  • 25、On the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, some villagers cut down trees in a special way. If a tree is too large to be cut down with an ax, they try something else-yelling(叫喊)at it.  Woodsmen with special powers climb up a tree at dawn and yell at it at the top of their voices. They continue doing this for 30 days. After 30 days, the tree dies and falls over. It seems like the yelling kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works.

It's too bad they don' t have the advantages of modern technology and a scientific mind.

No matter how true the story actually is, it reminds me of something.  I often yell at my wife, the telephone and workers. And sometimes I even yell at the T V, the newspaper and my children. I've been known to shake my fist(拳头)and yell at the sky at times. People like me can often be seen around us.

The man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a ladder for most of an afternoon. We modem, educated people yell at traffic, bills, banks and machines. Machines and relatives get yelled at the most.

It doesn't do much good. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking it doesn't usually help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.

1How do the Solomon villagers cut down a very large tree?

    A. By using a special ax.   B. By using the power of nature.

    C. By using a mysterious power.   D. By yelling at the tree for a month.

2From Paragraph 3 , we learn that the writer seems to be .

    A. a kind man   B. a nice father

    C. a busy husband   D. an impatient boss

3What does the writer think about yelling in life?

    A. It's good for everything.   B. It solves traffic problems.

    C. It makes machines work.   D. It does no good to people.

4Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Yelling can solve all problems.

    B. Yelling at others will never hurt their spirit.

    C. It ' s common for people to yell at things around them.

    D. Solomon Islanders never use an ax to cut down trees.

5What does the story want to tell us?

    A. Yelling hurts both sides.   B. Everyone likes yelling.

    C. Solomon Islanders are very stupid.   D. Every living thing has its own spirit.

  • 26、   No Car Day was first started by 34 cities in France on September 22, 1998. It was started to protect the environment. By now, more than 1,000 cities around the world have had a No Car Day.

The first No Car Day in China was in Chengdu in 2001. Other cities, including Taipai, Shanghai and Wuhan, also support the day.

In Beijing, more and more people are taking part in the activity. It asks drivers to leave their cars at home for one day each month and walk or ride a bike to work. It also calls on Beijing drivers not to use cars on June 5(World Environment Day). The slogan for the day is, "If we drive for one less day, we can have one more nice day."

So far, more than 200,000 drivers have shown their support. "We can't control the weather, but we can choose not to drive," said Wu Zonghua, a car club chairman. Beijing is trying to have 238 blue sky days this year. In the first quarter of 2007, Beijing only had 52 blue sky days. This was 11 days less than the number for the same period the year last year. Much of the dust comes from the desert, but cars cause most of the air pollution. We must do more for No Car Day.

A.to work hard to get fewer blue sky days

B.not to work on World Environment Day

C.to ride a bike or walk instead of driving to work once a month

D.to leave their cars at home for a week each month

A.It was started in France in September, 1998.

B.It was first started in China in 2001.

C.It is supported by over 1, 000 cities around the world.

D.It was first started by a car club chairman in Beijing.

3What can we infer from the passage?

A.More and more people in Beijing are joining car clubs.

B.People will have one more World Environment Day each month.

C.More and more people won't drive on No Car Day in Beijing.

D.The car club chairman Wu Zhonghua won't drive any more.

  • 27、Why Music Isn’t for Everyone?

They say music is universal, and it seems to be true since wherever we go, we see people listening, playing or dancing to it. We tend to think that music is larger than our cultural differences and shows the deeper connections between us.

But according to a recent study published in the journal Current Biology, music doesn’t speak to everyone. There is a condition, the researchers argue, called “musical anhedonia (音乐快感丧失)”. They say that those who have this condition lack the ability to experience pleasure from music.

For the study, 30 people listened to the same, mostly classical music pieces. They were then asked to complete a questionnaire on how they felt about the music. At the same time, the researchers measured their heart rate and skin reaction, which are considered physiological (生理的) measures of emotion.

According to the researchers, most of the people in the study got pleasure from the music. They had a quicker heartbeat and sweated (出汗) more. However, a small number had very little and even no pleasant feeling while they listened. These people had none or very few of the physical signs the others in the study experienced.

The researchers say that this means people have different abilities to enjoy music and that “there are people who specifically can’t enjoy music at all”, study author Josep Marco-Pallares of the University of Barcelona in Spain told Live Science.

To study the condition further, another group of scientists, at Columbia University, US, researched brain activities. They found that the key is the blood flow (血流量) to the reward system in the brain.

“People who got less pleasure from music had comparatively lower blood flow to areas involved in the reward system of the brain when listening to music,” reported the Daily Mail.

The lower blood flow makes it more likely that the brain’s “reward system” will be inactive. Thus, it will release(释放) less of the “pleasure chemical” dopamine (多巴胺). As a result, people get less pleasure from music.

If the research is correct, according to National Public Radio, there are simply people who just don’t get music. They may get pleasure from many things, but a good tune (曲调) isn’t one of them.

【1】What do we know about people with “musical anhedonia”?

A.They usually avoid listening to music.

B.They like to listen to certain types of music.

C.They believe cultural differences are larger than music.

D.They can’t feel the pleasure that music brings to others.

【2】What was the purpose of the study?

A.To learn what music people love most.

B.To learn how music influences people’s emotions.

C.To see whether music works in the same way for all people.

D.To understand the relationship between music and the body.

【3】What happened to the participants when they listened to music?

A.All of them had faster heartbeat and sweated more.

B.People who enjoyed music had more dopamine released.

C.They showed different physical signs as the music changed.

D.People who got less pleasure from music had higher blood flow.
