, team captain Peng Haozhe stayed calm. In the last five minutes of the game, he got a free kick and their striker (前锋) broke through the opposing team and scored a buzzer-beater (压哨球) goal. They won the game 3-2. "We stick to every detail (细节) that is pointed out by our coach. It's a great test of speed and sports spirit," Peng said. |

25、 Every year, there are many people going home by long-distance buses during the Spring Festival and the Tomb-sweeping Day . There are more walkers on their way home or to work on the roads. So there are more and more traffic accidents on the roads. Thanks to the efforts of the traffic police, it is said that this year the number of traffic accidents across China was 25.2 percent fewer than the year of 2018 during the three-day Tomb-sweeping Day.
Tomb-sweeping Day, also known as Qingming Festival. It is an important occasion for Chinese to honor their ancestors(祖先). Most people go home in memory of(纪念)their ancestors on that day. About 9.78 million Chinese visited cemeteries to honor their ancestors or relatives during the holiday. A few people also spent the three-day holiday on leisure trains. 26、Gulangyu, a beautiful island, was successfully listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 8th, 2017. It’s not only the pride of my hometown, but the pride of the whole nation.
Gulangyu is separated from Xiamen by the 600-metre-wide Egret River (鹭江), with an area of 1.91 square kilometers. It’s like a garden on the water. You can go there only by ship. Cars, buses and bikes are not allowed to run on the island. It is so quiet that wherever you go, you can hear the sound of playing the piano. As a result of this, it is called “the island of music”.
The first name of the island was Yuan Zhou Zi. In the Ming dynasty, it was changed to Gulangyu, meaning “drum waves”. Because the holes in the southwestern reefs hit by the waves make sounds like the drum beating.
Today, Gulangyu is listed as one of the nation’s major travelling places. The main places of interest here include the Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Park, Piano Museum and Memorial Hall to Zheng Chenggong which are visited by millions of people from all parts of the country and the world. What’s more, the buildings and food are popular with visitors.
Therefore, I hope our government can protect the fairyland well, especially the environment.

28、Liyuan Library
Liyuan Library (篱苑书屋), known as one of China's most beautiful bookstores, is located in a small hillside village near Beijing.
The project, designed by architect Li Xiaodong, was built with 40,000 wooden sticks. In the village, Li found large amounts of wooden sticks piled around each house. The villagers gather these sticks all year round to fuel their cooking stoves (炉子). Thus they decided to use this o【1】 material in a special way.
“This project is about the relationship of a building to the surroundings and i【2】 role (角色) in serving the community (社区), rather than a building as an individual object,” Li told the visitors.
In the two-and-a –half years of the operation, Liyuan Library has experienced unexpected levels of use and appreciation. A new bus s【3】 has opened close by for the frequent visits by thousands of people, including local villagers, tourists from the Beijing urban area, and many international visitors as well.
“Everybody is f【4】 to visit,” explained Li. “However, visitors are encouraged to bring two books to the library, and take one back home from the collection in order to keep the place a center of k【5】 exchange.”
Instead of adding a new building in the village, they chose this site in the nearby mountains, a pleasant five-minute walk from the village center. In doing so, they could p【6】 a place for clear thoughts when one takes the effort to head for the reading room.
Li described his practice in the following way: “We try to m【7】 technology, community, local materials, modern thinking and a traditional sense of identity together.”
29、
In China, children like to make promises by hooking pinkies with each other. They say, “A pinkie promise must be ___ for 100 years.” Then they may press their thumbs together to complete the promise. Sometimes, __ will hook pinkies and promise to be together forever.
There are many theories(推测) on the origin of the pinkie promise. Some say it comes from a nursery rhyme. __ say it was introduced from the West – born out of a love story where a man and a woman hooked fingers.
One theory is that it may have ___ to do with the role of fingers in Chinese culture. The Chinese character for “finger” also means “aim(旨)” (referring to people’s thoughts). So hooking fingers can be seen as the exchanging of ___.
Therefore, the fingers play a(n) ____ role in making an oath(盟约): They can not only be used to complete a promise, but also be cut for making a blood oath. When someone swears to heaven, he uses his ____ to point to the sky.
____, hooking fingers means making a serious promise. In some movies, a person who breaks a promise may have his little finger cut ____! Of course, this kind of thing is not very likely to happen in real life. But we can still see____important “pinkie promises” can be. So next time, when you hook pinkies with someone, you’d better be careful with your promise!
