24、A hunter once lost his way deep inside the forest chasing a deer. As hard as he tried, he could not find a way out of the forest, nor could he find any food to eat. He started feeling so hungry that he could eat an elephant in one go. Disappointed, he lost all his hope. And that was exactly when an apple tree caught his sight. He collected some apples to feed him for the rest of his search. As he ate the first apple, he felt thankful for finding the tree. He thanked the jungle. He could not believe his luck when he ate the first apple, but he was less thankful while eating the second apple and even less thankful after eating the fifth apple. Somehow, with each passing apple, his hunger refused to go away and he became less happy. He couldn’t enjoy his tenth apple at all.
Why? He had already taken for granted the gift of having found an apple tree in the middle of a forest. When he took the tenth apple in his hand, he was still very hungry, but he just did not feel like eating any more.
The tenth apple did not lack flavor (味道), nor was it unable to end the man’s hunger. The only thing lacking was his thanks for finding food in the middle of the forest. So, always be thankful for what you have and you can be more happy.

Fire accidents often happen in our daily life. So, as middle school students, it is very important for us to learn what to do when a fire breaks out. Here are some tips, and please keep in mind.
Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells us to leave the house at once.
Make escape plans. We should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.
Prepare fire extinguishers (灭火器) in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them. Practice for a fire. We should do fire practice because they teach us about fire safety. Everyone should know the following fire rules:
Don't open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door.
Stay close to the floor! Smoke can be more dangerous than fire.
The best air is near the floor because smoke rises.
What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop! Don't run! The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.
There are many possible causes for fires. A wise family is ready all the time. If there is a fire, don't forget to call 119 for help.

26、Eat like a king in the morning, a prince at noon, and a farmer at night. This saying is all about the importance of breakfast. And now scientists can tell us just why it’s so important. According to a study carried out at Imperial College London, UK, skipping the first meal of the day not only means you eat more at lunch, but also that your brain wants to find more unhealthy foods.
The study suggests that there is a special part of our brain called the orbitofrontal cortex (眶额皮层), which plays an important part in making choices about what we eat. It is used for identifying the taste of food, especially when skipping breakfast. It is more likely to target high-calorie foods when you’re on an empty stomach.
Scientists did an experiment on this. Dr Tony Goldstone from Imperial College London, scanned (扫描) the brains of 21 men and women, around the age of 25. On the first day, these people skipped breakfast before the scans. On the second day, they had cereal (谷物), bread and jam as breakfast. After the scan on both days, they had their lunch.
When the volunteers had skipped breakfast, they ate around 20 percent more at lunch, compared with days when they had eaten breakfast. Their brain scans also showed the orbitofrontal cortex was especially responsive to high-calorie foods. “We believe that it identifies the value of foods – how pleasant, how delicious something is,” Goldstone told The Guardian.
